The city, surrounded by 5 mountains and numerous legends, not in vain excited the imagination of Lermontov, who dedicated many poetic and prose lines to him. An unusually picturesque, diverse city, Pyatigorsk<\/a>, captivates with its unique beauty everyone who comes here for the first time. The famous lake “Proval”, Mount Mashuk, the park “Flower Garden”, the cave of Diana's Grotto are known all over the world. The city is not only a balneological resort, famous for its mineral waters, but also a recognized cultural and educational center of the Caucasus Mineral Waters. Pyatigorsk Museum<\/a> of Local Lore<\/h2>\n

The oldest institution in the North Caucasus (1903) embodied in its expositions a detailed history<\/a> of the region from ancient times to the present day. More than 134 thousand various exhibits are stored in its funds. The employees of this unique organization are true enthusiasts and professionals in their field. Thanks to their efforts, any visit here turns into an exciting “journey” through time. Changing exhibitions are regularly held here, there are 3 permanent exhibitions.<\/p>\n

The first floor is occupied by the expositions “Natural Features of the CMS” and “Pages of the History of Pyatigorye”. There are rich collections of minerals, mountain models, samples of minerals, relief maps, etc. The finds of paleontologists are of great interest: fragments of the skeleton of the Southern Elephant, skulls of fossil animals, stuffed animals of rare birds. Many archaeological artifacts from different eras are on display: household items, unique examples of firearms and cold steel, historical documents, maps, and photo<\/a>graphs.<\/p>\n

The expositions on the 2nd floor reflect the exciting history of V.O.V., the participation of Pyatigorsk citizens (from privates to Heroes of the USSR) in the great victory. Personal items, uniforms of fighters, photos<\/a>, awards, weapons, historical documents are exhibited here. Exhibitions on the 3rd floor, opened in 2017, introduce people who have played a significant role in the formation of funds. There is a Hall of fine arts in the institution, in which interchangeable art exhibitions are organized.<\/p>\n

Museum of Stone Antiquities<\/h2>\n

He started his new life quite recently, in 2018. The amazing open-air storage facility, which became the first of its kind in the North Caucasus and Europe, was opened in 1850 and existed until 1881. At the initiative of the local history museum, they decided to revive it, choosing a place on Mount Goryachaya next to the Chinese arbor, on a round platform. The grand opening of the implemented project took place on June 22, 2018. Stone artifacts – witnesses of the distant past, personify the common historical past of all the peoples of the North Caucasus.<\/p>\n

All objects placed here have cognitive and educational value, being a link between the past and the future. Interesting information about the exhibits can be read on the stands installed around the circumference of the site. The areal circle is divided into thematic sectors. Each of them is dedicated to the history of the development of a certain nationality of the region from the Stone Age to the present. The center of the circle is crowned with a complete copy of the Etok monument – the statue of Duka-Bek, the original of which is in Moscow<\/a>. Presumably, the time of the creation of the monument with a height of 2 m. 65 cm refers to the 4th-5th century. n. e.<\/p>\n

Along the radii around the circle, there are unique stone rarities, originals and copies. There are a dolmen slab (2nd millennium BC), a stone stupa (1st millennium BC), a prehistoric statue of a Scythian warrior (6-5th century BC), “Tree of Life” – artifacts of the 4th-3rd millennium BC. e.<\/p>\n

Insect Museum<\/h2>\n

The fascinating entomological world opens up before the eyes of visitors in expositions dedicated to insects. The organizer of an unusual institution was the entomologist Tikhonov V.V., who collected a large collection of butterflies, representatives of the local fauna. He bought exotic winged individuals in Thailand, Costa Rica, replenishing the collection with tropical butterflies. Since its opening in 1995, its collections include more than 1,000 different insects.<\/p>\n

Among the exhibits there are dried specimens that are over 100 years old. In addition to live and dry insects, small amphibians are represented here. The collection of dry butterflies is especially rich: marigolds, nosy, pigeons, danaids, birdwings, etc. delight the eye with their kaleidoscopic coloring. Due to the creation of a careful attitude, all copies are in excellent condition. There is a hall of living butterflies here, where a special microclimate is organized, with a certain temperature, air humidity and appropriate vegetation. Scorpions are represented in the expositions, among which the imperial scorpion lives – the largest representative of this species. In the collection of arachnids there is a tarantula<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those who wish will be able to take a picture with a thin-tailed snake, taking it in their hands. Here in the distance you can see the king snake and other reptiles. Interesting individuals of lizards, distinguished by the most unexpected colors. For example, the blue-tongued skink that lives in Australia is amazing. Visiting an entomological institution is a pleasure for everyone.<\/p>\n

