Lovers of soaking up the sun can fully enjoy the beautiful beaches<\/a> and gentle waves of the Baltic Sea, go surfing or find other water activities. For those who prefer city<\/a> walks, Vilnius Old Town is at their service. Holidays<\/a> in Lithuania will appeal to many travelers. In this small country, modernity and antiquity are closely intertwined. There you can see beautiful landscapes, castle<\/a>s, many cafes serving national cuisine, temple<\/a>s and, of course, Vilnius museums.<\/p>\n

Palace<\/a> of the Radziwills<\/h2>\n

One of the most beautiful castle<\/a>s in the country, the Radziwill Palace, is located in the city<\/a>. This is a visiting card not only of the city, but also of the country. It was built in the late Renaissance style. Previously, there was a wooden palace in its place, but it was damaged during fires. In the middle of the 17th century it was rebuilt by the architect Jan Ulrich.<\/p>\n

In 1807 the building was transfer<\/a>red to the Humanitarian Society. Since that time, the building has been repaired many times, some parts have been completely destroyed, and new buildings were built in their place. To date, the northern and eastern buildings and the pavilion have been preserved from the palace ensemble. In 1984, the architect Evaldas Zulonas drew up a project for the rest<\/a>oration of the western pavilion, according to which it was completely rest<\/a>ored. In 1990, the building was restored, and after that a division of the Lithuanian Art Museum of the Radziwill Palace was placed there.<\/p>\n

It contains unique paintings by artists from Germany, Austria<\/a>, Russia, France<\/a>, Holland, Poland. In addition, there is an exposition dedicated to the Radziwill family. In 1913, its very first branch was opened. Relics of the Jews, privileges granted to Jews by local princes, letters were kept there. The building was destroyed during the Second World War, and rebuilding began in 1949. The collections that were previously stored there were scattered among various institutions, and it took great effort to collect them again.<\/p>\n

The institution fully resumed its work only in 1989. In addition to the valuables previously stored in the center, materials, documents, photo<\/a>graphs taken during the Holocaust, testimonies of miraculously surviving Jewish eyewitnesses are stored there. Also, there is an exposition dedicated to the Jewish life of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.<\/p>\n

It was founded back in 1855, on the initiative of Count Evstafy Tyszkiewicz, a zealous collector of antiquities and the study of antiquities. Anyone who loves history<\/a> and technology will like it. Its building is located opposite Gediminas Mountain, on the banks of the Viliya River. This place offers a magnificent view of the local landscape. For a long time, the building was abandoned, and only in 2003, the first exposition was opened here.<\/p>\n

It was dedicated to the centenary of the opening of the first power plant in the country. The exhibits presented in it tell about the history<\/a> of electricity. Since then, the institution has been replenished with new expositions. For children, there is a special excursion<\/a> to a real old power plant. They can become active participants in the process. Many parts of the station have been replaced with mock-ups to mimic a real workflow<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On one of the floors there is a collection of rare car<\/a>s and motorcycles. There are models of almost a century ago and copies of the 60-70s. In a separate exhibition hall, samples of items made in the workshops of the Middle Ages and the Soviet period are exhibited. Initially, it was a monastery with a church, built by order of the Lithuanian hetman Sapieha. The crypt of the temple was to be used as a family crypt. The best Lithuanian and Polish architects worked on the construction and decoration of the church. Under the monastery, Lev Sapieha gave one of his palaces. The temple was rebuilt several times.<\/p>\n

It has distinguishable features, both Gothic and Renaissance. Of interest is not only the building, but also the unique church items stored inside<\/a> it. Church services ceased to rule in the last century. In 1970, a museum was opened inside, where real masterpieces of church art are presented. Many items were made by famous Western European masters of the 18th and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n

Initially, immediately after construction, the Lower Castle was part of a complex that included the Lower Castle, the Cathedral<\/a>, palace services, utility rooms. The complex was erected at the foot of the Castle Hill. The construction of the castle began in the first half of the 14th century. And already in the middle of this century the palace became the residence of the Lithuanian prince.<\/p>\n

In the 16th century, the Great Palace was built, in which Lithuanian princes once lived. It was built in the Renaissance style. The palace complex was significantly damaged during the war with the Moscow state, and during the expansion of the city, in the 18th century, it was almost completely destroyed. The palace was recreated again only in 2002. Now, in the new castle there is a museum where historical artifacts are stored. Of the old complex, only the western tower remained.<\/p>\n

