The country includes several islands, but I will focus on only one – the island of the same name, Mauritius. The place is not budgetary, but extremely attractive. Seaside resorts, clear azure lagoons, nature reserves, parks, ancient colonial buildings and amazing phenomena that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Definitely worth the money. So how do you plan your trip?

You can order a selection of tours to Mauritius or go there yourself. The first option is preferable if you need a good rest, and the second option if you want adventure and see as much as possible. You can combine beach nirvana with excursions in both cases, only the proportions change.

The official language is English, so there shouldn't be any problems. Travelers from different countries can come to the country for a month without a visa. To do this, you only need a passport, although sometimes they may require a return ticket or confirmation of a hotel reservation.

Beach holidays on the island of Mauritius

The warmest and most popular coast is the northwestern one. Although you can have a great rest anywhere. Almost the entire coastline of Mauritius at all 5 resorts is covered with the whitest pleasant sand. The Indian Ocean is pleasant and calm, protected by a wall of coral reefs.

However, it is not always possible to do without special shoes. There are a lot of sea urchins somewhere, and if you step on one of them, your vacation will be significantly spoiled. Everything is fine with hotels in the country, this applies to everything: rooms, territory and service. Tours to Mauritius offer luxury holidays. All kinds of marine activities are at your service: from diving to wind surfing.

Preparing for your trip to Mauritius

If you book a tour to the island of Mauritius, experts will advise you on everything, don’t worry, although you should still be prepared for the unexpected.

Despite the fact that tap water is filtered everywhere, it is better to drink bottled water. In good hotels this will not be a problem.

The local cuisine may be unusually spicy for you, so bring a first aid kit and stomach remedies.

Never break off corals or collect them, don’t even buy them if offered – it’s illegal and you can get into trouble with local law.

Always bargain with sellers.

Grab a couple of adapters. In Mauritius, the British type has three-pin sockets.

Take the fumigator into the outlet. The island has high humidity, which means there will be a lot of mosquitoes.

I already mentioned sea urchins, so it makes sense to get special shoes – beach or coral slippers.

Be sure to buy health insurance, and preferably an extended one.

Experienced travelers also advise taking some national sweets with them, then all bargaining or resolving any issues with the locals will go much easier. If they helped you, give them a chocolate bar. It seems like a small thing, but there are a lot of bonuses.

Sights of Mauritius

When compared to other popular destinations, it may seem that there is nothing to see on the island of Mauritius, although this is absolutely not the case. Yes, it is affected by the fact that the place was uninhabited until the 16th century, then Europeans began to develop the island. Therefore, almost all the attractions are natural, although there are also plenty of architectural wonders and museums.

Seven-colored sands of Chamarel

A unique, world-famous place, a natural phenomenon. Seven-colored sands are several sand dunes near the village of the same name. The trick is that this is not sand at all, but grains of basalt that ended up on the surface of the earth due to volcanic activity and later oxidized. Different colors are obtained due to differences in the chemical oxidation of different trace elements. Iron gives warm shades, aluminum gives cold shades, and everything is combined in different proportions.

It is also surprising that the “grains of sand” have an unusual property: they never mix, even if you decide to mix them yourself – they will soon still be separated by color. That’s why souvenirs made from glass bottles with local “sand” are so popular. You can grab one for yourself too.

There is an explanation that this is due to volcanic rocks, which have been cooling for centuries as external temperatures fluctuate. But a reliable interpretation confirmed by scientists still does not exist. Walking on the hills is prohibited; there are special paths and viewing platforms for this purpose.

Tamarin Falls

Seven raging water streams. Their height is 300 meters, so they are justifiably included in the list of the highest waterfalls on the planet. You can get to them from the city of Curepipe – also a rather interesting place, worthy of a visit. From the city you will need to get to the village of Henrietta, and then go either to the observation deck or on an excursion with a local guide. From the observation deck, alas, only one cascade is visible; if you want more, go on a hike.

Underwater waterfall

I don’t know about you, but waterfalls fascinate me, so I can write about them endlessly. Especially something as unique as this one. Although if you're being picky, it's not a waterfall at all, but an optical illusion. The underwater waterfall off the Le Morne Peninsula can only be seen from above. The illusion is created by cascades of sand washed away by currents and the ribbed landscape of the bottom.

No matter how much you probably want to save money, you can see this amazing optical illusion only by paying for a group flight on a helicopter or seaplane, at least 350 euros per person, or by climbing to the top of the mountain, if you are an extreme sports enthusiast. But I am sure that if you have already planned a trip to such an expensive country, then it is definitely worth budgeting for the cost of visiting such a unique miracle of nature.

Botanical Garden of Pamplemousses

One of the oldest gardens in the world. It was once founded by a French botanist to grow spices. Now the botanical garden occupies 25 hectares, almost the size of 18 football fields, and contains more than 1,500 plants on its territory. The aromas there are indescribable, as if you were visiting a perfume production facility, but it’s so beautiful.

La Vanille Nature Reserve

The reserve is also called “Crocodile Park”. All because of a farm where hundreds of alligators live. If you come on Wednesday or Saturday, you can catch an unusual spectacle – feeding crocodiles. Or just try them yourself at a local restaurant. I doubt you've ever tried crocodile meat.

If you're not into toothy things, you'll probably like turtles – another local pride. You can feed them, pet them, look at them up close and walk around their enclosure. Among the available species, I will note elephant turtles. They are huge, the size of the shell reaches 2 meters, and the weight is 400 kg. And they live for 150-170 years.

Unfortunately, this species is in danger of extinction, although zoologists around the world are actively fighting this. Elephant tortoises are also called Galapagos tortoises, but those who live in the Mauritius reserve were brought from the Seychelles. They will even show you small turtles – get ready to hold back tears of tenderness (or not!).

In the reserve you can also see foxes, iguanas, deer, and lemurs (you don’t even need to go to neighboring Madagascar, although this is a popular “collection of places” on cruises). And even to see the extinct Dodo bird, it’s a pity that only in the museum at the reserve.

God Shiva statue

The island is home to more than 60% Indians, all due to the country's colonial past. Indian culture is visible everywhere in Mauritius. In 2007, a giant statue of the god Shiva, 33 meters high, was erected near Lake Grand Bassin, and the place became popular not only among travelers, but also among pilgrims.

Nearby is a temple complex dedicated to Shiva – the largest of all religious buildings in the country. Sacred place. Hindu rituals and various cultural festivals regularly take place there.

What else to see?

You can stop by Fort Adelaide in Port Louis and get acquainted with the history of Mauritius, take a photo next to the colorful church with a scarlet roof against the backdrop of the sea – the Notre-Dame Oxillatris chapel, go to Cape Gris-Gris, taste local rum at the factory for its production, walk through the museum of illusions and even see a monument to Lenin in the middle of the Indian Ocean. All of the above is just a small part of the luxurious island. Therefore, don’t be afraid to get bored, book tours to Mauritius and go on a trip – more than one photo album will be enough for adventure.

Planning a holiday to Mauritius?
