The sights<\/a> of Seoul and ordinary city<\/a> buildings form a fantastic architectural mosaic. The secret to the miracle of harmony is simple: car<\/a>eful planning. It became a key rule of Korean urban planning over 600 years ago. Time has confirmed the relevance of this approach. The metropolis impresses with its scope, well-groomedness, the ability of its inhabitants to protect nature and preserve the spirit of antiquity. However, at the head of these qualities is precisely the accuracy that the Koreans conside<\/a>r to be among the main virtues.<\/p>\n

cheonggyecheon stream<\/h2>\n

An 11-kilometer recreational area with this name is located in the very heart of the city<\/a>. The first attempt to ennoble the territory was made 600 years ago, when bridges were built across the stream and work began to clean up its bed. In the middle of the 20th century, after the Korean War, slums appeared near the source. In the 70s, the stream was “hidden” under the highway, and 30 years later, the city authorities decided to demolish it and rest<\/a>ore the recreation area<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The park opened in 2005. Fountains<\/a>, bridge<\/a>s were built on its territory, crossings over the water stream on stones were equipped, benches were installed. Local craftsmen have transformed the gray concrete walls along the creek, decorating them with paintings and pottery. At night, the park is illuminated by lights, turning it into a fabulous space. Previously, 13% of cases of suicide occurred here, since 2013 the numbers have decreased, but the problem remains. To do this, mirrors, signs with funny inscriptions, photo<\/a>graphs of Korean cuisine, and sculptures were placed along the parapet. Surprisingly, they really stop desperate townspeople from taking a fatal step.<\/p>\n

Bukhansan National Park<\/a><\/h2>\n

The area of \u200b\u200bthe smallest and most visited national park in the world: 80 square kilometers. It occupies part of the city and the neighboring province. The art object consists of thematic galleries dedicated to history<\/a>, world art, romance, luxury, traditions<\/a>, mirrors, and everyday life.<\/p>\n

The latter can be an extremely entertaining spectacle if, with the help of special effects, familiar information is presented in a new light. Famous parts of the art object are the museums of love and ice. Access to the Love Museum is prohibited to minors. The Ice Museum, which houses magnificent ice sculptures, is open to visitors of all ages. The Trick Eye Museum has several branches outside of Seoul.<\/p>\n

Ropeway “Namsan”<\/h2>\n

Namsan is a classic example of how a funicular can be turned into one of the city's top attractions<\/a>. It carries about 50 thousand passengers every month. The cable car route<\/a> covers the peaks of Mount Namsan and the Seoul TV Tower. The funicular began to operate in the 60s of the last century. Since that time, the structure has been reconstructed several times, which made it possible to make the “route<\/a> by air” as comfortable and safe as possible.<\/p>\n

Each cable car cabin can accommodate up to 48 passengers. Transparent walls allow you to freely admire the beauty of the city, nature in the dark and daylight hours. It is highly likely that in the coming years the cable car will disappear from the map of Seoul. The city authorities are considering projects to replace the funicular with special elevators, where the role of cabins will be performed by gondolas of a smaller capacity.<\/p>\n

Seoul TV Tower<\/h2>\n

The building has several names, which is quite symbolic, because it performs various functions. YTN Seoul Tower, N Tower, and Namsan Tower are all one building, and are 236 meters high. The tower was repeatedly renamed, but today it remains a symbol of the city.<\/p>\n

The upper part consists of 4 floors, where there are shops, observation decks, rest<\/a>aurants. Namsan Village Museum of Traditional Korean Hanok Dwelling<\/h2>\n

Namsangol Hanok Village Open Air Museum is located in the city center<\/a>. It is surrounded on all sides by skyscrapers. The museum consists of 5 houses, pavilions, gazebos, and performance venues. The complex has a traditional Korean garden, a pond, a stream. The museum occupies an area of \u200b\u200babout a hectare. For Seoulites, this site was enough to create an authentic rural atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The only caveat: the construction of the houses presented here could afford officials, wealthy aristocrats, members of the imperial family. However, household items placed in the premises belonged to representatives of different social strata. The museum began to receive visitors in 1998, it took 10 years to create it. The village is free to enter and is open from April to October<\/a>. At this time, master classes in folk crafts, solemn events (including weddings) are held here.<\/p>\n

