Today we will tell you about an independent trip to Macau (Maomen) – an administrative region of China. This is a special district of the Republic of China, located<\/a> on the shores of the South<\/a> China<\/a> Sea<\/a>. It occupies the territory of the entire Macau Peninsula and the island<\/a>s of Taipa and Coloane. Macau is conside<\/a>red a state within a state with its own legislation and currency.<\/p>\n

Story<\/h2>\n

Since the 15th century, this part<\/a> of China has been a Portuguese colony for several centuries. And only a year before the millennium, in 1999, the PRC regained this territory, leasing it only until 2049. The Portuguese brought with them to these lands European culture, religion, education and crafts, and this trace has remained to this day. In Macau, the traditions of China and Europe are closely intertwined – in local customs<\/a>, in language and, of course, in architecture.<\/p>\n

Some kind of double code of life dominates here – Buddhist temples receive believers along with Catholic cathedral<\/a>s, the population not only speaks two languages, but street names are also written, a culinary riot of aromas of both Chinese and Portuguese cuisine reigns. But first things first.<\/p>\n

How to<\/a> get there<\/a><\/h2>\n

Macau welcomes guests both from mainland China and from the sea<\/a>. From the capital of China, tour<\/a>ist route<\/a>s can pass along the path of the Beijing<\/a>-Hong Kong-Macau high-speed highway. You can also get here by air. Macau International Airport, located on the island<\/a> of Taipa, receives many connecting flights. Of course, in comparison with neighboring Hong Kong, Macau airport's passenger traffic is much more modest, but it is the main air interchange for route<\/a>s to Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

However, the largest flow of tourists<\/a> to Macau comes from Hong Kong by sea. The piers from which boats leave for Macau are located on the mainland of Hong Kong, in the Kowloon area<\/a>, and on Hong Kong Island. If tour<\/a>ists may need the help of a guide to find the necessary pier in Kowloon, then the subway line delivers them directly to the pier in Hong Kong. To do this, you need to take the subway to Sheung Wan, find the exit to the Ferry and follow the signs towards the TurboJet ticket office. A boat ticket to Macau will cost about 120 HKD. Sea speed boats depart from Hong Kong Pier twice an hour, and the journey takes about 50 minutes.<\/p>\n

Right at the pier in Macau, tourists<\/a> are met by a lot of pretty girls and boys with various signs – these are barkers in hotel<\/a>s and casinos.<\/p>\n

Entertainment<\/a> and gambling center<\/a><\/h2>\n

Historically, Macau has always been a center<\/a> of trade, where Chinese and Portuguese merchants flocked. Trade route<\/a>s went from there to India and East Asia. It was the only place in China where Europeans lived. They brought here not only culture, but also all sorts of vices – gambling, drunkenness and robbery.<\/p>\n

By the 20th century, when the boom in trade had already been experienced, robberies, theft and fraud had disappeared, Macau left gambling in its heritage and turned into an Asian Monte Carlo – a center of entertainment and excitement. The center of bus<\/a>iness and trade by this time had moved to neighboring Hong Kong and retained this status to this day. It was thanks to these changes that Macau managed to maintain its unique patriarchal way of life and a relatively unhurried pace of life by Chinese standards.<\/p>\n

\"One<\/a><\/p>\n

Tourists arriving in Macau via Hong Kong will inevitably feel the difference between these districts of one country. It creates the feeling of moving from the capital to the province. Differences in everything – in the language of communication, cuisine, in the layout of the streets.<\/p>\n

Residents of Macau will never call themselves Chinese. They are makans! True, few people now communicate in Portuguese, mainly the Guangdong dialect of Chinese is heard. Many also understand English. But if the trip to Macau is not spontaneous, then it is better to prepare in advance or print out in Chinese the names of the places<\/a> you plan to see<\/a>. Then the locals will be able to help in their search.<\/p>\n

Excursions<\/a><\/h2>\n

In all places of arrival in Macau, tourists are greeted not only by crowds of touts in the casino, but also by many local residents who offer vying with guide services. Prices<\/a> immediately to the maximum – 2000 HKD. As the tourist becomes disinterest<\/a>ed in this service, the tariff instantly drops to 1000 and 500.<\/p>\n

You can negotiate a reasonable price and significantly reduce the time for independent searches for sights<\/a> on the map. But don't rush. The mainland of Macau is small, and it is quite possible to get around it in one day. And what a “tourist” pleasure you can get from<\/a> walking<\/a> along the old streets, trying to recognize in the faces of passers-by a native Chinese or a descendant of Portuguese settlers!<\/p>\n

How to get<\/a> to the city center<\/a><\/h2>\n

The city center<\/a> can be reached both on foot and by bus. Bus route<\/a>s are easy to figure out, as each stop has travel<\/a> patterns and fares. The movement of many of them is looped, so you can get on the way back at the same stop where you got off.<\/p>\n

The Hong Kong dollar in circulation here is almost equal to the national currency, the pataca, so you don't even have to worry about exchanging money. True, paying in dollars, the tourist will still receive change in Patacas. Travel<\/a> by bus must be paid only with coins and put them in special boxes (cash desks) at the entrance.<\/p>\n

Guests arriving in Macau not for the first time already know about small but useful bonuses prepared for hotel guests and casino visitors. These are free buses to various destinations<\/a> in Macau. Having a decent view and not burdened with suspicious luggage, tourists can easily use this method of moving around the city<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What to see<\/a> and do<\/h2>\n

