There are many authentic interesting places<\/a>, rare cultural and historical monuments and architectural masterpieces. To get a better idea of \u200b\u200bthe Finnish capital, we will tell you what to see<\/a> in Helsinki in two days on your own<\/a>.<\/p>\n

First day<\/h2>\n

Whatever means of transport<\/a> you arrive in the capital of Finland (train, bus or ferry), you will immediately see the snow-white bulk of the Cathedral, located<\/a> on Senate Square, which (the square and the cathedral) are definitely worth a visit in the first place.<\/p>\n

Cathedral<\/a> and Senate Square<\/h3>\n

Looking at the grandiose building of amazing beauty, which is the Cathedral, you immediately understand how much time, effort and money was invested in this architectural miracle, which was built for 22 years (1830-1852). After the consecration, the cathedral became known as Nikolaevsky in honor of St. Nicholas and the Russian emperor, who took an indirect part<\/a> in the design of the sanctuary. By decree of Nicholas II, 12 sculptures of the apostles were installed on the roof of the cathedral, which became the main decorations of the external appearance of the church.<\/p>\n

In 1959, the Finnish authorities awarded the temple<\/a> the status of a Lutheran cathedral, whose external classical beauty of architecture can be admired endlessly. Slender colonnades, graceful pilasters, picturesque bas-reliefs, statue<\/a>s of saints, dazzling whiteness of the walls, the brilliance of domes create a truly divine picture. However, entering the interior of the cathedral, you observe the contrast between the external luxury and the internal Lutheran rigor of decoration.<\/p>\n

The simplicity<\/a> of the decoration of the altar, the absence of lush decorations, golden luster correspond to the status of a Lutheran church. There are statues of the founders of this religion – Martin Luther (not King), F. Melanchthon and M. Agricola. The altar is decorated with a painting by Neff. If you're lucky, you might hear a rehearsal of the world famous Boys' Choir.<\/p>\n

Senate Square, created after the annexation of Finland<\/a> to Russia, is the main square of the state, where the central place is occupied by the majestic building of the State Council, in which the government of the country sits. The center<\/a> of the square is decorated with a grandiose monument to Emperor Alexander II, depicted in an officer's uniform, in an oratorical pose. At the bottom of the granite pedestal are 4 allegorical sculptures: Law, Labor, Light and Peace. On the corner of Senate Square is one of the oldest buildings in the city – Sederholm House, which is worth a visit.<\/p>\n

Helsinki City Museum<\/h3>\n

Now the house of the merchant Sederholm houses the City Museum, a visit to which is a kind of journey through time. Getting to know the expositions that tell about the past is called “Time Machine”, which takes you from room to room, where different eras of Finns' life are presented. With the help of modern technologies: video projections, 3D glasses, three-dimensional pictures of the pre-revolutionary past and the illusory presence of visitors on the streets of the city are created.<\/p>\n

Moving through the halls of the museum, you can see<\/a> the life of the Finns, sit in an armchair and even lie on a sofa or bed, see items that have long been out of use. The museum is not limited to the Cederholm House – an outdoor museum complex has been created here, including the modern Torni skyscraper, from the top floor of which a stunning panorama of the city opens. Market Square<\/h3>\n

Just as Odessa cannot be imagined without the famous Privoz, so it is impossible to imagine Helsinki without the Market Square, where there is a lively trade. The square is located right on the coast, against the backdrop of the magnificent facade of the Preside<\/a>ntial Palace<\/a>, Esplanade Park, port facilities, which gives the square a bright picturesqueness. On weekends, the square is seething with people, there is a brisk trade. Here you can enjoy delicious fish (even for free), drink coffee, buy national Finnish souvenirs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fountain Havis Amanda<\/h3>\n

On the Market Square there is an unusual symbol – the fountain Havis Amanda or “Nymph of the Sea<\/a>s”, created by the French sculptor of Finnish origin Wahlgren. In love with his young, 19-year-old wife Marcel, the sculptor conveyed his feelings by making the figure of a naked mermaid an exact copy of his beloved wife. When the sculpture was installed during the installation of the fountain, a public scandal arose due to the nakedness of the nymph. Representatives of feminist organizations and the mayor of the city were especially indignant, because the fountain was installed in front of the administration building.<\/p>\n

