Millions of tourists visit the Uffizi Gallery every year. A large collection of paintings concentrated on the territory of the gallery is systematized and presented to visitors in chronological order. This principle of arrangement allows you to trace the development of painting by masters of various directions and enjoy a huge collection of paintings by the Flemish and Florentine schools of the 13th – 17th centuries.

Story

The history of the gallery begins from the moment when the Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I Medici decided to place all government structures in one room. The halls of the Uffizi Palace were supposed to cover 13 scattered state chancelleries of Florence. The construction of the building was started by the court architect Giorgio Vasari in 1560 and completed in 1581 by his successor Bernardo Buontalenti.

After the death of Cosimo I, his son Francesco I de' Medici, the first of the ducal family, decided to place family treasures on the upper floors of the Uffizi Palace – paintings, miniatures and antique sculptures. From this moment begins the formation of a unique art collection, the development of which was continued by Ferdinando I de' Medici until his death in 1609.

At the end of the 17th century, the wife of Ferdinando II, Victoria della Rovere, Duchess of Urbino, transported and placed in the Uffizi Gallery an exceptional collection of paintings by great Italian artists, which was called the “Urbino heritage”.

The last representative of the Medici family, Anna Maria Ludovica, in 1737 handed over the collection to the new Dukes of Tuscany – the Austrian Loren family, who not only preserved, but also increased the wealth of the gallery. Today, art exhibits are located on the third floor of the palace, in 4 corridors and 45 halls of the gallery, ordered and divided into sections.

Architecture

The majestic building of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence is built of gray natural stone and skillfully lined with white Florentine plaster. The building has three floors, an elongated “U” shape and a terracotta tiled roof. On the northern side, the gallery adjoins the Piazza della Signoria, on the east it borders on the Palazzo Vecchio, and through the southern narrow passage it has access to the embankment of the Arno River. The building acquired its final form in 1658.

On the outside of the gallery, in deep niches between the columns, it was supposed to place ancient statues, copies of Greek sculptures from the forum of Emperor Augustus, but only in the 19th century these voids were filled. Now they have 28 marble figures of Tuscan educators, architects and artists.

Above the main entrance to the Uffizi building there is a bust of the founder of the gallery, Francesco I, and the coat of arms of the Medici family. The interior layout of the gallery has a strict architecture of an administrative building. When working on the project, the construction of a gallery over the Arno River caused a particular difficulty for Giorgio Vasari. This section was supposed to connect the Pitti Palace and the Palazzo Vecchio.

Such a plan arose from Cosimo I to ensure the secret wedding procession of the heir to the Florentine throne, Duke Francesco, and the youngest daughter of Emperor Ferdinand I, Joanna of Austria. In less than half a year, in 1565, an air corridor was built over the Ponte Vecchio bridge, from the wide windows of which there was a beautiful view of Florence, the Arno River and the Ponte Santa Trinita bridge.

During the construction of the kilometer-long Vasari Corridor, part of the ancient church of San Pier Sceragio and many city buildings were destroyed. The basilica that remained from the temple now serves as a gallery hall of the same name, which presents wall paintings by Andrea del Castagna and the famous fresco by Sandro Botticelli “The Annunciation” of 1481. On the example of the paintings of the great masters, one can see how the creation of realistic portraits with characteristic features and expressive faces replaces the divine image. The brightest representatives of the Gothic style of writing are the canvases of Giotto di Bondone.

The artist, neglecting the rules of the Romanesque style, depicts the faces of saints on the canvases in profile, moves the figures, creating an airy composition, and shows human experiences. Vibrant Gothic images are also represented by paintings by the amazing Italian painter Lorenzo Monaco.

The Baroque style was intended to glorify the church and royal nobility, depicting lush interiors and decorations, but at the same time it expressed the unbridled elements of nature, the diversity of the world and man, as an inseparable part of the universe. The contrasts of light and shadow, the interweaving of reality and fantasy, all this can be seen in the works of such great masters as Sandro Botticelli, Michelangello Buonarotti and Raphael.

From Giotto to Caravaggio

The painting by Giotto di Bondone, presented in the Uffizi Gallery, determined the beginning of the Early Renaissance period, displayed in religious images a new life content, sincerity and faith in man. With a personal guide, you will find out who this artist was and why he abandoned the medieval traditions in painting? How did he manage to convey three-dimensional forms on canvases with the help of light and shadow?

The art of this era aimed to combine the divine principle, creative forces, reason and human capabilities. Masters such as Masaccio, Masolino and Paolo Uccello in the first half of the 15th century began to resort to the scientifically based use of linear perspective in painting. Artists of this period depict figures of famous people on their canvases among divine scenes, paint portraits and even self-portraits.

The founder of the realistic trend in painting is the painter from Milan, Michelangelo Merisi de Caravaggio, who refused to depict mythological characters and religious figures on canvases. Thoroughly studying nature, Caravaggio chooses ordinary scenes from life as plots and reproduces images of real people.