Museum of the History of the Pyatigorsk Militia-Police<\/h2>\n

Opened in 2001, the cultural and historical institution, dedicated to the guardians of law and order, is very popular among Pyatigorsk residents and guests of the city. A detailed history of the formation of the Pyatigorsk Internal Affairs Directorate is reflected in permanent and changing exhibitions. Excursions<\/a> for schoolchildren of the city are regularly held here, meetings with police veterans are organized. The documents, presented in chronological order, introduce the specific facts of the development of the organization.<\/p>\n

There is an opportunity to see the original decision of the first People's Commissar of Internal Affairs of Pyatigorsk, A. Rykov, on the creation of a workers' militia in the city. Photographic documents introduce the biography of the first chief Ivan Shukhovetsky. Among the exhibits are samples of police uniforms from different periods, various types of weapons. The first official motorcycle is presented here, which invariably arouses the interest of visitors. The uniform tunic of senior lieutenant Taplinsky, who became the prototype of Mikhalkov's “Uncle Styopa”, attracts attention.<\/p>\n

The excitement is caused by a soldier's helmet riddled with bullets – evidence of the participation of policemen in the war. There are many photo reports here about the truly heroic everyday life of police officers who averted dangers. The museum is managed by a veteran of the Internal Affairs Directorate, an employee of the institution V. D. Sabelnikov, who personally conducts interesting excursions. At the entrance to the building of the institution there is a monument to the dead policemen – a VAZ patrol car on a metal pedestal.<\/p>\n

National Museum of Military Glory<\/h2>\n

The history of the historical and cultural institution began with the organization of Post No. 1 at the Fire of Eternal Glory in 1973. For 10 years, many expositions and exhibits have appeared at the headquarters of the Post, telling about the exploits of local residents. In 1983, the Museum of Military Glory of Post N 1 acquired the honorary status of the People's Museum. For 7 years, the institution was consigned to oblivion, the exhibits were transfer<\/a>red to the local history museum.<\/p>\n

But in 1997, veterans of the Great Patriotic War petitioned the City Duma for the revival of Post No. 1 and, accordingly, the National Museum of Military Glory. It was not only revived, but also made the center of the military-patriotic education of youth. The first 3 expositions with photos and photocopies were devoted to the history of the birth of Pyatigorsk, its revolutionary and military past. By the autumn of 2000, the floor space had increased significantly. An exposition “Chechen Cross” was organized on the 2nd floor of the building. In the next hall there was an exhibition “People's Education”.<\/p>\n

On the eve of the 30th anniversary of Post No. 1, a collection of items illustrating the history of the Yunarmiya posts was organized. Today, there is a uniform of the Yunarmiya members of the 70s, photographs, documents, badges, etc., there are 6 halls. 5 magnificent dioramas – authentic decorations of the institution demonstrate great military feats. There were sections dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the CMV, the 100th anniversary of the city tram, the 60th anniversary of the Victory. In 2011, an interactive tour<\/a> of the facilities was created here.<\/p>\n

Constantinogorsk fortress<\/h2>\n

On the site of the former garbage dump (8 hectares), through the efforts of the Terek Cossacks, a grandiose project is being carried out today – the restoration of the ancient Constantinogorsk fortress. On the basis of archival sources, the director of the local history museum S. Savenko developed a plan for the reconstruction of the historical site. Today, gazebos for recreation are equipped in the open air, two artificial lakes have been built, and strong dams have been poured.<\/p>\n

Along the perimeter, a 700-meter-long ditch was dug out of the same dimensions (4×5) as the former one. After filling the moat with water, carp are bred here. To date, the arrangement of the ethnographic estate, where pets are kept, has been completed. The local stable contains 10 horses, an equestrian club is organized, and horseback riding lessons are held. An obstacle course and a shooting range for military sports training of youth have been equipped.<\/p>\n

Currently, active work is underway to recreate the objects of the fortress. A watch tower, classrooms, a barracks, a canteen, an infirmary, workshops, a canteen, etc. are being erected. A wooden chapel from a Belarusian frame is being built in the center. The museum-fortress is served by 30 people. In the near future, the Constantinogorsk fortress will become a popular cultural and tourist attraction of the city.<\/p>\n

House<\/a> of General Verzilin<\/h2>\n

The last earthly refuge of Lermontov – Pyatigorsk – sacredly honors the memory of the great poet. There are many places here united in a museum-reserve and associated with the genius of Russia<\/a>n poetry. Memorial plaques dedicated to Lermontov can be seen on many city buildings. One of them is the House of General Verzilin, in which Martynov had a quarrel with the poet, which ended in the tragic death of the latter. Lermontov, who came to Pyatigorsk for medical treatment on the waters, visited the Verzilins' house as a guest.<\/p>\n

