How to get<\/a> to Upper Bergamo<\/h2>\n

The territory of Bergamo is divided into 2 part<\/a>s: the Upper City<\/a> and the Lower. The second floor of the city<\/a> is interest<\/a>ing for its ancient sights<\/a>, architectural monuments, the same age as the Roman Empire, so most of the time should be devoted to exploring the upper part of Bergamo. You can get there<\/a> in three ways: on foot from the railway station 20-30 minutes; by funicular in 10 minutes or by bus<\/a> N 1 – 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

It all depends on your physical condition: if your health allows, it is best to climb the ancient stones on foot, admire the magnificent surrounding nature, breathe in the air of true Italy<\/a>. But the ascent on the funicular, in a comfortable trailer, is also a great pleasure from a short trip<\/a>, when amazing beauties are visible from above. The feeling is as if he found himself in a fairy-tale kingdom-state.<\/p>\n

Sights<\/a> of the Upper City<\/h2>\n

Castle<\/a> di San Vigilio<\/h3>\n

Leaving the funicular, you find yourself on a narrow, typically medieval street Via alla rossa, leading to the ancient castle<\/a> di San Vigilio. This fortification embodied the whole history<\/a> of not only Bergamo, but the whole of Italy<\/a>. Its ancient walls (the first mention of the castle in the 6th century AD) remember the Romans and barbarians who captured the fortress more than once. Several times the walls of the castle were strengthened and rebuilt. The last reconstruction took place in the 15th century during the era of the Venetian Republic. In this form, the fortress castle “survived” to this day, except for some destruction caused by the Austria<\/a>ns in 1829.<\/p>\n

Now tourists<\/a> have the opportunity to see<\/a> the gray stones of the fortress walls, touch them and feel the distant era. Here is a museum exhibiting historical documents, antiquities.<\/p>\n

How to<\/a> get to the castle: another funicular from Upper Bergamo leads to it, which will take you to di San Vigilio in 5 minutes. The funicular station is in front of the gates of San Alessandro. But keep in mind that during the siesta (12.30-14.30) the funicular does not work and it is convenient to calculate your time. It is not worth going up on foot to save energy for further inspection.<\/p>\n

You can come by bus N 1 from the railway station, getting off at the bus stop of the same name.<\/p>\n

The funicular operates every day from 10.00 am to 20.00 pm; Friday, Sat \u2013 until 01.30; Sun – from 09.00 to 22.45, except for siesta. A siesta in Bergamo is a mandatory break, a holy deed, a tradition that has developed over the centuries. When planning your next visit<\/a>, you need to remember this and use this time for relax<\/a>ation too.<\/p>\n

Church of the patron saint of Bergamo<\/h3>\n

Descending from the hill of San Vigilio, you find yourself on the Duomo (Cathedral) Square, where there is an architectural gem – the Cathedral of Sant'Alessandro (just in front of it the stop of the funicular), erected on the site of an old temple<\/a> of the 6th century. This true masterpiece is the work of two architects: Averulino (15th century) and Car<\/a>lo Fontano (17th century). The interiors were designed in the 18th century, and the dome was built on in the 19th century.<\/p>\n

The inner content of the temple makes an indelible impression: the artistic masterpieces of ancient painters Giovanni Moroni, Tiepolo and others have found their worthy place here.<\/p>\n

The cathedral is open: every day, from 07.30 to 18.30; break – 12.00-15.00 entrance – 5 euros, preferential -3 euros (it is also valid for the Adriano Bernareqqi Museum)<\/p>\n

Church of Saint Mary Maggiore<\/h3>\n

Next to the cathedral is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, built in the 2nd century, from the 11th to the 13th. In the 17th century It organized the reconstruction of interiors in the lush baroque style, which amaze with their decoration. The facade of the church has retained the Romanesque style. The famous 18th century composer Donizetti, who was born in Bergamo, is buried here.<\/p>\n

Architectural masterpiece – Colleone Chapel<\/h3>\n

The Colleone Chapel is attached to the basilica – a real architectural miracle, the facade of which is decorated with elegant bizarre openwork, rose windows, crowned with an intricate dome. The chapel was erected as a tomb over the ashes of an important person in Italy<\/a> – Bartolomeo Colleone in 1476 (later his daughter Medea was buried here). Inside<\/a> the chapel is just as beautiful: amazing frescoes by Tiepolo, an altar with magnificent statue<\/a>s of saints; paintings, gilded decorative details – everything is in the Renaissance style.<\/p>\n

The memory of Donizetti – a museum in the Palace of Mercy<\/h3>\n

From Piazza Duomo, walk along the typical medieval Via Arena to building number 9 to see the Mercy Palace. It is interesting not only as an architectural monument, but also as a museum of the aforementioned Gaetano Donizetti. It exhibits exhibits – evidence of the life and work of a talented composer, whose operas are still being performed on the stages of the famous opera houses of the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The next object worthy of attention is located in the neighborhood – the Archaeological Museum, which has the most interesting<\/a> exhibits of antiquity, household items of the Lombards.<\/p>\n

A real monument of antiquity here is the town hall (12th century) Palazzo della Ragione. Its facade is crowned with the symbol of the Venetian Republic – a sculpture of a winged lion holding an open book with its paw, personifying peacetime.<\/p>\n

The Town Hall is open: June-Sept. Tue-Sun., from 10.00 am to 21.00 pm; Sat, Sun – until 23.00; Oct-May: Tue-Fri \u2013 9.30 am to 5.30 pm; Sat, Sun – 10.00-18.00. Ticket – 5 euros, preferential – 3 euros.<\/p>\n

Campanone tower<\/h3>\n

Opposite the palace-town hall, another more ancient architectural monument is the Campanone tower (11th century, rebuilt in the 15th century after a fire). If you look down from the top of the tower, you will see a picture that allows you to forget for a moment that it is the 21st century in the yard: the color of the Middle Ages is so strong. The bells of the tower beat 180 beats at 22 o'clock, as it was in the old days when the city gates were closed.<\/p>\n

Next to the Palazzo Ragione – the New Palace – a classic light building with columns, built in the 17th century as an administrative building. City officials worked in it until 1873, and now it houses the rich library of May, a famous Italian philologist and cardinal of the 19th century. If you go around the New Palace, behind it you can see the oldest structure of the square – the church of San Michele al Arco (857), where the university is located today.<\/p>\n

One of them is the Carrara Academy, an art gallery founded by the city's famous patron of arts, Count Giacomo Carrara. In this artistic treasury, visitors are delighted with more than 2,000 paintings by the fine masters of the brush of Italy: Raphael, Botticelli, Mantegna and Titian. I would like to note the patriotism of the Italians: they do not keep masterpieces in private collections, do not make them an object of profit, but willingly give them to museums and galleries.<\/p>\n
