Here, far from prying eyes, in the very depths of the Melissani cave, numerous ceremonies took place. The first to discover a place for the future sanctuary of the ancient Greeks was a local shepherd named Giannis Petrohelios, who accidentally wandered into these part<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

It was after his enthusiastic story that the cave was chosen as a place for religious sacraments. This is indicated by archaeological finds, among which was found a figurine of the Greek god Pan, who has long been conside<\/a>red the patron of nature and shepherds. Numerous figurines of nymphs and an unusual drawing of a woman were also found here. All these finds and many other items found in the cave can be seen in the museum of the city<\/a> of Argostoli, which is the capital of the island<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to local legend, the cave, along with the lake, was formed as a result of an unhappy love between a nymph named Melissani and the Greek god Pan. There are several interpretations of the story, but the essence is the same – love was unhappy, and the nymph suffered from the amorous nature of Pan. The cave became her refuge, where she shed tears for days. It was from the tears of Melissani that the turquoise lake was formed. Indeed, the waters of an underground reservoir taste very similar to human tears. Everyone can verify this by scooping up a little transparent liquid in the palm of your hand.<\/p>\n

From here came the modern belief, according to which, if lovers, sailing on a boat on the lake, wash each other with water, then they will live a long and happy life. The lake will help those who are unlucky in love. You just need to scoop up water and wash. And soon the man will meet his destiny.<\/p>\n

At first sight you fall in love with the cave, the entrance to which is generously decorated with greenery, and its walls are covered with numerous stalagmites and stalactites.<\/p>\n

If you spend the whole day on the lake, you will notice that the water in it changes color. That lake buoys with emerald hues, like a rare emerald, then it appears before tourists in a dress of a heavenly shade, then it scares away visit<\/a>ors with dark colors, like the ocean.<\/p>\n

The depth in the lake is quite decent and in some places reaches 15 meters. Similar figures will be shown to you by a thermometer dipped into water. Despite this, the sun's rays, penetrating deep, allow you to perfectly see all the local inhabitants, among which there are eels, and mullet, and even small sea<\/a> snakes. They are quite comfortable in cool water, the temperature of which rarely exceeds 15 degrees.<\/p>\n
