This is music frozen in stone, which sounds like the chime of bells on Salzburg Square. For a long time it was Bavarian, but the redistribution of borders did not affect its magnificence. The city<\/a> is visited by up to a million tour<\/a>ists, many come back for new experiences.<\/p>\n

Fortress Hohensalzburg<\/h2>\n

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is rightfully considered the main attraction. Built more than nine centuries ago, in the era of the ongoing struggle for power between the king and the pope, this fortress complex is the largest among such structures in Europe<\/a>. For many centuries of existence of this huge fortification, Hohensalzburg performed not only a defensive function.<\/p>\n

During the peasant uprisings in the 15th-16th centuries, the fortress served as a residence for some prince-archbishops, and at the beginning of the 17th century the fortress became a place of imprisonment for noble persons.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, everyone can visit the fortress to admire the picturesque ornaments of the Golden Hall and the Golden Chamber, as well as luxurious carvings made in the Gothic style. The splendor of the fortress premises attracts artists from all over the world<\/a> to Hohensalzburg, for whom from time to time courses of the International Summer<\/a> Academy are held on the territory of the fortress.<\/p>\n

Mozart House Museum<\/h2>\n

Once the building belonged to the grocer Johan Haguenauer. Father V.A. Mozart acquired the position of court musician under the Archbishop of Salzburg. He became wealthy and successful, becoming famous as the best violin teacher, and not just as the father of a little genius.<\/p>\n

The violinist of the court chapel Leopold Mozart and a resident of house number 9 settled with his family on Geitergasse street on the 3rd floor. At this time, the first opus of the young Amadeus, who had a phenomenal musical memory, was published. He memorized and wrote down exactly the many-voiced score of the Miserere in the chapel of the Cathedral<\/a>, whose notes were forbidden to be copied and distributed.<\/p>\n

In the city<\/a> archives, this building is referred to as the “Dance Master's House” (since 1713). Here, a certain Lorenz Spekner gave dance lessons for the noble elite, preparing them to attend balls and social events. In October 1944, part of the house was hit by an air strike. Fountains, grottoes, luxurious palace halls from the moment the residence was founded began to attract a noble audience to Hellbrunn for entertainment and various kinds of festive events. This tradition of holding magnificent festivities and unforgettable theatrical performances in the Stone Theater, created on the site of a former stone quarry, continues to this day. Residenzplatz<\/h2>\n

Getreidegasse street<\/h2>\n

The heart of Old Salzburg pulsates in the Getreidegasse, where the former Grain Lane is. In a small apartment, the genius of classical music, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was born, where crowds of tourists<\/a> flock. The snow-white Schloss Mirabell Salzburg was built in 1606 for Prince-Bishop Wolf Dietrich von Reitenau. He wanted a building outside the city limits, a summer residence, so as not to draw the attention of the townspeople to his life.<\/p>\n

Initially, the Altenau Palace was intended for secret meetings of the nobleman with his beloved, Salome Alt. Rumors quickly reached the Pope, the archbishop was removed from office, his nephew became the successor to the meeting place of “forbidden love”. He gave the estate a new name – Mirabell Palace (Italian for “very beautiful”). After the restoration from the consequences of a fire in 1818, the building acquired new features. A courtyard and a landscape gardening complex appeared in the English style. Furniture and interiors are almost completely lost.<\/p>\n

Open-air museum<\/h2>\n

A huge complex with an area of \u200b\u200bmore than 50 hectares. It attracts hundreds of thousa<\/a>nds of visitors every year. There is no other place where you can learn in detail about the culture of the Austrians, see household items and learn about traditional crafts. The history<\/a> of the Cathedral is full of events, which local guides willingly tell about. The first building dates back to 774, in 1167 the church was burned to the ground, then repeatedly restored. The last project was implemented in 1614-1628. The cathedral is also notable for the fact of the baptism of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but later he joined the Freemasons. Today, this building with magnificent interior decoration is part of the cultural heritage of Austria.<\/p>\n

Modern Art Museum<\/h2>\n

The Museum of Modern Art has settled in the most futuristic building in the city. It looks like a space object on the M\u00f6nchsberg mountain above the rooftops of Old Salzburg. It also hosts international art exhibitions. This is a multi-level building with an area of \u200b\u200b2300 sq.m., where the works of European artists of the 20th – 21st centuries are exhibited.<\/p>\n

The museum was built in 2004, this is a competition project of the architectural bureau of Friedrich Hoff and Zwink from Munich. Marble was used in the cladding. There are many innovative solutions here, including glass stairwells with panoramic views. The collection is constantly updated. Some of the city's paintings are exhibited in another building.<\/p>\n

The works of young artists gained fame here, these are Rebecca Horn, Ernst Haas, Erwin Wurm, Oskar Kokoschka. In parallel, unique<\/a> photo<\/a>graphs (over 17,000 works) are exhibited. Abbey of Saint Peter<\/h2>\n

The monastery estates began to be built up in the 7th century, at the initiative of the missionary Rupert, the patron saint of Salzburg. Gradually the city grew, the Abbey of St. Peter expanded. The unique architectural ensemble bears the features of romanticism, renaissance and baroque. In 1622, the Catholic University was opened within these walls, in the library of which rare manuscripts, notes by Mozart and Haydn were kept. Mass in B minor by Mozart, written for the services of the monastery, is performed at musical events.<\/p>\n