Martynov lodged in a small outbuilding next to the house, so their fateful meeting took place. After the war, they decided to turn the building into a memorial building, they overlaid the wooden walls with bricks, protecting them from fire. In the middle of the 20th century, the facade of the building was overhauled, and all rooms were reconstructed. Today, all rooms have their original appearance, which was during the life of the poet. The expositions occupy 8 halls.<\/p>\n

6 of them contain materials that acquaint visitors with the life and work of the poet. In the 7th hall there is a literary department, created in 1948 to study the work of Lermontov of the “Caucasian period”. The memorial living room is presented in the 8th hall, where Mikhail Yuryevich liked to visit. During his stay, dance evenings, disputes and conversations were held in it. It was here that one evening, wounded by the sharp joke of the poet, Martynov challenged him to a duel. All expositions of the House of Verzilin reflect in detail the huge creative and short life path of the greatest talent of Russian poetry and prose.<\/p>\n

Lermontov's house<\/h2>\n

At the sight of a small house under a reed roof, one recalls the lines from “A Hero of Our Time”, with which the story “Mary” begins. They describe the place where Pechorin rented an apartment. It was in such a house, on the high slope of Mashuk, that the poet himself rented a house. Today, this modest building houses the “Lermontov's House”, which is part of the museum-reserve. In 1841, Mikhail Yuryevich settled in it together with a friend, captain Stolypin.<\/p>\n

During the day, the poet was the leader of the “flying detachment” in attacks on the highlanders, and in the evening officer parties were held here, the soul of which was Lermontov. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, at an evening in the Verzilins' house on July 24, the poet, inviting the general's daughter to dance, uttered a prophetic phrase about the last waltz round in his life. In 1884, at the initiative of A. N. Ostrovsky, a memorial plaque was installed at the entrance to the house, and in 1912 the city administration bought the estate, and the collection of exhibits began. The Shan-Gireev family brought furniture from St<\/a>. Petersburg and handed over the poet's personal belongings.<\/p>\n

In 1973, a modest institution acquired the status of the State Museum-Reserve. The restorers worked hard to restore the original appearance of the house, inside they recreated the atmosphere of that era. Now the Literary Department of the reserve is located here. Picturesque lawns surround the last refuge of the disgraced poet, the walls are also whitewashed with lime, window shutters are preserved. The courtyard, where the genius of Russian poetry used to walk, is lined with stone slabs – love and respect for the memory of the wonderful son of Russia are felt in everything.<\/p>\n

Alyabiev House<\/h2>\n

For most people, Alyabyev is associated with 2 world-famous romances “The Nightingale” and “Evening Bells”. Coming to the Alyabiev House, located in the Lermontov Quarter, visitors will learn that the composer composed a huge number of musical works of various genres. Among them there are many romances written on the basis of Lermontov's work. It is no coincidence that the Alyabyev House is included in the Lermontov Reserve. After the Siberian exile, where the composer ended up on an unproven murder, he came to Pyatigorsk for treatment (1832).<\/p>\n

Having settled in the house of the late Major Karabutova, Alyabyev lived there for a little over a year. During this time, he wrote dozens of romances based on Lermontov's poems dedicated to the Caucasus. In 1997, the only Alyabyev memorial in our country was opened in a restored building. The local expositions reflect the facts of the composer's stay in the Caucasus and the reflection of this in his work.<\/p>\n

A separate exhibition is devoted to the works of Lermontov, captured in the music of Alyabyev. It presents authentic editions of musical notes of the Lermontov era, old lithographs with views of the capital of Russia. There is an author's painting by Lermontov the artist “Attack of the Life Hussars near Warsaw.<\/p>\n

House of V. F. Umanov<\/h2>\n

Another object of the Lermontov Reserve – the oldest building of Umanov's house – is evidence of the reverent attitude of Pyatigorsk residents to the memory of the poet. A one-story wooden building of typical architecture of the 19th century was transported by its owner to Pyatigorsk in 1823 from the city of Aleksandrov, Caucasian province. The heirs of the house rented it out for rented apartments<\/a> for many years.<\/p>\n

In the summer of 1841, Lermontov's colleague, hussar Arnoldi, rented one of the apartments here. The poet came to visit him on several occasions. This fact served as the basis for opening a memorial institution dedicated to the talented creator in Umanov's house in 1974. The house was transferred to the balance of the State Museum Reserve. The tenants were resettled, the building was returned to the appearance of 1841, as it was during the stay of Mikhail Yuryevich.<\/p>\n

The wooden building with a 4-pitched metal roof rises on a stone plinth, in which utility rooms are equipped. A beautifully designed open gallery, bounded on 3 sides by chiseled railings, adorns the southern facade of the house. A high stone staircase leads to the main entrance, located from the side of the courtyard. Exhibition exposition “M. Y. Lermontov in Fine Art” is located on the 2nd floor.<\/p>\n