On its basis, a bell tower was erected, 57 m high with an observation deck for tour<\/a>ists. From there, a magnificent view of local attractions<\/a> and beautiful landscape opens up. The institution was visited by leaders from 15 countries<\/a> during its opening. There, various events often take place. It is noteworthy that it was in this palace that the opera was performed for the first time in Europe.<\/p>\n

The building of the old Arsenal was built on the ruins of an old defensive complex of the 14th century. From it, at the time of the construction of the new building, only walls and foundations remained from the old buildings. They were taken as a basis during the construction of the Arsenal. On the ground floor there are left-luggage offices, a bookstore, a multi-purpose hall and a cafe. The second consists of several rooms – a small exhibition hall, administration offices and a reading room. The last floor is occupied by a large exhibition hall. There is an open terrace on the roof of the building, and there is a square near the building itself. The institution often organizes exhibitions, cultural, artistic and educational events.<\/p>\n

Employees of the Moscow Region are engaged in the implementation of various creative projects in the capital. More than 100 contemporary artists collaborate with the organization. Through the efforts of the Moscow Region, a guide to the sculptures of Vilnius was prepared. This is the only travel<\/a>ing museum that moves around the country's schools. Lithuanian Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema<\/h2>\n

Its architecture preserved traces of several styles at once – Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism. The first Lithuanian private theater, owned by local magnates, found shelter here. For some time, the palace was empty, and then it was divided into apartments<\/a> and rented out. After the end of the Second World War, there was a back room of the capital's theater. The Radziwill mansion was completely restored only in 1996.<\/p>\n

Now, this luxurious mansion houses a museum of theater, music and cinematography. It houses unique artifacts that shed light on the development of cinema in the country. The exhibits were stored in the former capital of Lithuania – Kaunas during the war. Some of these artifacts were reassembled, but some were lost forever. The exposition consists of four parts. This unique collection contains tickets, scenery models, costumes, posters, play scripts. Of great interest is the collection of antique dolls, collected from all over the country, through the efforts of enthusiasts. Here you can collect paintings and even ancient musical instruments.<\/p>\n

Lithuanian Railway Museum<\/h2>\n

Each country has its own history<\/a> of railway development. The idea to create a place that would acquaint visitors with the life of railway workers appeared in 1966. Then the museum was opened. It contained a large photo archive demonstrating the everyday life of the railway employees of that time, models. The institution was closed for renovation in 2010. Now, the exposition occupies a space of 800 sq.m. It was divided into three separate zones.<\/p>\n

In the first one, various events are held, models of train<\/a>s are demonstrated. A children<\/a>‘s corner is organized for visitors with children<\/a>. There is another open-air exposition covering an area<\/a> of \u200b\u200babout 1 hectare. There are models of steam locomotives, electric locomotives, diesel locomotives, service equipment. Here you can see the first Soviet train “Sergo Ordzhonikidze”. This was exactly the first model of a special train that arrived in Germany in the post-war period (1945).<\/p>\n

Here you can see the first German locomotives of the TE-52 series. In these steam locomotives, everything was thought out to the smallest detail. Near the exhibits there is a retro board, used in the old days to announce the arrival or departure of trains. This line is rarely used. It was last opened in 2017 for commercial purposes – a fashion show and a design exhibition.<\/p>\n

Museum of Genocide Victims<\/h2>\n

In wartime, crimes against individual nations were commonplace. A few decades later, this is still reminiscent of the testimonies of eyewitnesses who miraculously survived at that time, archives of photo<\/a>graphs, and documents. The walls of the building managed to see many terrible crimes. The building was built in the 19th century. for the judiciary.<\/p>\n

Then, there was a recruiting office. A few years later, the Bolshevik prison of the revolutionary tribunal was located within these walls. The owners changed only in 1920. The building, after the partition of Lithuania, went to the courts of the Polish authorities. In 1940, this house belonged to the NKVD, and in wartime it was occupied by the GESTAPO. After the end of the war, for a long time, the premises were occupied by the KGB. Such a long history has made this building the most sinister in the history of this country.<\/p>\n

Expositions dedicated to the genocide are located in the basement. Many exhibits tell the history of the country in different periods of time. On the second floor, exhibits introduce visitors to the period of deportation of Lithuanians in 43-55, the activities of the KGB, and civil resistance. Here you can see samples of list<\/a>ening equipment. Nearby is a room that the KGB used as a prison.<\/p>\n