The oldest monastic order in the German lands has not curtailed its activities. The buildings of Stift Sankt Peter were destroyed and rebuilt after fires and vandal raids. This is a typical monastery at the foot of the M\u00f6nchsberg with its refectory, bakery and water mill. The former residence of the archbishops belongs to the monastery (partially open to visitors).<\/p>\n

Cemetery of Saint Peter<\/h2>\n

Historically significant object – St. Peter's Cemetery. One of the oldest burial places in Europe, where important people and celebrities found eternal rest. Their names are inscribed in the history<\/a> of Austria in gold letters, although the tombstones and crosses look very modest. There are graves of clergymen, scientists, artists and musicians, the gravestone of Mozart's sister Nannerl.<\/p>\n

The territory of St. Peter's Cathedral was built up in 1143, although only the foundation and basement have been preserved. Citizens came here, V.A. played the organ. Mozart. Part of the buildings of a later time, XVII-XVIII centuries. The territory of the cemetery remained untouched – a small piece of land under the wall of the Cathedral.<\/p>\n

Of great interest are Gothic chapels, sculptures, tombstones in the Romanesque style, forged fences and family crypts. The oldest grave is dated 803, it was a cemetery of commoners. Later, an order was issued that only important people should rest at the Cathedral.<\/p>\n

nonnberg abbey<\/h2>\n

At the foot of the Fortress Hill stands the monastery of the Benedictine Nonnberg. The monastery is famous for<\/a> its unique Gothic fa\u00e7ade, wall paintings and ceiling frescoes. The multi-faceted altar with the Virgin Mary in the late Gothic style is a true treasure of the monks. Wall painting is an undoubted historical value of a religious building.<\/p>\n

The Romanesque basilica was founded at the turn of the 1st and 2nd millennia, by order of Kaiser Henry II, it was consecrated in 1009. The first abbess of the Nonnberg Abbey, Ehrentrud, was canonized as the patron saint of Salzburg. Her tomb is located in the rock crypt of the Church of Our Lady. This place rivals in beauty the collection of the Cathedral. The Crucifix dating back to 1300 is considered unique.<\/p>\n

Much of the life of the monks is hidden from outsiders, but one story went beyond the walls of the monastery, inspiring the creation of the film “The Sound of Music”. The novice of the monastery Maria von Kutschera, being seconded governess, married a widowed baron. She organized a family choir, and this plot formed the basis of the musical. Today it is a functioning convent, but only church buildings are open to the public.<\/p>\n

Museum of the Nativity<\/h2>\n

There are several similar Nativity Museums in Europe. The basis of the Salzburg exposition is Christmas<\/a> tree decorations and Christmas symbols, gifts<\/a> and wishes, collected from 1840 to 1940. The collection of Ursula Kloiber grew into the Museum of the Nativity. For about 40 years, she collected exhibits in memory of the happy times of her childhood. There are no modern toys and garlands here, all exhibits are pre-war, calendars and postcards were made in the 1st half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n

Exhibition pavilion Red Bull “Angar-7”<\/h2>\n

For Europeans, castle<\/a>s, palaces and ancient fortresses are not uncommon. Leopoldskron was built in 1736 for the family of Leopold Firmian, although at that time the Bishop already owned the Residence, he bequeathed to bury his heart here. After his death, the owners changed several times. In 1918, it was bought by a theater director who began a full-scale reconstruction.<\/p>\n

Leopoldskron was visited by Winston Churchill and other celebrities. On weekends at the beginning of the twentieth century, the creative elite of Austria came here. They had the idea of \u200b\u200ban annual Salzburg Music Festival.<\/p>\n

The restoration of the church came to grips only in 1223. A large-scale reconstruction was carried out in the 15th century, the building was supplemented by a Gothic tower. Later, the bell tower was completed, which was ordered to be shortened – it turned out to be higher than the Cathedral. In the 19th century, a baroque spire was added. Within the walls of the church there is one shrine, touching which (according to belief), everyone becomes righteous through the forgiveness of the patron saint.<\/p>\n

Archbishop's Residence<\/h2>\n

The history<\/a> of the city has been embodied for many centuries by the Residence of the Archbishop of Salzburg. The building of 1120 is well preserved; it has been reconstructed several times. Wolf Dietrich von Reitenau did this in the 15th century. Today, an art gallery functions in the halls of the Old Residence.<\/p>\n

The residence for a long time served the rulers of the city, who had both a princely title and a priestly dignity. It was a place for official receptions and important meetings. This is an enfilade type building, many halls are connected by a common passage. Once upon a time, a Throne and a banquet hall, secluded apartments<\/a> for relax<\/a>ation and other premises were planned here.<\/p>\n

Today, visitors can see part of the treasury of the Old Residence. Antique clocks and paintings, tiled stoves, Venetian mirrors, crystal chandeliers and candelabra, ceiling frescoes. Capuchin Mountain<\/h2>\n

Opposite the Old Town, near the Salzach River, tourists have the opportunity to take pictures against the backdrop of the Kapuzinerberg mountain. The name was fixed from the monastery at its foot, the monastery of the Capuchin order. The buildings were reconstructed after the Napoleonic wars, whose troops plundered and desecrated the shrine of the Franciscans.<\/p>\n

At the top of the mountain there is an observation deck, where you can climb the countless steps (lift height is about 700 m). Not every high point in the vicinity of the city has a funicular. It is much easier to climb the Untersberg mountain with the help of a modern cable car.
