It is the longest running science fiction series in the world. It has been broadcast on the BBC since 1963.

Over the course of several dozen seasons, almost all famous and not so famous towns in Great Britain appeared on the screen. It was in this country that most of the filming took place. Most often, the actors settled in the capital of Wales – Cardiff, and in London. By the way, it is in Cardiff that the plot of the series “Torchwood”, a spin-off of “Doctor Who”, unfolds.

Some iconic places appeared in the frame more than once as both themselves and completely different geographical points. Let's take a walk through the most recognizable and important ones!

Southerndown Beach, Wales

Ladies and gentlemen, get your handkerchiefs and soothing drops ready – let's start with the most heartbreaking part. The scene of Rose Tyler's farewell to the Doctor from the last 13th episode of season 2, “Judgment Day,” seemed to break the heart of every fan. In the story, the characters meet in Bad Wolf Bay in Norway. In reality, filming took place at Southerndown Beach in Dunraven Bay.

The steep gray cliffs and large stones scattered along the shore are easily recognizable at any time of the year. The beach itself is popular with tourists. There are some great rock pools here. They can be explored at low tide. And there are many fossils preserved in the rocks.

The same place appeared again in episode 13 of season 4, “Journey’s End,” still in the same role as the Norwegian bay. It was also the surface of an alien planet in episodes 4 and 5 of season 5, “The Time of Angels” and “Flesh and Stone,” and the engine room of the ark ship from episode 2 of season 7, “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.”

St Paul's Church, Cardiff, Wales

Another episode that made fans shed a tear was “Father’s Day” (season 1, episode 8). In it, Rose travels back in time with the Doctor to be with her father at the moment of his death. All events took place on the territory of the church and on the street next to it.

The entire episode was filmed in Cardiff. The main action took place in St. Paul's Church. The first stone of the building ‘s foundation was laid in 1889. And already on February 5, 1890 the church opened to visitors. Now part of the temple belongs to a housing association. The other one has undergone renovations, but the appearance is still easily recognizable.

Trewan Manor in Digenstowe, Wales and Craig y Nos Castle in Swansea Valley, Wales

In episode 2 of season 2, “Tooth and Claw,” the Doctor and Rose accidentally (got the wrong date while driving a time machine, it happens!) end up in Scotland in 1879. They meet Queen Victoria. Then they spend the night together at Torchwood Manor (yes, yes, this is not an accident). And then everything is in the best traditions of the series – secrets of the past, evil aliens and an ingenious rescue plan.

Several different buildings acted as the estate. Exterior footage was filmed at Craig y Nose Castle in the Swansea Valley, built between 1841 and 1843. This is a Scottish country house in parkland on the banks of the River Tawe on the edge of the Black Mountain. Now there is a hotel in it.

Where was the seventh installment of Mission: Impossible filmed?

Reboot point: five-day London itinerary

A walk into the past: London's most colorful pubs

From Dover Castle to the New Forest: a journey through the south of England

But the inside shots were filmed at the Trewen mansion. His next companion, Martha Jones, in Episode 2 of Season 3, “The Shakespeare Code,” was lucky enough to end up in London in 1599 and meet William Shakespeare himself. Traditional villains in the form of aliens pretending to be witches brought the heroes to the stage of the most famous British theater, the Globe.

The original building, built with money from a troupe of actors to which the famous playwright belonged, was destroyed by fire on June 29, 1613. The building was restored in June 1614, but it did not last long – only until 1642.

The filming of “Doctor Who” took place in the third building, recreated according to descriptions and the remains of the foundation found during excavations. The Globus Theater reopened in 1997 and still hosts performances and exhibitions.

St Fagans National History Museum, Cardiff, Wales and Treberfydd Llangasty Manor, Brecon, Wales

The real test for Martha Jones was a trip to 1913. It happened in episodes 8 and 9 of season 3, “Human Nature” and ” Family of Blood.” In the story, the Doctor imprisoned his essence and memories in a watch. Because of this, he temporarily became an ordinary man named John Smith. He worked as a teacher at a private boarding school, and Martha worked as a maid here.

Most of the episode was filmed at St Fagans National History Museum, which opened back in 1948. Here, in the open air, there are typical Welsh houses, shops and pubs.

The school itself was the Victorian Gothic mansion of Treberfydd Llangasty. It was built between 1847 and 1850 south of Lake Llangors in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The building has belonged to the same family since its construction to the present day, but is open to the public.

Church of St John the Baptist, Cardiff, Wales

In episode zero of season 3, “Runaway Bride,” another companion of the Doctor, Donna Noble, appears for the first time. A girl disappears in the middle of her wedding and materializes in the TARDIS. After some bickering, they work together to prevent another attempt by evil aliens to take over the Earth.

The night chase was filmed on St Mary's Street in Cardiff city center – the metal fence is easily identifiable. And for the wedding scenes they chose the Church of St. John the Baptist. This is the only pre-medieval church (dating from the 12th century!) in Cardiff city centre.

Llansannor Court in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales

In episode 7 of season 4, “The Unicorn and the Wasp,” Donna and the Doctor attend a typical English tea party in December 1926. There they meet Agatha Christie on the eve of her mysterious disappearance. Together with the writer, they investigate a complicated crime.

The entire plot of the series takes place in one mansion and on its territory. Filming took place at Llansannor Court in the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales. The house dates back to the 16th century but has undergone many changes over the subsequent hundreds of years. This rather simple two-story building made of gray stone fits perfectly into the plot.

Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales

In Episode 1 of Season 5, “The Eleventh Hour,” viewers met the Doctor’s new companion, Amelie Pond. For a significant part of the episode, the girl runs with him around her hometown of Lindworth. In reality, filming took place in Llandaff.

Fans will easily recognize the neat houses with stone fences in the center of the settlement, lawns and local monuments. Particular attention will be drawn to the cathedral, over which, in the story, an alien ship hovers. This is Llandaff Cathedral, a magnificent example of British Gothic architecture and one of the oldest Christian sites in Britain. The building was erected in the 12th century; since then it has been destroyed and reconstructed more than once.

By the way, he appeared once again in the season – in episode 10 “Vincent and the Doctor”. Where it acted as a church in Auvers from a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.

National Museum Cardiff

This place can rightfully be called the record holder for the number of appearances in the series. The halls and corridors of the National Museum of Cardiff appeared with enviable consistency in different seasons. The reason is simple – endless exhibitions and staircases can easily be passed off as parts of various buildings.

These halls first appeared in episode 6 of season 1 of “Dalek” as a private museum of alien artifacts. In Episode 6 of Season 3, ” The Lazarus Experiment,” the hall and staircase of the Cardiff Museum were transformed into part of the eccentric scientist's science center .

Then, in the already mentioned 10th episode of the 5th season of “Vincent and the Doctor,” the art department was passed off as the Orsay Museum, where Van Gogh’s paintings were exhibited. In the science section, little Amelia Pond was hiding among the stuffed animals. And later the Pandorica opened there in the 13th episode of the 5th season “The Big Bang”. The museum houses collections in archaeology, botany, fine and applied arts, geology and zoology.

Cardiff Bay and Roald Dahl Square

It is impossible not to mention places that appeared many times in the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood. According to the plot, the base of the secret organization was located on Mermaid Embankment. It is very difficult to pass by this place – now there is a memorial plaque in memory of Ianto Jones, the hero of the series. He died during a confrontation with aliens. And numerous fans regularly leave notes and messages next to her.

But the secret entrance to Torchwood was hidden in another place – on Roald Dahl Square under the fountain stella “The Water Tower”. The Doctor and Martha Jones fly here in episode 11 of season 3 “Utopia”.