To hush up the scandal, Wahlgren paid part of his money to install a naked mermaid. Gradually, all chaste citizens calmed down and even fell in love with the erotic design of the fountain, making it a favorite place for dates and student meetings. Reckless students frolic at the fountain, putting on their hats to the graceful mermaid, who has become one of the symbols of the city.<\/p>\n

A fountain with a statue of a nymph separates the Market Square from the picturesque central Esplanade Park, located between the two main shopping<\/a> streets. Ferris wheel<\/h3>\n

After the park, you should definitely visit the Ferris wheel, installed on the Katajanokka pier. In translation, the name of the grandiose structure sounds like “heavenly wheel” – its height is 40 m. In the prestigious quarter of the Finnish capital (not far from the center<\/a> of Senate Square) is the Orthodox Assumption Cathedral – the center of Orthodoxy in Finland in the 19th century. Now a magnificent building is adjacent to a worthy environment: the Katajanokki quarter has long become a prestigious district, the main decoration of which is the Assumption Cathedral. Its Romanesque architecture makes the temple light and airy, despite its huge size. It is beautiful both externally and internally: copper domes, gilded cupolas, walls and ceilings painted inside in the Byzantine style – everything is admirable.<\/p>\n

Kiasma – Museum of Contemporary Art<\/h3>\n

The name of the modern Kiasma Museum, which can only be conditionally called a museum, is translated from English as “optic nerve crossing”. And this is no coincidence, because the optic nerves of visitors to an unusual museum often experience emotional shock from the paradoxical exhibits exhibited here. The huge building of the museum (more appropriately called the “center of the arts”) opened in 1998 as a cultural institution designed to reflect the entire spectrum of contemporary art in Finland.<\/p>\n

Interior design in avant-garde style, the cosmic scale of the exhibition halls, twisted spiral flights of stairs create an atmosphere of wide freedom. The original expositions present works of art of different genres in the most unexpected interpretations. The staff of the center is in constant sea<\/a>rch – the collections are regularly updated.<\/p>\n

Cultural and creative life is in full swing here: seminars, conferences, master classes in fine arts, modern dance lessons, film screenings, etc. are held. Walking<\/a> through the halls of Kiasma, you will be very impressed by the scope of modern Finnish art.<\/p>\n

Mannerheim Square<\/h3>\n

One of the outstanding Finnish military figures, President and Marshal Mannerheim imprinted his name on the longest avenue, starting from Shilnadskaya Square and stretching 5.5 km to the intercity highway. You will see the majestic monument to Mannerheim immediately at the exit from Kiasma – it is installed on the square of the same name (1960) at the beginning of the avenue. The bronze figure of a marshal on a horse embodies confidence and power, wisdom and selflessness.<\/p>\n

The sculptor depicted Mannerheim in the form of a cavalry general with great homage, car<\/a>efully sculpting all of his awards. The horse is superbly executed: all in motion, it seems alive, and not frozen in bronze. The height of the monument (11.7 m) allows you to see it from afar, enhancing the majesty and significance of the monument.<\/p>\n

Natural History<\/a> Museum<\/h3>\n

A visit to the Museum of Natural History<\/a>, located 450 meters from the Mannerheim monument, will help expand your understanding of the nature of the planet and Finland, its evolutionary development. From the first steps in a small museum, your imagination will be captivated by the most interesting exhibitions and exhibits. The entire history<\/a> of life on Earth from the Big Bang theory, the origin of the Universe, the period of giant animals to the present is presented here visually and volumetrically. Interesting will be an introductory voyage from north<\/a> to south, from the permafrost pole to the hot tropics, the exhibition “The bones tell” about fossil animals of antiquity. The thematic exhibition “Nature of Finland” introduces in detail the landscape of the country, the tundra of Lapland.<\/p>\n

