Below and south of the river is the largest region in the country &#8211; Alentejo.<\/p>\n<p>You can talk endlessly about the beauty of these lands: here you will find <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/sao-pedro-do-sul-portugal-s-hidden-gem\/\" title=\"mountain landscapes\">mountain landscapes<\/a>, fields with olives and vineyards, and a rocky ocean coast. I\u2019ll probably focus on the latter during the swimming season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad553f41bb.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad553f41bb.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Weather in Alentejo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In July-August there is no rain here, it is usually sunny and hot &#8211; the air temperature <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/recomendet-tiqets_com-product-tours\">during<\/a> the day is 30-35\u2103. The Atlantic breeze and cool water &#8211; 20-22\u2103 &#8211; save you from the heat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5547f3aa.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5547f3aa.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Where to go and where to stay?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I'll tell you about three small coastal towns. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/rome-10-reasons-to-visit-the-eternal-city\/\" title=\"few\">few<\/a> attractions in them, but they have everything you need for a vacation &#8211; restaurants, shops, <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/to-argentina-on-your-own-how-to-get-there-hotels-what-to-see\/\" title=\"hotels\">hotels<\/a> and, of course, beaches. Please note that on <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/48-hours-in-porto-the-perfect-weekend-itinerary\/\" title=\"the port\">the port<\/a> of Gali beaches there are not always sun loungers with umbrellas, bathrooms and cafes.<\/p>\n<p>I saved all the locations on one map. If possible, visit different beaches &#8211; in this region they are very beautiful and different from one another.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad555097ff.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad555097ff.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sines<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This port town is the birthplace of Vasco Da Gama. In Sini\u0161 there is an avenue named after the navigator who opened the route to India. It has the main beach of the city (point <strong>A.<\/strong> <strong>Praia Vasco da Gama<\/strong>). A cozy cove with calm water and a sandy shore invites you to soak up the southern sun. The Vasco Da Gama monument looks down onto the beach from the hill (point <strong>B. Est\u00e1tua de Vasco Da Gama<\/strong>). It stands next to the temple where the famous native of Sines was baptized.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad555697dc.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad555697dc.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climb the wall of the Sines fortress (point <strong>C. Castelo de Sines<\/strong>) to get a better view of the bay with the port and see the roofs of the city houses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad555ce5b3.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad555ce5b3.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sines is small &#8211; only 12.5 thousand people live here. Therefore, a walk through the heart of the city will not take much time (point <strong>D. Centro Hist\u00f3rico de Sines<\/strong>). Cobbled streets, white houses with blue or yellow edging are the traditional flavor of this region.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the Garden of Discovery (point <strong>E. Jardim das Descobertas<\/strong>). How many of our tiny towns have such charm?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5563977d.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5563977d.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Go to the old railway station (point <strong>F. Cais da Esta\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong>). His warehouse was turned into a restaurant. This place has been included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/top-10-quality-marks-in-tourism\/\" title=\"Michelin\">Michelin<\/a> Guides twice. The food is regional and delicious. <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/bulgaria-or-montenegro-where-is-it-better-to-relax-in-2021\/\" title=\"Prices\">Prices<\/a> are affordable &#8211; just like in any other resort establishment. Industrial interior and service at a good European level &#8211; I recommend it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Porto Covo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/north-or-south-goa-where-is-the-best-place-to-relax-in-2021\/\" title=\"The beaches\">The beaches<\/a> in Porto Covo are works of art! Small sandy shores are hidden behind rocky cliffs &#8211; secluded and breathtakingly beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5569d41f.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5569d41f.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Porto Covo itself is a fishing village of a thousand inhabitants. Personally, I love small Portuguese places &#8211; they are cozy and cute. In addition, this is a tourist location, so here you will find not only ancient churches, well-kept houses and cobblestone streets, but also a bunch of restaurants and shops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5570da1f.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5570da1f.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Three kilometers from Porto Covo there is a peach island &#8211; Ilha do <strong>Pessegueiro<\/strong>. The peach trees are no longer there, but the ruins of a medieval fort remain. They say the island was once a haven for pirates. Now only the bravest can get there &#8211; by swimming. I couldn't find any organized tours.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5576adc6.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5576adc6.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the shore stands an abandoned 16th-century twin fort &#8211; Nossa Senhora da Queimada (<strong>Forte de Nossa Senhora da Queimada<\/strong>). There is a cozy restaurant next to it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Vila Nova de Milfontes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This town is firmly embedded in my memory. I felt some special vibe when I walked through the streets of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Cafes full of people. Charming houses with <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/top-15-souvenirs-from-portugal\/\" title=\"Azulejo\">Azulejo<\/a> numbers. Usually about 4 thousand people live here, but during the holiday season there are many more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad558390fc.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad558390fc.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Church of Nossa Senhora de F\u00e1tima (point <strong>A. Igreja de Nossa Senhora de F\u00e1tima)<\/strong> is the new temple of the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad558974f0.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad558974f0.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The old church from the 15th century bears the name of Our <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/top-15-souvenirs-from-buenos-aires\/\" title=\"Lady\">Lady<\/a> of Grace (point <strong>B. Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Gra\u00e7a<\/strong>). From here in August the river procession <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/poeff-dark-nights-guide-to-the-film-festival-in-estonia\/\" title=\"starts\">starts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the banks of the Mira River stands the 16th-century Fort de S\u00e3o Clemente (Point <strong>D. Forte de S\u00e3o Clemente<\/strong>). And next to it there is a monument to the aviators (point <strong>C. The waves here are much smaller than in the ocean, and the water, although just as salty, is 2-3 degrees warmer.