And sometimes, having emigrated somewhere, you begin to miss your usual dishes. The same thing happened to me. When I moved to Brazil, I realized that Brazilians had never even heard of many of the dishes I loved so much. Now I’ll tell you in more detail what food combinations and products shock the inhabitants of exotic Brazil.

And in the first place on this list, of course, are our familiar dairy products. Cheeses, sour cream, kefir, cottage cheese – you won’t find all this on supermarket shelves. And all because instead of our popular cheesecakes for breakfast, Brazilians will prefer something floury. Cheeses will be replaced with sugary sweet chocolates. Pancakes will be prepared with milk instead of kefir, and they don’t need sour cream at all. But don't despair right away.

If you still want to cook something familiar from dairy products, you can always find a replacement. Replace cottage cheese with ricotta, and sour cream with coalhada – a natural dairy product, which is obtained by fermenting milk. And in one of the stores I even noticed a bottle of kefir, although 500 ml of the drink cost $3.5.

You may ask, how can you eat soup without sour cream? So, the soup will take second place on our list. Soup, as we usually understand it, is very rare in Brazil. I can’t even believe that somewhere on our earth they don’t eat soup. Brazilians prefer mashed potatoes rather than soup. Their dish is very thick in consistency. And, of course, you will either have to forget about the usual borscht, sorrel soup or cold soup, or cook it yourself.

The third place of unknown products on Brazilian soil is herring. Our favorite “herring under a fur coat” can be found in restaurants specializing in the cuisine, but be prepared for salmon instead of herring. Perhaps someone will even like this combination, but for me, this is not at all the same. After all, salmon adds sweetness to the salad, while we are accustomed to a saltier version. Despite the fact that the ocean is just a stone's throw away, the fish here is prepared either baked or grilled. No one knows about such a method as smoking. In this connection, smoked mackerel, pink salmon and other types can be added to the list of products far from Brazil.

We deservedly put buckwheat and pearl barley in fourth place. Yes, yes, it would seem that such simple porridges, which we can eat as a side dish almost every day, are absolutely unknown to Brazilians. In Brazil, unlike many other countries, it is almost impossible to find a grocery store. In this connection, the longing for buckwheat and barley intensifies. Also, there is no millet and semolina, but there is plenty of rice and beans. There are peas here, however, they are green.

5 best Brazilian dishes you'll definitely love

Lots of fish, but also sweets: the most unusual Scandinavian dishes

Polish national dishes worth trying

The most popular street food dishes in Hong Kong

Black bread will take fifth place on our list. Although, it’s hard to say that the loaf here is as tasty as ours. Most supermarkets sell white toast bread, which can have a shelf life of up to several months! Instead of black, you can only find grain or multigrain here. However, Brazilians love to eat baguettes. They are sold almost everywhere and come in several types.

Due to the fact that there is no brown bread in Brazil, there are, accordingly, no crackers here. Brazilians don’t even make our favorite snacks from white bread. They would rather eat their cheese bread (pão de queijo) instead.

Sixth place is dried fish and squid. Probably, each of us loves to indulge in cold beer with goodies at least once during the summer after a hot day. In Brazil, where the intoxicating drink flows like a river, people like to enjoy local empanadas. During cooking, they are fried in oil or fat. The filling can be absolutely anything: meat, seafood, ham and cheese, or vegetables. But Brazilians don’t think twice about dried fish or squid.

Seventh place will be taken by our favorite sweets: marshmallows, marshmallows and halva. Almost every family has one of these delicacies for tea. Here, in the country of sweet tooths, we have never heard of such incredible desserts.

By the way, despite the amount of cocoa beans in the country, the chocolate here looks more like our cheapest bar than something of high quality. It tastes sickly sweet and, in my opinion, absolutely unpleasant. In Brazil, it is better to buy chocolates from world brands that we know, which, by the way, are not cheap here. The simplest small Milka bar without adding nuts will cost $3.5.

Condensed milk should be placed separately on the eighth line. Despite the existence of an analogue to our condensed milk, which is called doce de leite, the taste, in my opinion, is completely different. Firstly, the local product is much more liquid. When preparing doce de leice, fresh milk is boiled with sugar until it thickens slightly and acquires a caramel color. Secondly, local condensed milk is sickly sweet. Thirdly, it does not come in white.

Drinks take ninth place. Namely: kvass and mineral water. Despite the huge quantity and wide selection of sodas, in Brazil there is no such popular mineral water. Instead of these wonderful drinks, locals simply love to drink coconut water. To me, it's absolutely tasteless. But Brazilians buy it by the liter.

In tenth place are meat products such as cervelat and sausages. In Brazil, in any supermarket you will come across a huge number of products from various types of meat: sausages, burger patties, fillets, but among all the variety there will not be cervelat. There are sausages, but their choice is very small, and the prices are steep. Even in large stores there will only be one type of really tasty product, and the price for 4 pieces will be $5.

Despite the absence of many of our usual products, lovers of fresh fruits and vegetables will especially like it in Brazil. From the choice of which, sometimes, one’s eyes run wide. There are also all conditions for proper and balanced nutrition. And you definitely won’t feel any shortage of anything here.

Want to discover the unique flavors of Brazil?