Art Museum<\/h2>\n

Founded in 1933 and consists of several branches. It exhibits many cultural and historical values. There you can see the works of both Lithuanian and foreign masters. The institution includes a branch of applied arts, the Gallery of the artist Pranas Dom\u0161aitis, museums of clocks and miniature arts.<\/p>\n

The following exhibits are exhibited in the first branch: tombs and shrines made by goldsmiths, woven belts, embroidered clothes, tapestries, porcelain from Sevres, Vienna<\/a>, Meissen, amber items, metal objects, furniture, Czech glass. The gallery fund is constantly replenished with new collections of local and foreign artists of Lithuanian origin. Parts of the interior of the palace are stored in the room. The next branch presents a collection of watches made at different times (from the 16th to the 20th century). Near the institution is a fragment of the park, which was here in the 19th century. In the branch of miniature arts, you can see fans from antiquity, beaded embroidery, purses, and elegant caskets. Nearby is the gallery of Pranas Dom\u0161aitis. It exhibits the works of artists, sculptors, graphic artists from Western Europe, more than 500 works by Pranas Dom\u0161aitis himself.<\/p>\n

House of the Signatories<\/h2>\n

House of Signatories in 1917-1918 belonged to the Council of Lithuania. It was there that the historic document on the restoration of Lithuania's independence was signed. The things of signatories who have become diplomats are stored there. The exposition is located in a separate room. The items stored there acquaint visitors with the beginning of the national revival in the 20th century. and the formation of the statehood of the country.<\/p>\n

In 1795, most of the country was ceded to the Russian Empire. There was no longer a country like Lithuania on the world maps. The country gained independence only during the occupation of the territory by Kaiser Germany. The central and most important exhibit is the historical material demonstrating the long way of Lithuanians to independence.<\/p>\n

The building is now classified as an architectural and cultural monument of the state. It was built in 1645. The owners of the house were constantly changing, and the building was being renovated. At first, the house consisted of two floors, but after the fires, during its restoration, another floor was added. In the 19th century, after restoration, the neo-Renaissance style began to be seen in the exterior of the house. The house is of great architectural value. On the main facade you can see beautiful sculptures in niches, busts of men.<\/p>\n

Toy Museum<\/h2>\n

The institution's expositions include many exhibits obtained by archaeologists, private collections of collectors and visitors donated. In this place, both children and adult visitors will find a lot of interesting<\/a> and informative for themselves. Of great interest are the toys of the Stone Age and the Middle Ages. Children can touch high-quality replicas of these items. There are different models of dolls, balls, board games of nobles. The exposition has a section that introduces visitors to children's toys and games of the 14th-18th centuries found on the territory of the country. Near most of the exhibits there are fragments of paintings by famous artists, which depict a toy in action. Amusements found on the territory of Lithuania can be seen in the works of Jan van Eyck, Bosch, Pieter Brueghel.<\/p>\n

In addition to old exhibits, there are samples of modern, high-tech entertainment<\/a>. There are collections of soldiers, dolls, slot machines from the 70s and 80s. Events are often held in a separate room (workshop) where employees of the institution introduce everyone to the history of wax, the first toys. All this is accompanied by a master class.<\/p>\n

Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum<\/h2>\n

Vytautas Kasiulis is a famous artist in Lithuania. His works are known far beyond the borders of the country. They adorn the galleries of the best museums<\/a> in the world. Many critics consider him one of the best representatives of modern art, belonging to the French school of painting. Over the entire life period, Kasiulis painted about 1,500 oil paintings, 50 lithographs, completed 950 works in pastel and 200 in gouache. All works are of great value to the entire world community.<\/p>\n

The gallery exhibits 950 paintings by the artist. All of them were written in a different period, which is displayed in a variety of colors, the nature of the plots. The peculiarity of the paintings is the brightness of the colors. They have it all – a riot of colors, interesting storylines, both real and completely fantastic. The institution has collected works from different periods of Kasiulis's life.<\/p>\n

In addition to paintings, the artist's personal belongings, donated to the fund by his widow, are stored here. It is located in a historical place – a neoclassical palace built at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to the gallery, the palace houses a library, an archive and meeting rooms for members of the society. In 2012, the building was reconstructed with funds from the European Regional Development Fund.<\/p>\n

