The ancient city, which is part of the Golden Ring tour<\/a>ist route<\/a>, has about 780 historical monuments. It is impossible to get around everything, but among the main attractions of the city it is recommended to see the following churches and temples of Yaroslavl.<\/p>\n

Transfiguration Cathedral<\/h2>\n

The appearance of the first version of the monastery dates back to 1186. The spiritual center of Yaroslavl<\/a> was turned into a stone building with the support of the Rostov prince Konstantin. The majestic stone Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior grew on its territory.<\/p>\n

The ancient temple of the 16th century was included in the world heritage list<\/a>s. Old manuscripts were kept in the library of the cathedral. Among them was found “The Tale of Igor's Campaign”. Now full information about the book, the method of its creation is provided by an interesting exposition of the museum at the Cathedral. But the fire destroyed this building.<\/p>\n

Now there is, erected on the remains of the foundation, a new Cathedral. The architectural complex of the city includes the Sacred Gates, the Refectory, the cell building, the Bishop's House<\/a>, the bell “Annunciation”. The Cathedral keeps sacred relics, icons of Our Lady of Vladimir, Smolensk, the Transfiguration of the Lord. The main part is made in the Baroque style.<\/p>\n

It is located on Bogoyavlenskaya Square, next to the Moscow<\/a> Bridge over the Kotorosl River.<\/p>\n

Yaroslavl Church of Elijah the Prophet<\/h2>\n

Bright green domes, an openwork bell tower, snow-white walls of the church located in the city center attract attention at first sight. The decision to build an Orthodox church, which became a masterpiece of temple architecture in Russia<\/a>, was taken by Yaroslav the Wise simultaneously with the laying of the city.<\/p>\n

The modern stone building has existed since 1650. The outer walls of the church are decorated with ornaments made of carved bricks, tiles, and polychrome painting.<\/p>\n

The interesting interior of the church consists of a huge number of plot images (brands), ornaments, everyday scenes. To create it, they invited the best masters who made frescoes, icon painters of that time.<\/p>\n

For the first time in the churches of the city, the dome is decorated with the image of the triune god, symbolizing the “Fatherland”, and not the Almighty. In the temple there are five beautiful iconostasis, prayer places of the king, the patriarch, brought from another church. The church is considered the pearl of the Yaroslavl school of architecture.<\/p>\n

The famous monument of the Christian faith is located on Sovetskaya Square, 7, in the city center<\/a>. Several streets in the form of rays begin next to the temple. You can come here on the city bus route number 99, coming from Yaroslavl Square – Glavny.<\/p>\n

You can visit the temple from 10 am to 6 pm daily, except Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Temple of St. Nicholas Wet<\/h2>\n

The ensemble of a typical township church includes a cold five-domed church and a warm one-domed church, built in the name of the icon of Our Lady of Tikhvin in 1686. The walls of the churches were decorated with polychrome tiles, openwork architraves, multi-colored ceramics. The south porch is the best preserved. There are no such decorations in any temple of the city.<\/p>\n

Local craftsmen worked on the interior design<\/a>, using interesting methods of gluing painting technique, known as Nikolo Mokrinskaya painting. A monument of applied decorative art is considered to be a forged porch grating made in the 17th century. The temple was opened after being handed over to believers in 1992. Now it hosts festive services.<\/p>\n

The temple is located at st. Tchaikovsky (former name Lyubimskaya), 1.<\/p>\n

Church of St. Andrew of Crete<\/h2>\n

The ancient temple, whose architecture harmoniously combines elements of the ancient Byzantine style with the innovations of the 20th century in the Art Nouveau style, was transfer<\/a>red to the Orthodox Church of Russia only in 2010. The restoration of the former grandeur of the temple is slow, many of its decorative elements have yet to be re-created. The walls of the huge bright hall of the temple in their original form were filled with copies of paintings by famous artists, for example, “The Baptism of Russia” by Vasnetsov.<\/p>\n

In the center of the hall there was a two-tier chandelier (not preserved), a three-tier iconostasis (not preserved). The barbaric robbery of the temple after its closure in 1923 destroyed the main values. Many valuable mosaics were painted over with black paint. Some of them have been restored. Methods for creating mosaic art have received a rebirth.<\/p>\n

Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary<\/h2>\n

Now, within the walls of the church, built in the simplified style of the Yaroslavl churches (there is no refectory, basement, the gallery is only on the western part), divine liturgies are performed, divine services are held. The single ensemble of the Church of the Annunciation includes two temples built at different times. The original was a cold wooden temple. Namely, it started the famous fire that destroyed most of Yaroslavl in 1658.<\/p>\n

The stone building of the temple was erected almost a century later. Inside the temple, the murals made under the guidance of famous masters Ignatiev, Fedorov are well preserved. In the beautiful five-domed church, towering over the Volga, prayers are held daily, and a Sunday school is open.<\/p>\n

For many churches of the 18th century, the church became a model of architecture.<\/p>\n

The church is located at st. 3rd Yakovlevskaya, 9.<\/p>\n

Church of the Epiphany<\/h2>\n

The current temple was built on the site of a wooden church of the 13th century in a new style of Moscow architecture for the city. Nine huge windows illuminate the pillarless interior of the temple, making its decoration solemn, festive, favorably illuminating the golden wall frescoes.<\/p>\n

The main plot of the wall paintings are scenes from the gospel life of Christ. The temple resembles a tower from Russian fairy tales, epics. The author of the creation of the frescoes, the beautiful carved iconostasis has not been definitely established.<\/p>\n

The hipped form of the bell tower, unusual ornaments made of polychrome tiles made the temple the main architectural value of the central square of the city. Among the church relics, the relics of many saints are kept in the temple.<\/p>\n

Now in the restored church, located on the street. Epiphany12, there are regular services.<\/p>\n

Yaroslavl Fedorovsky Cathedral<\/h2>\n

The current cathedral (services were held in it in difficult Soviet times) is the most important shrine of Orthodoxy, a magnificent monument of Russian architecture. After the return of the temple to the possession of the church, the Cathedral is also called the Church of the Fedorov Icon of the Mother of God.<\/p>\n

Its appearance is associated with interesting legends about the healing of Posadsky Pleshkov's illness. In 1683, the construction of the first building of the cathedral began.<\/p>\n

All the interior decoration of the temple (frescoes, icons, iconostasis) has been preserved in its original form. Of historical value are a large didactic icon depicting the Holy Trinity, the Royal Doors, an ancient silver ladle for consecration with water.<\/p>\n

The high-lying bulbs of the church, bright domes give it a special grandeur and grandeur. This is one of the favorite temples of the local population, numerous Russian pilgrims. Address<\/a>: Bolshaya Fedorovskaya street, 72.<\/p>\n

Church of the Transfiguration in the City<\/h2>\n

Or otherwise the Church of the Origin of the Honest Trees of the Cross of the Lord. The first church standing in the historical part of Yaroslavl, on the border of the Chopped City, was wooden. The stone cathedral appeared here in 1672.<\/p>\n

At first it was a variant of a cold church, but gradually new warm aisles with beautiful tented endings were built. Valuable shrines are stored in the church, for example, frescoes with the image of the All-Merciful Savior, particles of the relics of the Holy Pleasure. Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, called “Softener of Evil Hearts”.<\/p>\n

Icon of St. Seraphim of Sarov with a particle of his relics, kept in an interesting Ark on the altar of the temple. The image of “All Saints”, created to celebrate the millennium of the birth of Yaroslavl. It is the only one in the city. The church operates Sunday schools for adults and children. Worship services are held weekly. Located on Pochtovaya street, 3.<\/p>\n

Assumption Cathedral<\/h2>\n

A beautiful architectural monument in Russia is considered one of the most ancient stone cathedrals of Yaroslavl. It was founded in 1215 and consecrated in 1219. In its original form, the cathedral stood until the fire of 1501, which destroyed the temple. When parsing the ruins of the temple after the fire, the relics of the Yaroslavl princes who lived in the 13th century (Vasily and Konstantin Vsevolodovich) were discovered.<\/p>\n

Now it is the main relic of the restored cathedral. Divine services are held daily in the cathedral. Divine Liturgy is held twice on holidays<\/a> and Sundays. At 7:00 and 9:30 am.<\/p>\n