There is a 10-storey shopping<\/a> center and a luxury hotel here. The total height of the structure: 555 meters. There is a swimming pool on its 85th floor, and an observation deck at an altitude of 500 meters, whose floor is made of heavy-duty glass.<\/p>\n

Each element of the square, whose length is 557 meters, carries a huge semantic load. The number of plants in the flower garden corresponds to the number of days that have passed since Seoul became the capital of Korea. The numbers of the fountains are reminiscent of victories over the Japanese fleet. Dates of the most important events in the history<\/a> of the city are engraved on the stones immersed in water. Stones without inscriptions have a special place – they are waiting for their turn.<\/p>\n

Olympic Park<\/h2>\n

The largest park in the city is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts. The sports recreational area covers an area of \u200b\u200bmore than a million square meters. The park was opened in the 80s of the last century on the eve of the Olympic Games. Indoor sports palaces and stadiums operate on its territory, a 17-storey Olympic center, a swimming pool, a velodrome and other facilities are located. The famous Olympic Museum is also located here.<\/p>\n

The symbol of the park is the Gate of Peace on Earth. The masterpiece of modern architecture, 24 meters high, is made of concrete, decorated with mosaics depicting dragons. The walls of the ancient Moncheon Tho Son Fortress preserved in the park, the pearl of the complex, remind of the times when the city existed under the threat of invasion by invaders from the north.<\/p>\n

Residents believe that Changdeokgung was built on a magic<\/a>al place, because auspicious energy descends from the top of the mountain. The palace has belonged to the ruling Korean Jeongseon Dynasty for centuries. By the will of fate, it was here that it was interrupted when the last emperor of Korea Sunjong died, deprived of the opportunity to rule the country.<\/p>\n

Seodaemun Prison<\/h2>\n

The building was erected at the beginning of the 20th century, when the power in the state actually belonged to the Japanese. The building was built in a year, it changed its name several times and until the 80s served exclusively as a prison. The building has become a famous landmark because political criminals served their sentences in it. Among them: Lee Myung-bak, who was elected president of South Korea, then stepped down from power and then… ended up in another prison for bribery and corruption.<\/p>\n

Currently Seodaemun is a museum. The building has been preserved since its construction without significant changes. Historians managed to completely recreate the atmosphere that reigned in the watchtower, the torture room, and the cells for prisoners. The halls of the museum contain documents from the time of the Japanese occupation, personal belongings of the fighters for the independence of Korea, photo<\/a>graphs, paintings dedicated to the history of the state.<\/p>\n

Museum of Art “Lium”<\/h2>\n

It was created and operates thanks to the support of the world famous Korean company Samsung. In guidebooks, it is often called the gallery of Korean contemporary art, which is not entirely true. The art object includes two separate exhibition pavilions and a children<\/a>‘s educational center. Among the authors of the works presented here are many foreign citizens, including the British and French.<\/p>\n

Innovative technologies<\/a> allowed the organizers of the expositions to turn into reality the idea of \u200b\u200ba harmonious art space that unites aesthetic opposites. The first gallery presents masterpieces of painting, arts and crafts created before and during the reign of the Joseon Dynasty. In the second – brilliant creations of contemporary sculptors and artists. It is noteworthy that the buildings of the pavilions fully correspond to the exhibits. One was built following the example of medieval Asian fortresses, the other – in the spirit of futurism.<\/p>\n

Myeongdong Cathedral<\/a><\/h2>\n

The cathedral was built according to the canons of neo-gothic style. The height of the building with the spire: 70 meters. There is a clock on the top of the temple<\/a> tower. At the beginning of the last century, the cathedral was the tallest building in the city. It is named after the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The main relic of the temple: the burial of local martyrs – priests who died during the reign of the Joseon Dynasty.<\/p>\n