Lithuanian Bank Money Museum<\/h2>\n

The exposition belongs to the Lithuanian state bank. The exhibits are located in five halls, on two floors. The exhibits exhibited there tell about the history of the origin of money in this country. It is difficult to find a better place than Zamkovaya Gora for the construction of a defensive complex. The mountain is surrounded on all sides by rivers. The first settlements on its territory appeared in the Neolithic period. Then, around the 11th-13th centuries, the first defensive structures were erected here and a wooden castle was built. A little later, the Upper Castle was erected in its place.<\/p>\n

When the Gediminas dynasty came to power, the Upper Castle became the main political center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The defensive complex included the Curve, Lower and Upper castles. He repeatedly repelled the attacks of the Teutonic Order. In 1419 the castle was destroyed by fire. It was restored, but stone and brick were already used for construction instead of wood. To date, only the Western Tower has remained from the complex of structures.<\/p>\n

The building is considered a valuable heritage of the country. The architecture is dominated by the Gothic style. The tower rises 142 meters above sea<\/a> level. It has the shape of an octagon and consists of three floors. The museum is housed in the tower. In it you can see models of Vilna castles, archaeological finds, knightly armor, and weapons. On the territory where the tower is located, there is still a preserved part of the walls of the Upper Castle.<\/p>\n

Science Museum of Vilnius University<\/h2>\n

Vilnius University has a very long history. Its founder was the Polish king Stefan Batory, in the 16th century. In the Republic of Lithuania, it is one of the main higher educational institutions in the country. It is not only of historical value. The institution consists of 13 buildings and 13 courtyards. It is noteworthy that during the visits of heads of foreign states to this country, the university is an obligatory place for a delegation to visit. Literary Museum of A.S. Pushkin<\/h2>\n

The institution is located in the former mansion of General Melnikov, who became famous in the wars of the early 19th century. This estate was inherited by the general's daughter, who, after the collapse of her previous marriage, moved to live in St. Petersburg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There, the woman met the younger offspring of the poet, and soon the couple got married. After the marriage, the newly-made spouses spent some time in Markuchai, then settled in the Mikhailovskoye family estate. They lived there for a little over 5 years. In 1899 the estate was sold to the treasury of the Academy of Sciences. So, the couple ended up in Markuchai again. The son of the great poet, Grigory Alexandrovich devoted the rest of his life to the study of the inheritance inherited from his father.<\/p>\n

At his disposal were the things of the poet's personal use, handwritten works, family heirlooms, and even drawings. After the death of Grigory Alexandrovich, his widow began to organize poetry evenings in the house, and was engaged in educational activities. Before her death, the mistress bequeathed her estate to the Vilnius authorities. After her death, in 1940, the literary museum of A.S. Pushkin. It has three different expositions – one is dedicated to the life of the poet, the second consists of his personal belongings, and the third includes drawings.<\/p>\n

The attention of visitors is presented to the original collection of ridiculous and unnecessary things, called “Absurd”. They appeared almost simultaneously with useful things and objects. The second collection of the interactive exhibition immerses everyone in a world where inventions are shown, without which it is impossible to imagine the life of a modern person.<\/p>\n

During the tours<\/a>, it is allowed to take pictures, and the guides will tell stories about a particular subject, art. Every year, the collections are replenished with new exhibits. A friendly team is working on new artistic solutions, resea<\/a>rching the world of science and art. In the institution, each visitor will find something interesting and informative for himself, and modern technologies will help in this process.<\/p>\n

Amber Museum<\/h2>\n

The Baltic Sea gave the country a unique treasure – amber. This transparent, sun-colored stone has been prized for centuries. There is evidence that it was delivered by sea to the court of the Roman emperors. The building is a house, small in size, which was built around the 17th century. At first, it was the mansion of a wealthy Lithuanian merchant.<\/p>\n

When the Baroque style came into fashion, the house was slightly rebuilt. The fa\u00e7ade retains Gothic elements, although it has more Baroque details. Guides at the institution introduce visitors to the interesting legends<\/a> of this region, fairy tales related to amber, funny stories. The largest stone that was found on the territory of the country weighs almost 4 kg. There are stones here, with various inclusions – a prehistoric mosquito, various flies, a grasshopper's foot.<\/p>\n

Another collection consists of rare colored stones. There are more than 500 stones found by archaeologists during excavations. In addition to amber, the vaults of the cellar, with ancient masonry, and a medieval kiln designed for firing ceramic tiles are of value. On the top floor there is a shop selling souvenirs<\/a> made of natural amber. Each product is provided with a quality certificate that protects it from fakes.<\/p>\n

