And South Africa turned out to be the most lenient towards drivers.

The study looked at six different indicators, including blood alcohol limits, speed limits, cell phone use while driving and seat belt requirements.

Norway was the strictest country on the list, with an index of 7.09 out of 10. The country has a low blood alcohol limit of 0.02 BAC (blood alcohol concentration). Also lower speed limits on city streets and rural roads: 30 km/h in the city, and 80 km/h outside the city. And mandatory use of seat belts.

France was second on the list (5.94/10). Largely thanks to the strictest regulations due to mobile phones. Drivers are prohibited from using them even in hands-free mode.

Third place was shared by Colombia and Denmark (5.84/10). The lower highway speed limit in Colombia is 100 km/h, and the minimum blood alcohol level is 0.02 BAC. Seat belts are mandatory, but not strictly enforced.

But in Denmark, the driver can use the speakerphone, but on the condition that it is built into the car system. Phone holders that allow hands-free calling are not permitted.

South Africa finished last on the list with a score of 3.13/10. This is largely due to higher speed limits on motorways and on city and country roads, despite the low BAC limits.

Country rating:

Norway

France

Colombia

Denmark

Mexico

New Zealand

Australia

Germany

Canada

Italy

Great Britain

Brazil

Hungary

Spain

Chile

USA

South Africa

Are you planning to rent a car abroad?