Located on Kotorosl embankment, 2.<\/p>\n

Vladimirskaya Church<\/h2>\n

One of the last monuments of the tent architecture of Russia, unfortunately almost abandoned, with an incomprehensible owner, only the cold part of the church has been preserved. In the center of the city, among the alleys of the Vlasyevsky Garden, which is located on the site of an old cemetery, in the 19th century there is the famous Bozhedomka Church.<\/p>\n

Its architecture, history<\/a> of appearance have features. The temple on the “wretched house” (the burial place of the homeless, nameless wanderers according to the ancient custom of paganism).<\/p>\n

Since 1771 (the church was built in 1678), a ban on poor houses began to operate, and burials began to be carried out in cemeteries outside the city. So the Church of the Vladimir Mother of God on Bozhedomka gradually ended up in the city center, on Svoboda Street.<\/p>\n

The peculiarities of the architecture of the church are that the main cube is made according to the principles of the cross-domed version. Three tents performed only a decorative role. The temple for the poor has never had a rich external, internal decoration.<\/p>\n

Church of the Ascension<\/h2>\n

The history of the construction of the temple is closely connected with the establishment of the Yaroslavl parish. There is a “Legend about the construction of the Ascension wooden church” in 1679 in the Baroque style on the road to Uglich.<\/p>\n

Now here is the main street of Yaroslavl. Since 2010, the buildings have been transferred to the Orthodox Church of Russia, restoration work has been carried out in them, including the complete restoration of the ancient domes of the church, open galleries.<\/p>\n

The new image of the church is created according to its appearance in the XVII century. The bell-shaped tents that appeared in the 19th century have not been restored. The frescoes of the Sretenskaya warm church (only the refectory remained), made in the 18th century, are well preserved and make up the unique interior decoration of the church. Church relics include silver crosses with the relics of saints, part of the stone of the Holy Sepulcher.<\/p>\n

Church of Demetrius of Thessalonica<\/h2>\n

The temple is considered an example of the two-pillar type of Yaroslavl architecture of the 17th century. The cold church was erected in honor of the Smolensk Icon of Our Lady Hodegetria on the site of an old wooden church.<\/p>\n

It had three limits in the name of the Great Martyrs Dmitry, the nine martyrs of Kizichesk. Thessalonica, George the Victorious. Initially, it was decorated with five domes. The warm temple in the name of the Praise of the Virgin had a two-tiered painted iconostasis (the interior of the temple disappeared) was erected in 1749.<\/p>\n

It is believed that the famous master Plekhanov was the author of the temple murals. The theme of the murals is based on the use of plot marks from the scenes of the Gospel, the life of the Virgin.<\/p>\n

The main images are considered to be the “Almighty”, located in the dome, the figures of eight prophets, located between the windows. Their choice, full-length execution symbolizes the universal greatness of the Russian Church. The elegant altar painting with the composition “Rejoices over you” is well preserved.<\/p>\n

Located on Bolshaya Oktyabrskaya (formerly Rozhdestvenskaya) street.<\/p>\n

Church of Ilyinsko-Tikhonovskaya<\/h2>\n

In the most ancient church of the city there are no divine services, no church hymns are heard. Only the solemn appearance of the building reminds that events that have become a legend took place in this place for a long time.<\/p>\n

Yaroslav the Wise ordered to build a church here in honor of St. Elijah the Prophet after the victory over a dire bear. The stone building grew in 1694. Attached chapel in the name of St. Tikhon the Wonderworker. Reflected in the name of the church. The “ruzhnoye” architectural structure (maintained at the expense of the treasury) has not yet been transferred to the jurisdiction of the church.<\/p>\n

Some restoration work was carried out in honor of the Millennium of Yaroslavl. Now in the stone one-domed church, the building houses the storerooms of the art museum<\/a>, workshops. But the temple, built in a neoclassical form, with an elegant staircase, a high single-domed dome, neat turrets (bell tower and sacristy) arouses admiration and curiosity. The church is located on the Volga embankment in the Kirovsky district of the city.<\/p>\n

Church of John Chrysostom<\/h2>\n

The most harmonious sight of Yaroslavl architecture was erected in such a way that the maximum beauty, the grandeur of the external decoration of the building made an unforgettable impression when approaching from the Volga.<\/p>\n

The magnificent temple of the small fishing village of Korovniki, erected in 1654, had the form of a four-pillar five-domed church, surrounded on three sides by an open gallery, ending in symmetrical, simple and graceful tent limits. They are dedicated to Princess Olga and the conception of John the Baptist.<\/p>\n