<\/p>\n<p>The beautiful landscape at the mouth of the Mira can be seen from the observation deck near the statue of the Archangel (point <strong>E. Arcanjo<\/strong>). This sculpture conveys &#8220;pain or anger, as well as the desire to save the planet, mutilated by the hand of people,&#8221; as its author says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5596dd71.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad5596dd71.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Evora<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Take a day to see the capital of Alentejo &#8211; it is magnificent! I even thought about moving to Evora. But in the summer it is very hot there &#8211; sometimes up to 45\u00b0C &#8211; this stopped it. But don\u2019t let that stop you: wear a cap, sun cream, and go for a walk!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad559dbd9d.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad559dbd9d.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Evora is called a museum city. <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/top-5-most-popular-cities-in-europe-2024\/\" title=\"Roman\">Roman<\/a> buildings from the turn of our era have been preserved here. The capital of Alentejo is home to a dozen ancient temples, one of which has a chapel made of human bones. White houses with yellow portals create a cheerful, sunny atmosphere. This city is also about food &#8211; Alentejo is famous for its cuisine and wine.<\/p>\n<p>I have prepared a three-kilometer <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/what-to-see-in-varna-in-1-day-route-photo-description-map\/\" title=\"route\">route<\/a> through the main attractions of Evora. Enjoy exploring the city!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55a4f06d.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55a4f06d.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A. Aqueduct of Agua de Prata (Aqueduto de \u00c1gua de Prata)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is the oldest surviving structure in \u00c9vora. The 18 km long aqueduct was built by <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/pantheon-in-rome-history-photo-description-opening-hours-prices-2021-interesting-facts-map\/\" title=\"the Romans\">the Romans<\/a> in the 1st century BC. In the 16th century, a large-scale reconstruction took place, thanks to which as many as 9 km of the ancient water supply system have survived to this day. At its highest point, the aqueduct reaches 26 meters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55ab0f24.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55ab0f24.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>B. Street of Painted Houses (Travessa das Casas Pintadas)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On the Street of Painted Houses you will see huge panels depicting animals and mystical characters. These frescoes appeared at the beginning of the 16th century.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>C. Roman Temple (Templo romano de \u00c9vora)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another antiquity! It is considered the crown jewel of \u00c9vora and is one of the best preserved Roman buildings on the Iberian Peninsula. The structure is called the Temple of Diana, but there is a version that the sanctuary was erected in honor of Jupiter. This monument was built in the 1st century AD.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55b21dbf.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55b21dbf.avif\" alt=\"The beautiful beaches of Alentejo and its sunny capital, \u00c9vora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the 5th century, the Roman temple was badly damaged by the war with the Germanic peoples. In the 14th century, the ruins of the church became part of the castle, which helped preserve them until the 19th century. Then they decided to dismantle the medieval building, restoring, as far as possible, the primitive appearance of the Roman sanctuary<\/p>\n<h3><strong>D. University of \u00c9vora<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It is the second oldest university in Portugal after Coimbra. It was built in the 16th century. Not only the facade with a beautiful courtyard has survived to this day, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/crooked-house-krzywy-domek-in-sopot-poland-photo-description-architecture-interior\/\" title=\"the interior\">the interior<\/a> with panels of azulejo tiles. Entrance to the most famous part of the university, the College of the Holy Spirit (<strong>Col\u00e9gio do Esp\u00edrito Santo),<\/strong> costs 3 euros.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55b88106.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55b88106.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>E. Largo da Porta de Moura Square<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This square dates back to Roman times. For a long time it was an exit towards Bezhi and was located outside the city limits. In the 14th century, titled nobles began to settle here, leading to the expansion of \u00c9vora.<\/p>\n<p>The fountain was installed on the square by order of the king. This was his broad gesture for the local residents. Water entered the marble sphere through the Agua de Prata aqueduct.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55be9469.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55be9469.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>F. \u00c9vora Cathedral (S\u00e9 Catedral de \u00c9vora)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The square offers an impressive view of the fortress at the highest point of the city. Head towards her. But I\u2019ll say right away: this is not a castle at all, but the main cathedral of Evora. The temple is the largest in Portugal. It was built in the 12th-13th centuries. It was here that the navigator Vasco Da Gama received the blessing <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/30-must-see-attractions-in-oslo\/\" title=\"to\">to<\/a> travel to India.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55c5651b.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55c5651b.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside the church there is a sculpture of the pregnant Virgin Mary &#8211; it is unlikely that you will see a second one anywhere, because the Pope forbade depicting the Virgin Mary as pregnant or nursing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55cc1464.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-176504-661ad55cc1464.avif\" alt=\"Alentejo.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can climb the spiral staircase to the roof of the temple and see a panorama of the city and its surroundings from there. Entrance to the temple with a visit to the observation deck costs 3.5 euros. If you want to look into <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/diamond-fund-of-the-moscow-kremlin-history-photo-description-what-to-see\/\" title=\"the museum\">the museum<\/a> of religious treasures, you need to pay an extra 1 euro.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>G. Giraldo Square<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now we go to the central square of Evora. This is a typical Portuguese location, full of city life. It was built in the 16th century. Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The chapel with such a gloomy name belongs to the Church of St. Francis (<strong>Igreja de S\u00e3o Francisco<\/strong>). At the entrance you will see the inscription &#8220;Nos ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos&#8221;. It translates as &#8220;Our bones, lying here, are waiting for your bones.&#8221; We are, of course, talking about the temporality of bodies. More than 5 thousand human skeletons are woven into the walls of the temple. In the 16th century, they were collected in the cemeteries of churches and monasteries of Evora, solving, among other things, the problem of lack of burial places.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the Church of St. Francis has a terrace from where you can admire the white and yellow city.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>J. City Park of \u00c9vora (Jardim P\u00fablico de \u00c9vora)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After such impressions, it won\u2019t hurt to spend a little time in the lap of nature. I suggest you take a look at the city park.
