This cathedral, by the way, claimed to become the largest in Italy, surpassing St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome, but the Pope did not allow this plan to come true. Because of his intervention, the façade of the church remained unfinished. Inside is the oldest organ in Italy, made in the 15th century. Giovanni Domenico Cassini drew a meridian on the floor of the basilica, marked the signs of the zodiac in different parts of it, and on the roof there is a hole through which a ray of sun falls, indicating the month of the year.

The Church of St. Petronius was built in the 14th century, but it came into the possession of the church only about a hundred years ago. Cassa Risparmio Palace

Bologna is called the city of arches. There are almost 40 kilometers of covered galleries that date back to the Middle Ages. But not so that people can move around the streets, hiding from the rain and sun – although this is really convenient. But because with the growth of Bologna, the need arose to expand the living space – additional rooms were equipped above the columns, which made it possible to preserve the roadway. In the city, by the way, there are no arcades below 2 meters 66 centimeters – thanks to this, riders on horses could move freely along the corridors.

The galleries are very different in their decoration: somewhere they are wooden, somewhere with lacy stucco, and somewhere with strange graffiti. The longest arcade leads to the sanctuary of Madonna di San Luca, located on a hill – its length is almost 4 kilometers. On the map I marked the most beautiful corridors in the city center.

J. The Two Towers (Le due Torri)

There were about a hundred similar skyscrapers in Bologna in the Middle Ages, and about a dozen have survived to this day. This is how in the old days local residents measured their level of income. The towers, which became the symbol of the city, were built by two of the richest families – Asinelli and Garisenda. True, the technologies during their construction were not followed and the high-rise buildings were lopsided. One of them – Garisenda – had to be shortened back in the 15th century from 60 meters to the current 48. It is now closed to tourists. But the neighboring one, Asinelli, 97 meters high, can be climbed by climbing almost 500 steps of a wooden spiral staircase. The top of the tower is tilted by 2.2 meters – to save it from falling, the building is constantly being restored. To be honest, I didn’t dare to climb Asinelli. If you did this, tell us about your impressions in the comments. They say that the observation deck of the “leaning” tower offers a great view of the city.

What is a must-try in Bologna?

“Fat, red, learned” – this is how Dante described the city.