Church in the rock – Temppeliaukio<\/h3>\n

A must visit is the unique<\/a> Lutheran church, whose name translates as “temple site”. Strict simplicity of design, it is consistent with the Lutheran canons. Just as crudely simple was the method of its construction: the Suomalainen brothers architects, having decided to make the walls of the church from rock materials. To implement the plan, a rock was blown up, and a dome was erected over the formed funnel. The space between the dome and the rocky walls was filled with windows (almost 200), solving the problem of lighting the temple with their help. An optical illusion creates the illusion of a huge height of the dome, which is actually not the case.<\/p>\n

The walls remained almost untouched, creating a beautiful natural backdrop in their own way. There are no bells in the church, their chime is heard from the recording in the speakers. It has amazing acoustics, which was admired by the best musicians in the world<\/a>. Concerts of organ and symphonic music are constantly held in churches, sometimes rock metallers perform, attracting young people to church services. Impressions from visiting Temppeliaukio are unforgettable.<\/p>\n

Monument to Sibelius<\/h3>\n

Jan Sibelius is a Finnish patriotic composer who is dearly loved by his people. The park of the same name and the memorial composition, the most unusual monument in Helsinki, have become a symbol of people's love for Sitbelius. Sculptor E. Hiltunen created an abstraction from copper pipes (600 pieces), as if imitating organ pipes, since the composer composed many organ works.<\/p>\n

The intricate interweaving of pipes is intended to express the essence of Sibelius's musical creativity, which the architect quite succeeded in, judging by the unprecedented public interest in the unusual monument. At the base of the pipe ensemble, the author created a sculptural portrait of the composer. Hiltunen's composition did not go unnoticed in the world: its mini-copies are in the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris<\/a> and the United Nations in New York. In Helsinki, to the monument to the beloved composer, “the folk trail does not overgrow.”<\/p>\n

Winter Garden \u2013 Talvipuutarha<\/h3>\n

Like many capitals of the world, Helsinki could not do without its botanical garden, which, due to the cold climate of Finland, can only be partially covered, winter. Despite the small area<\/a>, the garden is rich in diversity of flora: 200 species of plants grow in it. There are rose gardens, and jungles, and tropics, against which circus performances are played, concerts are arranged. All summer long, the open area of \u200b\u200bthe garden resembles a bright carpet of blooming roses of different varieties, and in spring, an incredibly beautiful spectacle of blooming orchids appears in the tropical hall.<\/p>\n

Visitors are allowed to come here for breakfast or lunch (with their own food) – a special section with tables and chairs is equipped here. Citizens and tourists<\/a> love to visit a beautiful corner of nature. A visit to the Winter Garden will give you great aesthetic pleasure!<\/p>\n

Chapel of Silence Kamppi<\/h3>\n

Near the bus station on the square. Narinkka, you can see a rather strange structure, resembling either a barrel, or a cocoon, or a UFO in shape. This is how Kamppi Chapel looks like – a chapel of silence, installed in a busy part of the city as an object in which you can relax<\/a> from street noise and roar. The futuristic architecture of the chapel is a tribute to the fashionable Finnish minimalist<\/a> design. It was built according to the program according to which Helsinki is considered as the world capital of design in 2012. This title was awarded to the city by the International Council of Industrial Design.<\/p>\n

The chapel is designed to restore<\/a> peace of mind, so in its windowless space, where the sounds of the street do not reach, there are psychologists, priests, representatives of social services who are ready to help, list<\/a>en, and give advice. The former Sveaborg (Swedish name) became Suomenlinna in 1918 and is now, in fact, an open-air military museum. In a short time it is impossible to completely bypass the entire territory of the bastion, but you can see its main attractions<\/a>: ancient cannons, fortifications, part of the coastal defense, visit the local museum, the Augusta Gallery and the Vessico submarine. The fortress is among the objects protected by UNESCO as an important historical monument of the past, which vividly resurrects before the eyes of thousa<\/a>nds of tour<\/a>ists visiting these legendary places.<\/p>\n
