Despite the communist past, in Estonia the main winter family holiday is Christmas, and the New Year is celebrated in the company of friends. Unlike Western Europeans, Estonians prefer to give gifts and have a lavish dinner on the first day – Christmas Eve on December 24th. The holiday period lasts three days.<\/p>\n

This weekend, families head out into the countryside and spend time locally. In the old days, people often told fortunes. For example<\/a>, they predicted the weather for the next year using stars and frost. It was also customary to leave the fire in the fireplace all night. Probably as a sign of sun worship. It was believed that both good and evil forces ran amuck on these nights. Departed ancestors also visited the house, so some of the dishes for them were left on the table overnight. How do modern Estonians celebrate Christmas?<\/p>\n

Preparation<\/h2>\n

Advent Sunday is a great day to put up a Christmas tree. As in many other European countries, you can buy both artificial and real wood here. Since Estonia is a country of forests – they occupy approximately<\/a> 52% of the country – about 10 thousand Christmas trees are brought from there. RMK, or the state forest management center, has even created an app<\/a> with a map to help you find trees that, when cut down, do not harm the environment. Tallinn residents sled down the hill on the Singing Field. A whole winter park is opened there for children. And the ski trail is located in the Pirita area – a very picturesque route<\/a> running through the forest.<\/p>\n