The unique architectural monument is recognized as a national treasure; it was built at the expense of French Christian missionaries. The ambiguous attitude of the generally tolerant Seoul people towards the temple and its paris<\/a>h is explained by the following. The traditional religion of Korea is Buddhism, and it influences state policy. Christians in the state are a religious minority, but they constantly participate in opposition movements, guided by the ideals of European democracy, which does not affect the reputation of the church in the best way.<\/p>\n

Dongdaemun Gate<\/h2>\n

The magic of the oldest urban building, a visiting card, is difficult for Europe<\/a>ans to understand. “Dongdaemun” is an ambiguous expression. Literally translated, it is simply “the big gate on the east side.” The gate has another name: Heunginjimun – “the place where kindness (virtue) rises.” It is also associated with the East, which among Koreans symbolizes material and spiritual benefits.<\/p>\n

Gates, according to the beliefs of many nations, are an important link between the worlds of the living and the dead. The destruction of such structures among the Koreans is comparable to a national tragedy. Therefore, caring for Hynginjimun is at the same time the preservation of a unique monument, a manifestation of respect for the memory of ancestors and piety. Dongdaemun was built at the end of the 14th century.<\/p>\n

Since that time, the building has been reconstructed several times. The current appearance of the gate was acquired in the 19th century. Once they were part of the fortress wall, they performed defensive functions. For centuries, funds for the restoration of the gate were allocated by representatives of the ruling Joseon dynasty of Korea.<\/p>\n

Dongdaemun Market<\/h2>\n

The marketplace is located next to the gate of the same name. This is quite a common practice for the East, when neighboring streets, squares and even buildings are named after one well-known object. Tour<\/a>ists often have to specify “which dongdaemun” they want to see<\/a>, which, in general, is not necessary, because the same-named ancient monuments are usually located within walking distance from each other.<\/p>\n

The market opened at the beginning of the last century. During the Korean War, Dongdaemun was left in ruins, but it was rebuilt. Today, over 150 thousand Korean citizens work here, 7% of the market staff are professional designers. Today, Dongdaemun, the largest wholesale and retail marketplace, acts as a giant factory for the production of branded clothing. The market, where you can bargain and buy quality things, is always popular with tourists<\/a> and residents of the city.<\/p>\n

Deoksugung Palace<\/h2>\n

The palace-residence of the Joseon Dynasty that ruled Korea dates back to the 15th century. Toksugung is part of the complex of the five main royal palaces, but is inferior in size to similar structures. The main feature of the residence: during the construction of a number of buildings, European architectural solutions were applied. At one time, conservative Seoulites compared this to a challenge to the traditions of their ancestors.<\/p>\n

Deoksugung consists of 12 facilities and covers an area of \u200b\u200bover 60,000 square meters. Initially, there were 180 buildings. Fires and wars caused irreparable damage to the residence, but even today Toksugun, hidden behind the fortress wall, looks peacefully and solemnly. On its territory, a garden and secret passages have been preserved, which allowed members of the royal family to save their lives.<\/p>\n

The palace was first opened to the public in the 1930s. Here you can see the rooms where representatives of the Joseon Dynasty lived, expositions of palace treasures and works of modern art.<\/p>\n

National Museum of Korea<\/h2>\n

One of the most popular art objects in Asia covers an area of \u200b\u200babout 137 thousand square meters and is among the top most visited museums in the world. It is a unique cultural center, where, as if in a fantastic reality, various areas of art are intertwined. The museum presents unique artifacts, historical relics, works of Korean masters and masterpieces created in neighboring countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His first exhibitions were opened in 1945. In order to protect 220,000 unique relics from natural disasters and pass them on to their descendants, a new special building was erected for the National Museum in the 21st century. Outwardly, it resembles a medieval Asian fortress. Even if earthquakes destroy neighboring skyscrapers, the museum, as seismologists assure, will stand. The structure of the art object includes galleries, lecture halls, exhibition halls intended for children, cafes, restaurants.<\/p>\n