Included in the architectural complex of Vilnius University. It is a unique architectural monument of the 17th-18th centuries. It was originally a merchant's house. In the 19th century, Zhytsky became the owner of the building. At that time, Adam Mickiewicz lived in an apartment on the ground floor. It was here that the great poet worked on the famous poem “Grazhina”. This house also housed the Society of Friends of Science, and in 1911, one of its members bought the building. The mansion was restored, and a museum was organized in the rooms where Mickiewicz lived.<\/p>\n

In the late 30s of the 20th century, the building was transferred to the ownership of the Department of Classical Philology of Stefan Batory University. The complex worked until the beginning of the Second World War. When the occupation began, some of the exhibits were irretrievably lost. In 1955, the memorial apartment of Mickiewicz was restored and opened to visitors. The opening was timed to coincide with the centenary of the death of the poet. The exposition consists of some of Mickiewicz's personal belongings, a chair on which he liked to sit, a table and about 200 other exhibits – manuscripts, medals, lifetime first editions of his works, letters of Philomaths, sculptures and portraits.<\/p>\n

Samuel Buck Museum<\/h2>\n

Samuel Bak was born in 1933 in Vilnius. Artistic talent began to manifest itself in him from early childhood. His very first works saw the light in the Vilnius ghetto when he was only 9 years old. After the execution of his father, the boy and his mother found shelter in the Benedictine monastery. One of the nuns, Maria Mikulskaya, helped them in this.<\/p>\n

In 1944 the Soviets released the Jews in the camps. After that, Samuel and his mother, along with other Jews, left the border of the Soviet Union. Until 1948 they were in Germany<\/a>, in camps for the displaced. During this period, the painting “Mother and Son” was painted. In Munich<\/a>, he had the opportunity to study painting. A little later, the family was repatriated to Israel, where the young artist graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Arts.<\/p>\n

The Samuel Bak Museum is the only place that is entirely dedicated to the work of this great contemporary artist. The exhibition of works was opened in 2017. The artist himself, who currently lives in the USA, also arrived at this event. The complex received 54 works. After the opening of the gallery, Buck held a master class in painting. In the near future, it is planned to create another space for expositions.<\/p>\n

Vilnius Art Gallery<\/h2>\n

Surprise<\/a> visitors with a collection of works spanning over 450 years. The gallery is located in the ancient estate of the Chodkiewicz family, one of the oldest aristocratic families in Europe. Among the family members there were many military leaders, cultural figures, diplomats, scientists.<\/p>\n

Their estates and palaces could be found in many European countries. The Vilnius residence was considered the most beautiful in terms of architecture. It was built in the style of late classicism. Today, an art gallery is located within the walls of the residence. The exhibits were paintings by Lithuanian artists. The exposition occupies four floors of the palace. In many rooms, stucco molding decorating the ceilings, expensive artistic parquet, famous masters, and a tiled stove have been preserved intact. All paintings exhibited in the halls are divided into themes.<\/p>\n

Portraits of aristocrats are exhibited separately, landscapes and genre painting are located in a separate room. Many masterpieces of Lithuanian painting were scattered among the private collections of local nobles, and only recently have they been collected and placed in a gallery. Many of the paintings belong to masters who studied painting in Germany, Italy<\/a>, and carried out church orders.<\/p>\n

Artillery bastion of the city defensive wall<\/h2>\n

The artillery bastion was built by the Lithuanian prince Alexander, after numerous requests from the townspeople. In 1506, the construction of the wall was completely finished. The need for construction was dictated by a large number of external enemies and the threat of invasion.<\/p>\n

In the 17th century, the wall was reinforced with a bastei, which was a fortification made of brick and earth. In fact, it was a fortification, consisting of an observation tower, an artillery unit and tunnels. During the war with the Moscow principality<\/a>, the bastei was badly damaged. In the 19th century, it was covered with earth, and the area around it was turned into a city dump. The artillery bastion was rebuilt by the Germans during the First World War.<\/p>\n

The vaults were strengthened, the floor was concrete<\/a>d, ventilation was made. When the Second World War began, the structure served as a bomb shelter and armory. The walls were completely reconstructed and rebuilt in 1965-1970. An exposition of weapons and parts of fortifications were placed in the premises of the bastion. There are exhibits from ancient times to the 18th century. The complex now consists of the original tower built in the 16th century, a wall, cannon rooms and a corridor connecting the buildings to each other.<\/p>\n
