Most of the poor and not yet recognized artists lived in a hostel, the so-called Bato Lavoir, which translates as “laundry ship”. This building on Montmartre outwardly resembled a laundry barge, of which there were many in those days that sailed along the Seine. Living conditions in Bateau Lavoir were rather poor, and living conditions were rather primitive. The building was poorly heated, and the tenants barely fit in the narrow little rooms.<\/p>\n
