When you get to the small island<\/a> of Burano in Venice<\/a>, it seems that you are in a fantastic fairy tale movie. The fact is that all the houses here are painted in different colors, saturated and bright. But not only colorful buildings are amazing – people go to admire the exhibits of the lace museum, to look at the leaning tower of San Martino. Just wander through the picturesque streets with souvenir shops or dine in one of the best fish rest<\/a>aurants. Everything here is interest<\/a>ing and original.<\/p>\n

\"Burano<\/a><\/p>\n

Until the 11th century, the island<\/a> was part of the ancient Roman Empire<\/a>. People lived and worked peacefully here – men were mainly engaged in fishing, women – in housework and raising children<\/a>. But the raids of the barbarian tribes forced the inhabitants to leave their homes. They began to look for more calm and protected from enemies places<\/a> and settled in the most remote corners of the Venetian lagoon. One of these places was an island located<\/a> seven kilometers from Venice.<\/p>\n

Why it was called Burano is not exactly established. It is assumed that representatives of a noble family with such a surname once lived here. Until 1923, the island had the status of a city<\/a>, then it became one of the quarters of Venice, the area<\/a> of \u200b\u200bu200bu200bthe territory is a little more than 21 hectares. Now about 3,000 people permanently live on it. It is located on islands separated by narrow channels that have access to the Venetian Lagoon.<\/p>\n

Since the 17th century, the city<\/a> has specialized in the production of lace. Weaving technology, according to one version, was imported from the Eastern Mediterranean, from the island of Cyprus<\/a>, which in those days was a colony of the Roman Empire. First, ready-made lace products were brought from there, then the inhabitants of the island themselves learned how to<\/a> weave. But here they believe that lace was invented by the women of Burano.<\/p>\n

In the warm sea<\/a>son, they helped their husbands weave nets for fishing. In winter, in an effort to decorate their homes and clothes, they began to weave lace, which soon became known throughout Europe<\/a>. The peculiarity of Buran weaving is that it is made using a unique<\/a> technology – not with the help of bobbins, as, for example, Vologda weaving, it is embroidered with needles.<\/p>\n

\"Burano<\/a><\/p>\n

One of the main attractions<\/a> is dedicated to this craft – the Museum of Lace “Museo dei Marletto” (“marletti” – this is how lace is called in Italy<\/a>). It is located on Piazza Baldassare Galuppi in the building of a former school of lacemakers. The school closed in 1979, because young girls do not want to do painstaking and tedious work, the ancient craft is a thing of the past.The museum has an interesting<\/a> program, first they show a video<\/a> about the history<\/a> of the creation of Venetian lace, about its production, then visitors can see<\/a> an interesting collection of the best products.<\/p>\n

On the island you can buy things made by local craftswomen, but their prices<\/a> are very high. If it is not possible to purchase original lace, a fake made in China is bought at quite affordable prices<\/a>. There is a romantic version of the appearance of lace craft. One fisherman was engaged to a girl whom he loved very much. One day he went fishing. In the sea<\/a>, a siren tried to seduce a handsome guy with bewitching singing, but the young man did not succumb to the charms of the seductress. For steadfastness and fidelity, the siren gave him an amazing lace woven from sea foam. The Lace Museum is located in Piazza Baldassare Galuppi. Opening hours<\/a> from 10.00 to 18.00, ticket price 5.5 euros for adults, and 4 euros for children<\/a> from 6 to 14 years old, free for children under 6 years old.<\/p>\n

\"Burano<\/a><\/p>\n

On the main square of the island there is another attraction that the locals are proud of – this is the leaning tower of San Martino. The tower began to be built in the XY century with donations from the townspeople. Inside<\/a>, the walls are decorated with frescoes by the artist Tiepolo. Due to the collapse of the ground, the bell tower began to deviate from the vertical.<\/p>\n

Now its slope is 1.8 m, it seems that it is about to fall. The tower is saved from final destruction by the wall of another building on which it rests. When the bell tower began to tilt, the city administration decided to restore it and correct the situation, but the residents asked to leave everything as it was. Now it is a symbol of the quarter, the most beautiful view of it opens from the canal bridge<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

It only takes a few hours to explore the islands. And wherever the tour<\/a>ist goes, all roads will lead to the main square of Baldassare Galuppi (Piazza Baldaccar<\/a>re Galuppi). The square is named after the famous native of this place – Galuppi. Now few people know his name, but in the 18th century he would have been a famous master of the Italian comic opera, conductor and organist. He was respectfully nicknamed “buranello”.<\/p>\n

Grateful residents erected a monument to the composer on the square named after him. Italy<\/a> is famous for<\/a> its cuisine – everyone knows risotto, lasagna and pizza, as well as fish dishes. It is believed that the best fish restaurant in Venice<\/a> is located on the island of Burano. It's called “Al Gatto Nero Da Ruggero” Excellent cuisine, but you need to know<\/a> that the cost of one dish is from 16 to 30 euros. True, the portions are very large – one can get enough for two people.<\/p>\n

What is the tradition of painting houses in different colors?<\/h2>\n

When they began to paint houses with multi-colored paint, historians cannot say, only funny legends<\/a> speak about this. One of them, not very believable, is very popular with tourists<\/a>. The island is surrounded by the sea<\/a>, naturally many of the inhabitants were sailors. Getting to their hometown after long voyages, the sailors went to taverns and other drinking establishments, where they heartily celebrated their safe arrival. In order for a sailor drunk to an insensible state to be brought home, the wives made a mark on their forehead that matched the color of the house. So the sailor was brought home.<\/p>\n

Another version is that each clan or clan was obliged to paint their houses in the same color. If noble persons have a family coat of arms, then here is the color of the dwelling. What appeared as the root cause of the appearance of multi-colored buildings is not known for certain, but the tradition is maintained to this day. Now they do it to attract many tour<\/a>ists.<\/p>\n

When visiting Venice, they, as a rule, come to Burano for several hours to look at the riot of colors. Now, according to the law, no one has the right without special permission to repaint the house in a different color (even shutters, roof and doors) at their own discretion, only in agreement with the city administration.<\/p>\n

Where is it located and how to get there<\/a><\/h2>\n

The island can only be reached by sea on a water bus<\/a> – vaparetto from the Fondamenta Nuove pier, located in the center<\/a> of Venice. Route<\/a> No 12 goes to the island, travel<\/a> time is 45 – 50 minutes. Ticket price for 1 hour – 7 euros. You should be aware that trams depart<\/a> from several houses in Venice. In order not to confuse the landing<\/a> place and not to go to another island, you need to look at the scoreboard, which shows the route<\/a> number and the final stop.<\/p>\n

You can buy a ticket<\/a> on the shore and on board<\/a> from the conductor, their cost is the same. If tickets are bought on the beach, they must be brought to the magnetic device, otherwise they will be invalid. And the fines for unpaid travel<\/a> in Italy<\/a> are impressive. A trip to the island of Burano, as well as to other nearby islands of Venice, does not leave people indifferent – beautiful houses with traditionally hung linen, obligatory flowers on the windowsills, a wonderful view of the Venetian lagoon – all this is remembered for a lifetime.<\/p>\n
