Excavations carried out in the historical center revealed thermal baths of the 1st-2nd centuries AD. e. with changing rooms and swimming pools, the remains of the walls and floors of which are lined with mosaics. The water in them circulated through a complex system of ceramic pipes. All this is evidence that even then the city had a well-developed infrastructure, although according to official documents, the capital of Georgia (Iberia) was founded in the 5th century by King Vakhtang Gorgasali. The results of the excavations refuted these data and proved that Tbtlada, indicated on the early Roman maps (1-2 centuries AD), is the current Tbilisi. In it, as in other ancient cities, there are many ancient sights. But not everyone knows that Narikala is an ancient fortress located on the Holy Mountain, Mtatsminda, famous in poetry and songs. The fortress walls and towers amaze the imagination with their external impregnable power. Looking at the monumental structures from a distance, you understand how much labor, effort and effort have been invested in this ancient defensive fortification.

Presumably, the fortress is the same age as the city and expanded along with the expansion of the city's borders. The fortress walls descend in steps directly to the waters of the Kura, which allowed the owners of Narikala to control the trade routes passing next to the river. The Mongols, having taken possession of the fortress, called it “Naryn-kala” – the Small Fortress. Nature also tested Narikala for strength: the earthquake of 1827 caused a lot of damage to the towers and walls. Indeed, even in the translation “tbili” sounds like “warm”, which eloquently confirms the presence in the city of a large number of hot springs, the healing power of which was experienced by the locals. Therefore, from the 16th century, enterprising townspeople actively equipped baths at the site of the springs.

All of them were basically rather simple low-rise buildings in the oriental style, with semicircular domes, in which large glass windows were located in the center. Built in 1868 during the governorship of Count Vorontsov, the palace embodied in its architecture and interior decoration the historical grandeur and significance of the progressive royal governor in the life of Georgia. Probably, due to the inaccessibility of these places, the monastery stood abandoned for a long time, until it was discovered by the architect and amateur artist Gagarin, who studied the surroundings. Having become the property of public interest, the monastery was revived anew and became the dwelling place of the monks (until 1963). There is a unique architectural monument of antiquity above the confluence of two mountain rivers Vera and Bethany, hence the name of the monastery, built in honor of the Virgin.

Now on the monastery territory there is a massive church of the Nativity of the Virgin and service buildings. The Caucasian Museum (as it was called before) was founded in 1825 by the Imperial Geographical Society of Russia and over the years of its existence it has endured many trials and relocations of exhibits. In total, the museum system includes 13 museums, the main of which are located just in this building on Rustaveli Avenue.

The expositions on the first floor reveal the ancient Iberian history of Georgia, demonstrating unique finds discovered during excavations of the famous Trialeti mound. The most unique exhibit is the fossilized human fragments of Homo ergaste – the oldest evidence (1.8 million years) of human existence outside Africa.

Similar remains were previously found only on the African continent. Truly priceless rarities are a collection of stones with Urartian inscriptions on them. Facades made of rough stone are decorated with sculptural bas-reliefs, stucco garlands and wreaths (the latter are made in mourning for the owner's daughter) give the building a unique flavor.

Corner turrets, elegant bay windows (protruding interior parts of the premises) allowed the house to be a champion in height and originality of design for a long time. The windows of the upper tier are decorated with openings resembling teardrops in shape. An underground space of several floors was formed under the above-ground part of the house, where shops, a pharmacy, and a hairdresser were located. In ancient times, it occupied a site in front of the entrance (Kojori) gates to the fortress. The territory was used to accommodate visitors, so the square was called Hotel. In the 19th century, it was named after the conqueror of the Erevan fortress – General I. Paskevich. The perimeter of the square was actively built up. A large caravanserai of the merchant Tamamshev and the building of the city theater appeared here. The square became known as the Theater Square.

In the 20th century, the square changed its name several times, in accordance with political trends: the Transcaucasian Federation, Beria, Lenin. For a long time, a monument to the leader of the proletariat stood on it. In the 90s. he was eliminated. The central position was occupied by a column with a gilded figure of the patron saint of Georgia, George the Victorious, trampling a dragon (35 m). The author is Z. Its history began in 1927, when a plot of 100 hectares was allocated at the intersection of the Vake and Saburtalo districts for the placement of enclosures with animals. The zoo was created not only as an entertainment complex, but also as a scientific center. The zoologists who worked in it paid attention to the study of the behavior of animals, their acclimatization, conducted experiments on crossing and breeding new species.

The plan of the zoo provided for the division into zones. In one lived endemic inhabitants of the Caucasus. In the other, animals from different natural zones of the USSR (forest, steppe, desert, etc.) were presented.