Largo do Senado Square<\/h3>\n

First of all, everyone heads to the central square of Largo do Senado – the heart of Macau and the venue for all mass events. The architectural ensemble of the square takes travel<\/a>ers back to the times of the colonial era. The colorful old streets leading to the square surprise with an abundance of souvenir shops and street food vendors. On holidays<\/a>, by the way, local goodies are distributed on the streets for free. Walking along the pavement of the central part of the city, every tourist will notice a characteristic feature of paving slabs under their feet. This is paving stones with marine motifs – waves, ships and inhabitants of the seas<\/a>. A piece of Portugal<\/a> on Asian soil.<\/p>\n

Cathedral of St. Paul<\/h3>\n

The historical sights<\/a> of the central part of the city include the Cathedral of St. Paul, or rather, its ruins, left after a terrible fire in the middle of the 19th century. Despite the fact that only a small part of the cathedral remains, the ruins look very impressive, and the imagination immediately draws a complete image of the residence of Catholicism in Asia. The surviving main staircase and facade of the St. Paul's were included in the UNESCO World<\/a> Heritage List<\/a> in 2005.<\/p>\n

Approaching the historical hill, the strings of tourist groups flock into a homogeneous mass, in which everyone is already subject to a single stream. It is good if the trip to Macau takes place on weekdays. On weekends and holidays<\/a>, the number of tourists increases many times, mainly due to the Chinese themselves, who come from the mainland. Prices<\/a> for everything, of course, jump from 1.5 to 2 times.<\/p>\n

Macau is very popular among the Chinese themselves. Firstly, because gambling is prohibited in China, and secondly, Macau is an exotic place for the Chinese, an island of Europe in Asia. The flavor of colonial influence is supported by several more historical sights<\/a>. Tourist itineraries always grab a visit to the church of St. Dominic, the temple of A-Ma and Fort Monte.<\/p>\n

Having examined the historical center and focusing on the remaining time, the guests of Macau have to think over the further route. You can go to the casino, admire the architectural features of famous hotels<\/a>, visit museum<\/a>s or become a member of some entertainment show. Macau seems very ambitious. As if trying to convince everyone around – “I am the most, the most”!<\/p>\n

Show City of Dreams<\/h3>\n

The City of Dreams show is the most spectacular world-class show that can only be seen in Macau. The symbiosis of theater, dance, acrobatics and even underwater stunts lead all spectators without exception to indescribable delight. Genre is hard to define. This is a fairy tale with amazing scenery and characters, and a circus with acrobats, aerialist<\/a>s and divers.<\/p>\n

Surprise<\/a> and flying overhead bikers who do not use insurance. This is a transforming theatre, the stage of which can turn into a huge pool. The show is 85 minutes long and takes place every day at 17:00 and 20:00. Cost from 500 to 2000 HKD.<\/p>\n

macau tower<\/h3>\n

So it is customary to talk about the famous Macau tower in superlatives. It is visible within a radius of several kilometers, and the best views open from there. But the main attraction of the tower for tourists is its bungee, the highest in the world among urban structures. The jumping site is located at an altitude of 233 meters, where 200 of them can be free-falled. There are so many daredevils that you have to stand in line. The cost of this pleasure is 1000 HKD. But not everyone, having already risen to the start, dares to overcome this milestone.<\/p>\n

You can try to overcome your fear by walking along the parapet around the tower, which is 1.5 meters wide. There are no railings or fences. Luckily there is insurance. This is another kind of attraction that will take 500 HKD out of the tourist's pocket.<\/p>\n

Any tourist guide calls Macau a city of celebration and excitement. Even if there is no desire to place a bet, it is worth visiting the casino. It should be noted that none of the visitors ignores the Venetian Casino Hotel. The easiest way to get here is by taxi<\/a> or the hotel's free shuttle bus.<\/p>\n

Show City of Dreams<\/h3>\n

You can combine a walk in the hotel with a visit to the City of Dreams show. They are located at a small distance from each other. This entertaining monster is an exact copy of the casino in Las Vegas, only on a much larger scale. In front of the huge building are all the symbols of St. Mark's Square, and inside – exact copies of fountains, statues and frescoes from Venetian palace<\/a>s. Not to see this place while visiting Macau is just a crime. This entertainment factory can simultaneously receive more than 15 thousa<\/a>nd visitors.<\/p>\n

On one of the levels of the complex there is a whole trading city. Overhead here is an artificial sky that does not know the change of day and night. The lanterns turned on and the clouds turning pink make it clear that it is the hour before sunset in Venice<\/a>. It's time to take your time and stroll past the bright shop windows and ride in a fabulous gondola through the canals of this illusory city.<\/p>\n

Holidays<\/a> in Macau<\/h2>\n

In the world ranking, Macau ranks first in terms of the number of holidays<\/a>. Sleepless casinos alone carry the atmosphere of endless euphoria. Festive spectacles in Macau succeed each other without interruption. Any guest becomes their witness, regardless of the time of his stay. Hungry Ghost Day and Water Sprinkling Festival, Buddha Day and Moon Festival, Lover's Festival and Gourmet Festival are just a few of the activities that do not end here all year round.<\/p>\n
