It is also the only remaining duchy in the world; its namesake capital is the city of Luxembourg. Everything there looks so stylish and majestic that you want to travel around the city not in sneakers and jeans, but in a ballgown and heels.

Both the city and the country confirm the meaning of the word “dwarf”; the territory is small, so a day or two is enough for the trip. Allow more time only if you are in the mood for relaxation, and not for a quick sightseeing. Despite the small area, there are also plenty of resorts and spa hotels there.

One of the disadvantages of the country is its high cost. On the plus side, all public transport is free, even for tourists. By the way, we previously named 10 cities with the best public transport systems in the world.

Luxembourg may be small, but it is still rich in beauty: pastoral bright houses in the mountains, cobbled streets, ancient temples, eco-trails. The capital alone is worth something, let’s talk about it. Where to start getting to know the city?

Upper town

The historical center of the capital is an excellent free observation deck. The center is located on a rocky hill between river crossings. It offers a stunning panoramic postcard view of the Lower Town, where the main attractions of Luxembourg are located among the medieval streets and squares.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg

A majestic cathedral combining Renaissance and late Gothic architecture. Colorful and bright stained glass windows, marble columns with Arabic script, and the atypical roof of the cathedral will definitely attract your attention.

Inside there are two magnificent organs, the music of which gives goosebumps. The icon of the Mother of God “Comforter of the Sorrowful” is also kept there. She is believed to protect the city. The lion crypts contain the remains of members of the ducal family.

St. Michael's Church

The oldest church in Luxembourg, 17th century, Baroque-Roman style. This is the only building in the city untouched during the French Revolution.

There is a legend that the French left three lily flowers inside – a symbol of royal power of that time. Flowers can still be seen above the entrance to the temple. The interior itself is not so pompous, the bright details are stained glass windows and chandeliers.

Casemates

On top of the cliff in the 17th century there was a Luxembourg fortress. Inside the rock, long labyrinths of military casemates were built – 23 kilometers of tunnels. Now the casemates are shorter and are used only as a tourist site. Somewhere there is even an exit to the surface of a rock at a height – another natural observation deck, the views of the Lower Town and the Speech Gorge are fantastic.

Boulevard de la Corniche

This is a promenade that stretches along the rock, on which, in general, the entire Upper City was built. When you go down, don't forget to look up. The boulevard looks amazing from below too. It is even called the most beautiful “balcony in Europe”. Previously, there were stairs on the steepest cliffs; they were removed during the demolition of the fortress walls.

Lower city

The Grund quarter, which is called the “Lower City,” is located on the river bank under a rock. This used to be a crafts district and is very picturesque. The proximity to the water adds some kind of romance; it seems that the houses grow straight out of the water. This is an expensive quarter, there are even several Michelin-starred restaurants there. But I still recommend starting your acquaintance with Luxembourg from the upper city, and not rushing to immediately go down. Although this can be done either on foot or by elevator along the rock. And as an argument, the photo below.

Palace of the Grand Dukes

It was originally a town hall, built in the 16th century after a fire that destroyed almost the entire Upper Town. Then it was a mansion with different owners, until in the 19th century the palace became the official residence of the Duke. Now monarchs confer there, meetings and receptions take place, diplomats come, delegations stay.

The entire culture of Luxembourg is also a peculiar mixture of neighboring cultures, including architecture. Even the Palace is made in different styles: partly Flemish, partly French, in the Renaissance.

Tourists are only allowed inside the most luxurious interiors when the Duke's family is out of town.

Adolf Bridge

The bridge connects the Upper and Lower towns and is considered a symbol of the capital and the main historical landmark. This is also a popular viewing point. The bridge was named after Grand Duke Adolf, who reigned between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Neumünster Abbey

Located in the Lower Town. Whatever functions the abbey performed: there were barracks, a police station and even a prison. In 2004, the complex was modified a little, a Cultural Center was opened there, where now you can see exhibitions, listen to concerts, take part in a master class and communicate with the artists living there.

Philharmonic

Its full name is the Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte Concert Hall. Modern construction from 2005, but still worthy of your attention. The building is very impressive and stylish.

Panoramic elevator

The Pfaffenthal quarter has a stylish high-speed glass elevator that connects the quarter itself with the city center. The 70-meter elevator and the bridge at its top can also be used as an observation deck: you will have a cool view of the coastal neighborhoods, there are more than 20 of them in total.

Fortress “Three Acorns”

The complex of three towers is part of a fort built to defend Luxembourg in the 18th century. But these, unfortunately, are only the remains of a once monumental structure. Most of the fortress was destroyed due to the Treaty of London, which determined the neutral status of the country. Although many things have been almost completely reconstructed. Now the fortress is open to tourists, there are several museums nearby.

In general, you can really imagine the spirit of the Middle Ages in the city, everything is so authentic. And even if everything developed under the influence of different cultures, for me Luxembourg is absolutely unique. It is not like any other city, except for some details. Rich history, high standard of living, postcard views – these are some advantages. Even though the city is small, I would love to return there.

The sights of Luxembourg can be explored in a couple of days, but it will still be a trip full of events and impressions. If you have enough time, also take a look at the Museum of Modern Art – even from the outside the building is beautiful and stylish. You might also be interested in the natural history museum – it contains a dinosaur skeleton. There is an interesting museum of buses and trams, numerous galleries and even an American cemetery.

And it makes sense to travel around the country itself, at least to see some fortresses, national parks and Luxembourg Switzerland.

Planning a trip to Luxembourg?