Bongeuns Temple<\/h2>\n

Guidebooks assure: there is no analogue of this building in the world. Age of the Buddhist shrine: more than 1200 years. The difference between the ancient and modern location of the temple: about a kilometer. Initially, the building served only a cult role. Today, the activity of the temple includes the functions of a cultural center. You can learn a lot of interesting<\/a> things about Korean folk traditions and customs<\/a> from the clergy.<\/p>\n

The temple complex<\/a> is located in the most prestigious area. It creates the impression of complete detachment from the hustle and bustle. There are no noisy crowds of tourists here. Mass religious holidays<\/a> in the temple are held quietly, decorously. It is, as the Seoulians say, ideal for meditation. The first daily temple service begins at dawn. Pilgrims from all over the world come to pray at the main relic of Bongeuns: an ancient stone Buddha statue, whose height is 28 meters.<\/p>\n

Bank of Korea Money Museum<\/h2>\n

Turning the head office of the bank into a museum of money is a very logical decision. However, the expositions located in such a building are devoted not only to numismatics. The main purpose of the new cultural object was to promote the economic achievements of the state. The official start date is June 13, 2001, but the formation of its funds began earlier. For those who are indifferent to economics and numismatics, it also makes sense to visit this building, whose total area is 8 thousand square meters.<\/p>\n

It was built at the beginning of the last century. After the fighting in the 50s, it was restore<\/a>d in record time. The bank office is an architectural monument atypical for Asia. When looking at its exterior, examining the luxurious premises, one gets the feeling that the time machine moved the building from the European Renaissance to modern Korea.<\/p>\n

Naksan Park<\/h2>\n

Literally, the name of the park means: “camel mountain”. Guests tend to visit it in order to admire the city from the top at any time of the day. The park was opened at the beginning of the 21st century, but the trees located on its territory are much older. Many of them were planted centuries ago and are a memory of the times when Korea was ruled by the Joseon Dynasty.<\/p>\n

Naksan is intended for lovers of silence and hiking, those who value the beauty of nature more than entertainment venues. Its main value: a unique landscape. The main walking park route<\/a> runs along the ancient fortress wall. The historical monument literally miraculously survived during the years of the Japanese occupation of Korea.<\/p>\n

Jongmyo Temple<\/h2>\n

The sanctuary was erected at the end of the 14th century. It acquired its current appearance after 300 years. The stories of the Confucian temple and the ruling Joseon Dynasty of Korea are closely intertwined. The construction was repeatedly completed, restored after earthquakes, fires, military operations. For the Seoulites, it has become a symbol of people's memory.<\/p>\n

The temple is dedicated to the spirits of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty and consists of 19 halls. The building does not attract attention with the luxury of interior and exterior decoration. The ascetic building is intended exclusively for memorial and funeral rites. The shrine is named after the rituals performed here by Confucians. To this day, people are not allowed to enter the southern gate of the temple – they are intended for the spirits of the royal family that was interrupted at the beginning of the last century.<\/p>\n

Park Overpass Seoullo 7017<\/h2>\n

The old road junction was expected to be dismantled, but local authorities found a new use for it. The recreational area was placed right on the overpass. The length of the amazing park was about a kilometer. It took over 24,000 plants to create it. An important nuance: the city authorities plan to make the park (open for free admission) self-sustaining, turning it into a nursery that will supply seeds and seedlings for sale.<\/p>\n

Seoul Skygarden began to function in 2017, work on its arrangement is still ongoing. The construction of additional crossings made it possible to connect the park with hotels<\/a>, shopping<\/a> and entertainment centers. Nowadays, additional terraces and art objects appear on the territory of the park. Since its opening, Seoullo 7017 has become one of Korea's most popular outdoor exhibition venues.<\/p>\n

Starfield Library<\/h2>\n
