For a traveler, there is no more difficult task than creating a complete route<\/a> around Rome<\/a> with only a few days to explore it. You can live in the Eternal City for years and constantly discover something new. All its secrets are beyond the control of even the locals. And, nevertheless, sometimes the villainous fate simply does not give us a choice, measuring out pitiful crumbs of time to explore such an attractive city. We are compiling a guide to Rome<\/a> for two days, so that, having imbued with its atmosphere and beauty, you know exactly what you can return here for. How to get around Rome<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Here my advice is as simple as possible – walk. Use public transport<\/a> only when absolutely necessary. Firstly, because when you walk with two of you, you will see more. Neither guides nor maps include all the delights of Rome. And an ordinary house, which turns out to be five hundred years old, can pierce your heart with Cupid\u2019s arrow.<\/p>\n

Secondly, transport will not save your time, but rather waste it. The Italians themselves joke about his unreliability. In the Eternal City, buses<\/a> and trams are also always late.<\/p>\n

If we are talking about long distances, then, of course, you will have to use transport. In this case, I advise you to purchase a travel ticket for one, two or three days (Roma 24\/48\/72 ore). A 48-hour ticket will cost 12.5 euros. A one-time trip costs one and a half euros. Tickets are sold in vending machines at the entrance to the metro, at train stations, and newsstands.<\/p>\n

Day 1<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We will start our route from Rome's main station, Termini. Not only trains arrive there, but also most bus transfers<\/a> from<\/a> Rome airports.<\/p>\n

Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In Rome, every aristocrat sought to save his soul after a sinful life by erecting a temple at his own expense. I'm not sure if this was considered atonement, but tourists<\/a> will appreciate such spiritual impulses.<\/p>\n

\"Route<\/a><\/p>\n

So the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore became the gratitude of the patrician John to the Virgin Mary for the promise to give him a long-awaited child. In a dream, the Mother of God commanded John to build a church in the place where he saw snow (and this in the middle of a hot summer!) The next day, snow was actually found on Esquiline Hill. And according to legend, the plan of the temple was drawn right on it. Since then, every year on August 5, the basilica celebrates the snow miracle – the church is filled with white rose petals.<\/p>\n

This basilica is valuable not only for its antiquity, but it was built in the 4th century. But also because it is included in the list of “papal basilicas,” that is, the four highest-ranking churches of Catholicism.<\/p>\n

Lateran Basilica<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Another basilica, of the “highest” papal level. And one of the oldest churches of the Eternal City, born of stone and marble at the very beginning of the 4th century.<\/p>\n

The temple is part of the Lateran Palace, which was given to the church by its main benefactor among the Roman emperors, Constantine the Great. The palace was the residence of the supreme pontiffs for a thousand years, until the 14th century. Throughout history, he witnessed five ecumenical councils, the greatest events in the Christian world.<\/p>\n

In the area of \u200b\u200bthe “Holy Mysteries” of the temple there is a board that was part of the table of the Last Supper of Christ with the Apostles. You can see it along with other church interiors for free.<\/a><\/p>\n

Coliseum<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Aka the Flavian Circus. It is also the most recognizable Roman landmark. Endless admiration of him can only be interrupted by the realization of the fact of countless lives given here by gladiators for the amusement of the public. Not to mention the animals: according to estimates, about a million animals have died in the arena over the entire period.<\/p>\n

\"Rome\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The grandiose structure (translated from Latin as Colosseus – huge) was erected by order of Emperor Flavius \u200b\u200bVespasian. by 80 AD. The building accommodated up to 87 thousand spectators.<\/p>\n

After the delight had subsided, those who found themselves under the walls of the Flavian Circus had the first question: where did the huge piece of the outer wall go? In the 14th century, Rome was rocked by a powerful earthquake<\/a> that collapsed part of the Colosseum. Well, according to the medieval zealous tradition, the locals decided that it was not good for the good to go to waste. And they began to dismantle parts of the Colosseum to build palaces.<\/p>\n

A visit to the Colosseum will cost 18 euros. The ticket also includes a visit to the nearby Forum. Make sure to purchase your ticket online in advance. In the summer, places are taken away within a week, but you won\u2019t be able to just come and knock on the gate. Or you can take ready-made excursions in Rome<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Roman forum<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It's just a market. On which Roman gossips washed the bones of the patricians for centuries. And the patricians were doing what the aristocrats loved – talking about politics.<\/p>\n

From an architectural point of view, the ruins of the Forum are interesting because they represent a kaleidoscope of eras. Not just adjacent, but layered one on top of the other. Next to the pagan temple of Saturn stands a Christian church. And at the same time, in the middle of both sanctuaries, the Romans held trials and even executed criminals. And then they erected triumphal arches for their emperors. This is the whole spirit of Rome: the sublime holy and the base earthly are always nearby.<\/p>\n

\"Route<\/a><\/p>\n

Most of the Forum's buildings date back to the pagan times of the early Roman Republic. This is the cradle of the future ancient metropolis. The names indicate how old the buildings here are: the Temple of the Dioscuri, the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Venus. The oldest of them date back to the 5th century BC.<\/p>\n

Trajan's Column<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Rome in history is known primarily as a machine for conquest. And among the emperor-commanders, one of the most famous was Trajan. Under him, the empire reached its maximum size, stretching from Mesopotamia to Britain.<\/p>\n

The 38-meter-tall Column of Trajan was to perpetuate the memory of the emperor-commander. In a modern manner, the column can be called a collection of comic books in stone: by some miracle, images of 2,662 figures and 155 war scenes fit on it.<\/p>\n

\"Rome\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Trajan himself was toppled from the top of the column. In the 16th century he was replaced by Apostle Peter. Inside the building there is a staircase with which you can climb to the observation deck.<\/p>\n

Vittoriano and Capitol<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A mere baby compared to the ancient sights of Rome. But, nevertheless, one of the brightest images of the capital of Italy. Vittoriano is a whole complex of monuments and buildings designed to perpetuate the memory of Victor Emmanuel II, the unifying king of Italy in 1861. The event, known to Italians as the Risorgimento (Renaissance), marks the restoration of historical honor.<\/p>\n

\"Rome\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Vittoriano is located on the Capitoline, the most famous of the seven hills of Rome, where the Italian capital was born. Somewhere on the spurs of this hill, the Capitoline wolf nursed two abandoned children, Romulus and Remus. The grown brothers then founded one of the greatest cities in history.<\/p>\n

The sculpture of a she-wolf, known to us from school, is in the Capitoline Museum. By the way, this is the very first public museum<\/a> in the world, open to the public back in the 15th century. The times are not the same anymore. And now for a visit to the museum and the opportunity to see the wolf-nurse you will have to pay 16 euros.<\/p>\n

Pantheon<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nowadays you will have to fork out money for a visit to the Pantheon. From July, a visit to the Temple of All Gods will cost 5 euros.<\/p>\n

The ancient Romans were pragmatists. Not knowing which deity was more useful, they worshiped them all little by little. Their relationship with the gods was piecework-bonus: help – get a sacrifice. The Pantheon, erected in 128 AD, reflected this religious multi-vectorism.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the iconic Roman building is not a temple in the literal sense of the word. It is also the sanctuary of emperors, who, according to beliefs, had divine roots.<\/p>\n

The mystical interior of the Pantheon completely gives tourists goosebumps with its single eye gaping in the ceiling. The hole (oculus) was made exactly in such a way that the sun would “spend” autumn and winter in the upper hemisphere of the building<\/a>, and after the spring equinox the sun\u2019s ray would pass through the doorway. Thus, the structure acquired the symbolic meaning of the axis of the world.<\/p>\n
