“The City of a Hundred Spires”, “The Stone Dream”, “The Lady of the Czech Republic” – all these flattering names are given to the capital of the Czech Republic – Prague<\/a>. Since Soviet times, it has been coveted by tourists<\/a> from the USSR. To be there meant to be practically in the “West”.<\/p>\n

Now the Czech Republic is incomparably more accessible. And we can see with our own eyes that our parents dreamed of this country for a reason. Rich history<\/a> and attractive modernity have created a world-class tourist center. For now, let's talk about<\/a> history: which ancient monuments of Prague should be included in the route.<\/p>\n

Why Prague<\/a>? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

It is a mistake to think that dreams of Prague are cherished only by Eastern European tourists. At the level of genetic memory, those aspiring to the Czech Republic close the gestalt of their parents. The capital of the Czech Republic attracts not only millions of Western Europeans with its beauty, but its fame has also spread across the Atlantic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2000, Prague was the first city in Central Europe to receive the title of EU Capital of Culture. The historical center of the city is included in the UNESCO<\/a> World Cultural Heritage List. Those tired of the “concrete jungle” will be treated to an impressive hilly panorama. Well, for those who want to feel the unique spirit of the city, I advise you to get lost in the medieval streets and answer the question for yourself: is the old city really imbued with mysticism? And it\u2019s not for nothing that alchemists chose Prague for their experiments hundreds<\/a> of years ago.<\/p>\n

\"Stone<\/a><\/p>\n

Prague Castle<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This largest castle complex in the world is a national symbol of the entire Czech Republic. Throughout its more than thousand-year history, Prague Castle was the residence of Czech princes, kings, and then presidents of the republic. During the time of Charles IV, the city even became the residence of the Holy Roman<\/a> Emperor. In order to emphasize the new status, the roofs of the castle towers were covered with gold plates. According to one version, this extravagance gave rise to the name “Golden Prague”. According to another, Prague owes its name to the irrepressible alchemists who tried to turn mercury into gold.<\/p>\n

\"Prague<\/a><\/p>\n

It is worth remembering that visiting Prague Castle is paid: an adult ticket will cost 250 Czech crowns ($12). The ticket allows you to visit most of the attractions within the complex. Here are some of them.<\/p>\n

St. Vitus Cathedral<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If Prague Castle is the national pride of the Czech Republic, then the Cathedral of St. Vitus, Wenceslas and Vojt\u011bch is the spiritual symbol of the Czech people. Many Czech kings and archbishops are buried here.<\/p>\n

And St. Vitus Cathedral is one of the main European long-term construction projects. Its construction, which began in 1344, dragged on until 1929. The Czechs used 600 years of construction wisely and built a pearl of European Gothic architecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the winter season, the cathedral receives guests from 9 to 16 hours (on Sundays from 12 to 16), in the summer from 10 to 18 (Sundays from 12 to 17). Detailed practical information here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Old Royal Palace<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The second most popular place where tourists usually flock when they get to Prague Castle is the old royal palace. From the 10th to the 16th centuries it served as the residence of princes and kings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The most famous part of the palace is the Vladislav Hall, named after King Vladislav II Jagiellon (yes, a relative of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania). And the most famous part of the hall itself is the unique vaults in the shape of lilies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Vladislavsky<\/a><\/p>\n

Vladislavsky Hall is called the largest ceremonial room in Europe. Thousands of banquets and even knightly tournaments<\/a> took place here. It was designed in such a way that even a mounted knight could climb up the stairs and ride through the arches.<\/p>\n

Church of St. George<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is the second oldest church in Prague, founded around 920, and a rare monument of Romanesque architecture<\/a>. The remains of the first Czech martyr, Princess Lyudmila, are kept in the church.<\/p>\n

The plan of the architects who erected the temple is curious. On both sides there are white, 41-meter towers. The wide one is called Adam, and the narrow one, inclined by 40 cm, is called Eve.<\/p>\n

Art Gallery<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At one time, the collection of paintings in Prague Castle was one of the richest in Europe. It owes its appearance to Emperor Rudolf II. At the time of the benefactor's death, the gallery consisted of 3,000 exhibits.<\/p>\n

Centuries and vandals have not spared the masterpieces. Some of them disappeared without a trace, others were taken to other countries. But the Czechs are actively restoring the art collection, in which today you can see Titian, Rubens, Cranach, Brandl.<\/p>\n

To visit the gallery, a general ticket to the city is not enough. You need to buy a separate one, costing 200 CZK ($10).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Golden Lane<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Some will compare the Golden Lane of Prague Castle to an ethnographic museum. And someone with a doll city. Both are right. This ancient street of Prague consists of dwarf two-story houses, which are home to either souvenir sellers or small exhibitions demonstrating the life of Czechs from different eras.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lifehack. After 18:00 the houses on the street are closed, there is practically no trade. But you can go freely without buying a ticket to Prague Castle. If you already have one on hand, then the street is included in the excursion<\/a> program.<\/p>\n

What else to see in Prague Castle?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Weather permitting, visit the City Gardens<\/strong>, home to the Renaissance Singing Fountain.<\/p>\n

\"Prague<\/a><\/p>\n

Romance will be dispelled by a visit to Daliborka<\/strong>, an 18th century prison. Inside there is a museum<\/a> with instruments of torture. Daliborka is adjacent to Golden Street.<\/p>\n

The list of city palaces does not end with the old royal one. The Ro\u017eemberk Palace, the New Royal Palace<\/strong> and the only private Lobkowice Palace<\/strong> will delight the eye.<\/p>\n

Old Town Square<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We go to another repository of ancient monuments. The image of this square has been progressively created since the 12th century. Therefore, the buildings<\/a> that frame it form an open-air museum of eras. The Town Hall will tell us with all its appearance about the essence of Gothic, the Church of St. Nicholas will initiate us into the mysteries of Baroque, and the Kinski Palace will present rare Rococo. Let's look at each of them in more detail.<\/p>\n

Town Hall<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Town halls in the Middle Ages were sacred objects for any self-respecting city. After all, this is a symbol of his freedom, the meeting place of the city magistrate (as they say, the ancient city executive committee).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Old<\/a><\/p>\n

The first mention of the Old Town Hall dates back to 1338. The restless magistrate clearly gravitated towards perfectionism and was constantly adding something to her. The result is a whole town hall complex, which does not harm the aesthetics at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From January to March, the town hall is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. In other months from 9 to 21. A visit is not cheap – 300 CZK ($14). But the ticket includes a climb to the observation tower.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