In the external decoration of the temple, a luxurious porch stands out, the window trim of the central apse, made of beautiful emerald tiles. It is considered one of the symbols of the city. The ornament of tiles against the background of unique brickwork gives the church a fabulous, elegant look. Located on st. Port embankment, 2.<\/p>\n

Holy Cross Church<\/h2>\n

Despite the fact that they tried to close this church several times, it still functions and a new 200 pood bell rises on it (one of the largest in the city), a porch has been added, the floor has been renovated, heating has been installed, and new wall paintings have been made.<\/p>\n

The appearance of the temple is associated with the onset of the terrible disaster of the Middle Ages – the plague. People were looking for any way to save their lives, including the help of God. At the highest point on the outskirts of the city (Poklonnaya Hill), the local clergy read prayers, asking for help. The trouble receded.<\/p>\n

In honor of the victory over the epidemic, a small chapel was built. Around it, the life of a settlement called Crosses was gradually born. A stone temple was built next to the wooden church (circa 1760).<\/p>\n

The main shrine in the form of a three-meter cross of Metropolitan Jonah with holy icons, with an old inscription, was transferred to a new temple, where it is now. After restoration, the relics of the saints were placed in the lower part of the cross. The location<\/a> of the church allows you to see the beautiful surroundings, the city of Yaroslavl.<\/p>\n

Church of St. Michael the Archangel<\/h2>\n

The first wooden building of the garrison church was built in 1215. The stone church in the name of the patron saint of the military Archangel Michael appeared in 1657. Many interior decorations of the church made of colored tiles and ancient frescoes perished during another fire.<\/p>\n

Thanks to restoration work, some of them have been restored. The surviving old icon of the Archangel Michael is of great value; it often participates in exhibitions of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since 1994, the church has become active, after giving it a look corresponding to the 17th century. Divine services are held in a warm church. Temple images of the Archangel Michael, Our Lady of Vladimir, Smolensk, the icon of Anthony the Great are valuable relics of the church.<\/p>\n

Church of Peter and Paul<\/h2>\n

The two-story stone church was built at the expense of the wealthy owner of the manufactory, I. M. Zatrapeznov. The family tomb used to be in this church. Thanks to the care of the parishioners, the tombstone has been restored, a religious procession is held annually around the former square occupied by the manufactory, and the patronal feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul is celebrated.<\/p>\n

Now this place is called Peter and Paul Park. In the 18th century, there were five interesting ponds with a specific purpose next to the church.<\/p>\n

The building of the church repeats the shape of the famous baroque cathedral of St. Petersburg. The sights<\/a> of the church are the ivory icon “The Resurrection of Christ with the Holidays” (a gift from Peter I to the Shabby), a silver cross with pearls and a particle of the relics of Anthony the Roman, considered the Miracle Worker of Novgorod. The church was decorated with bells and clocks.<\/p>\n

Now prayers are heard in the temple, divine services are being held.<\/p>\n

Church of the Nativity<\/h2>\n

In it, in the 1600s, the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, saved from the Nativity Convent, was kept. The snow-white ancient church resembles amazing stone lace, frozen over the Volga. It has been preserved in its original form.<\/p>\n

The architecture of the church used original architectural solutions. Many elements were first used in the church architecture of Russia. For example, the pillar-shaped bell tower of the church, reaching a height of about 40 m and ending with a tent top.<\/p>\n

Initially, there were 8 bells in the belfry of the church. Some of them were brought from Holland. The largest bell was sent to be melted down during the Soviet era. Historians say that the famous tiled tiles were first used in the decoration of this church.<\/p>\n

A temple-created inscription was laid out of them, perpetuating the names of the Nazaryevs, the metropolitan, and the tsar. You can read it now. Masters worked on the ensemble by order of two generations of famous Yaroslavl merchants. The complex structure of the temple is hidden behind a very beautiful exterior decoration.<\/p>\n

A visit to the church is included in many tourist routes. There are always believers in it. An interesting history of the church is connected with the theft of many ancient icons in 1989. All of them were sold in another country. Vladimir Roshchin (a collector from Saratov) purchased the stolen icons and returned them to the church.<\/p>\n
