Compared to neighboring countries in the Middle East, Oman is not in high demand for mass visits, but now tourism<\/a> is gaining momentum. The state generally opened up to the world only 40 years ago. The main difference from other Arab places is that there is a high standard of living here, the local residents “did not bend” to the modern way of life and were able to preserve their identity.<\/p>\n If you want to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the East without pretentious luxury, constant parties, or giant skyscrapers, then you should definitely visit Oman. All buildings in the country are still built in<\/a> traditional Arabic style, and most locals wear national clothes – dishdash.<\/p>\n Young people can get bored: there are no nightclubs and practically little entertainment in the Sultanate. The most common type of recreation is scuba diving. Oman ranks second after Egypt in fishing and diving<\/a>.<\/p>\n Despite the fact that Oman is an Islamic state, an unmarried girl can easily visit this country alone. Drinking alcohol in public places is prohibited, but hotels sell alcohol<\/a>. There is no such option in stores: tourists cannot buy alcoholic drinks. You can bring your own, but only 1 liter per adult<\/a>.<\/p>\n Regarding restrictions, there are no restrictions on clothing. Men in Muscat can wear shorts without any problems, and girls can wear miniskirts and off-the-shoulder T-shirts. But topless sunbathing is prohibited, as is taking photographs<\/a> of local residents without their permission.<\/p>\n Geographically, Oman is located at the intersection of the trade routes of the West and the East, which means that their cuisine is varied and taken “a little from everywhere.” The main dishes are meat or fish. Mostly locals eat beef, goat, lamb or camel meat, using rice as a side dish. Among the sweets in this country, they prefer dates and baklava, which are served with very strong coffee with cardamom.<\/p>\n The first place to visit is the Sultan Qaboos Mosque. This is the main mosque in the country, and indeed the only one open to tourists. It took 10 years to build, and the construction took over 300 thousand tons of sandstone.<\/p>\n The area is 416 thousand square meters. Inside the mosque there is a carpet that was woven by 600 needlewomen in two shifts for four years. And its weight is 21 tons, and its size is 70 by 60 meters. It is mandatory to visit the mosque in fully covered clothing, even for men.<\/p>\n It is important to know that when entering historical cities<\/a> you should carefully<\/a> look at the signs. At the entrance they warn that you should not wear revealing clothing in this area. It is worth covering your shoulders and wearing skirts or shorts below the knees.<\/p>\n Since ancient times, Oman has been known as a supplier of incense – an aromatic resin. To this day, plantations for the extraction of the most popular incense remain there. In the early 80s, by decree of the Sultan, the production of elite perfumes based on Omani incense was opened.<\/p>\n Then in 1983 the famous Arab perfume house Amouage appeared. Now you can visit the factory on a guided tour<\/a>. You can also buy perfume there, but their products are far from cheap: the price for a 30 ml bottle reaches 600 rials ($1,560).<\/p>\n You should not miss the opportunity to visit the Royal Opera House in Muscat, which opened its doors in 2011. At that time it was the only opera house in the Arabian Peninsula.
