Strictly speaking, the state of Malta is not one island, but seven. True, only three of them are inhabited: Malta itself, Gozo (Gozo) and Comino. Those for whom the name “Malta” pleases the ear were not at all mistaken in their premonition. This word is translated from ancient Greek as “sweet honey.” However, it was not only the Greeks who ruled here. The advantageous geographical position of the island attracted everyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The strongest influence on the modern state was exerted by the knights of the Catholic Order of St. John, who by hook or by crook defended the possession from the encroachments of enemies throughout the 16th-18th centuries. How to get<\/a> to Malta<\/strong>? <\/h2>\n

Here the advice is laconic – by plane. Low-cost airlines, Wizz air and Ryanair fly from different points in Europe to Malta. Particularly popular and relatively inexpensive options are flights from Polish Warsaw and Katowice or Lithuanian Vilnius<\/a>. You can find tickets for 120-150 euros round trip. Cheap plane tickets<\/a> can be purchased through aggregators.<\/p>\n

For aerophobes (those who fear for safety during a flight, we advise you to read the reassuring article<\/a>) the only option left is to swim to the island from neighboring Sicily. You can find options departing every day on the Direct Ferries<\/a> website. The cost of a five-hour trip (round-trip ticket) starts from 150 euros.<\/p>\n

Public transport<\/a> in Malta<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The main, but not the most reliable assistant when traveling around the cities of Malta is the bus. This type of transport is very developed on the main island. But not very punctual.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The best option would be to buy a Tallinja card immediately at the airport upon<\/a> arrival. There are also options for purchasing the corresponding transport card at the central bus station in Valletta (capital) or online on the official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Malta is not as small as it may seem, so you will have to travel a lot by bus. Take the Tallinja Explore Flex day card, by far the most profitable option – only 6 euros per day of travel. Single tickets cost 2.5 euros.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Located in the very heart of Valletta and with its views destined to get into the very heart of every tourist, the Upper Barrakka Gardens, oddly enough, are good not for their vegetation, but for the beautiful views opening onto the Grand Harbor of Malta and the “Three Cities” on its other side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Until 1800, when the French came to the island with their democracy and ideas of equality, the gardens were open only to knights. In the shade of the trees they rested from military labors. And they kept one eye on what was happening in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The knights rested not far from their place of permanent service. The Upper Barrakka Gardens are the highest point of the Bastion of Saints Peter<\/a> and Paul<\/strong>, built in 1560. What remained of it were not only the walls, but also a cannon battery, ready to greet guests of the island with their shots and drive away enemies.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Fort Saint Elmo, Valletta<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Witness to one of the most glorious pages of the long military history of Malta is the stellar (in form and in status) Fort Saint Elmo. It was he who shielded the island with his powerful bastions during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During the four-month siege, 800 people from the fort's garrison resisted the Turkish armada of thousands. The fort was eventually captured, only nine of its defenders survived. But time was gained for comrades in other fortifications.<\/p>\n

Our descent into the abyss of antiquity continues. Two of Malta's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites date back to ancient times. For example, the hypogeum (underground temple) of Hal-Saflieni<\/strong>, according to rough estimates, began to function in 4000 BC.<\/p>\n

Strictly speaking, Khal-Saflieni is not a temple, but a huge underground tomb. The ancients carved new passages and grottoes into the rocks to “settle” their dead there. In total, up to seven thousand people could be buried here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

And the temples themselves, megalithic structures five thousand years old, are on the surface. Even in this, Malta is similar to Great Britain – like its own Stonehenge<\/a>! By the way, we also wrote<\/a> about legendary historical routes.<\/p>\n

The most impressive of the megalithic structures is the Hajar Qim complex<\/strong>. This monument is considered one of the most ancient religious buildings on the planet. Scientists suggest that fertility rituals and animal sacrifices were performed here.<\/p>\n

Malta can be proud not only of its history, but also of its nature. The coast of the island is a motley collection of steep cliffs and sandy beaches. So from the most active recreation, mountaineering, to the most passive, lying on a sun lounger, it is often enough to take a couple of steps.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Blue Grotto is considered one of Malta's best natural attractions. Plus, it's located close to Hajar Qim, so it's a productive combination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Grotto, like a shy girl, is not ready to fully show herself to strangers. To take in its charms, you need to book a boat tour inside. Its cost from Tartu<\/a> starts from 18 euros.
