And this city truly makes you fall in love with it. This unexpected, but very hot romance <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/oman-10-reasons-to-visit-the-pearl-of-the-arabian-peninsula\/\" title=\"happened\">happened<\/a> between me and Szolnok. In my opinion, even the Hungarians do not fully understand what pearl they have lost in their necklace <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/top-5-most-popular-cities-in-europe-2024\/\" title=\"of\">of<\/a> attractions. This is what the story is about today: why go to Szolnok and where to while away the day in this city.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/20-best-beaches-of-corfu-list-photo-description-map\/\" title=\"How to get there\">How to get there<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Szolnok is a major railway station in central Hungary. And most trains traveling to the east and southeast of the country make a stop here. It is this <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/how-to-get-to-abkhazia-by-plane-train-bus-car\/\" title=\"transport\">transport<\/a> that I urge you to use by purchasing tickets on the website of the Hungarian Railway <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mavcsoport.hu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"external external_icon\">MAV<\/a> or at the station itself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/margaret-island-in-budapest-history-what-to-see-tips-and-a-map-2021\/\" title=\"Several trains leave Budapest\">Several trains leave Budapest<\/a> every hour and transit through Szolnok. The travel time is only 1.5 hours, and the ticket price is 1800-2200 forints (5-6 euros).<\/p>\n<p>You can get to Szolnok with the same ease from the second largest city in Hungary &#8211; Debrecen. Travel time is 10 minutes longer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I got here from Nyiregyhaza, the easternmost &#8220;district center&#8221; of the country. There are plenty of trains, they will take you 2 hours and will empty your wallet by only 10 euros.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>General information<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Szolnok is unofficially considered the capital of the Tisza region. The Tisza (and not, oddly enough, the Danube) is the longest river in Hungary. The city stretches on both sides of the waterway and has successfully used it for its own growth throughout its thousand-year history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/sak-yant-magical-shamanic-tattoo-history-meaning-of-tattoo-masters\/\" title=\"The history of\">The history of<\/a> Szolnok is the history of Hungary in miniature: wars and the creation of <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/denmark-15-unique-experiences-for-an-unforgettable-trip\/\" title=\"Denmark\">Denmark<\/a>, religious peace and strife. I don\u2019t know whether the locals learned lessons from history or from sincere love, but the city appeared cozy and successfully combined antiquity and modernity. Moreover, neither one nor the other can tip the scales to one side.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, to some of my fellow citizens Szolnok will be not just a familiar city, but practically a hometown. After all, it was here during the Cold War that the base of Soviet paratroopers serving in the Western contingent of troops was located.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/35-best-sights-of-kaliningrad-photo-description\/\" title=\"What to see\">What to see<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The city is quite easy to explore on foot, although <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/big-buddha-hill-in-pattaya-thailand-description-history-photos-how-to-get\/\" title=\"the attractions\">the attractions<\/a> are far from each other. But moving &#8220;point by point&#8221; is not about Szolnok at all. Its unforgettable charm consists of a lot of surprises and sometimes absurdities. After a few hundred steps from the station, for <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/rome-10-reasons-to-visit-the-eternal-city\/\" title=\"example\">example<\/a>, this reinforced concrete golem is waiting for you. Slowly dying because the city doesn't have enough funds for it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59594108.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59594108.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What other <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/recomendet-tiqets_com-product-tours\">tourists<\/a> devoted only a few lines in the guides to, I, who had seen enough of Buda <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/pest-top-15-attractions-in-eastern-budapest\/\" title=\"Pest\">Pest<\/a> by that time, still aroused delight. Szolnok monuments do not have loud signs. But this is the fault of people who underestimated them. Looking at them, I caught one flashback after another. Here is a reminder of the mosques of Istanbul, and here is <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/top-10-most-beautiful-castles-in-germany\/\" title=\"Neuschwanstein\">Neuschwanstein<\/a> Castle in miniature. Like every self-respecting Hungarian city, it is located on Lajos Kossuth Square, the hero of the Hungarian national revolution of 1848-1849.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa597cc2f0.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa597cc2f0.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Built in a classic style among its peers, the town hall is part of a cozy central park. The fountains are designed to create peace here, and the mood is created by a series of bronze sculptures for every taste. Here you will find a cat following on the heels of a successful fisherman, a cheerful tomboy scattering notebooks from his school bag, and a child of the new century &#8211; a boy with a skateboard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59834620.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59834620.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lutheran Church (Evangelikus templom)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now let\u2019s walk through the religious buildings of Szolnok. And the first of them is the Lutheran Church, a 5-minute walk from Lajos Kossuth Square. It was she who reminded me of the landscapes of Istanbul. Take a look at the photo and you will understand why.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59897372.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59897372.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Its only tower looks too much like a minaret from which muezzins call believers to prayer. But, of course, no, it\u2019s just similar. Despite the fact that Szolnok experienced Turkish domination for several centuries, its current churches for the most part did not survive these hard times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the architects, the only tower of the church should resemble not a mosque, but the Wittenberg Church in Germany. In which the &#8220;father&#8221; of Protestantism, Martin Luther, worked for a long time. In honor of this church, architects built a smaller copy in 1932, which became the main temple of the Szolnok Lutherans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Verseghy park and rose garden<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I suppose you are not tired yet, having just set off from the central park. But what can you do, you have to rest again. After all, such an opportunity cannot be missed. On our way we have the Versegi park and a beautiful rose garden, a favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/pantheon-in-rome-history-photo-description-opening-hours-prices-2021-interesting-facts-map\/\" title=\"attraction\">attraction<\/a> for the people of Solnok.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa598ebf7d.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa598ebf7d.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Baroque park opened to the public in 1930. It was named after the Hungarian writer Ferenc Verszegi. At the same time, they created a rose garden with unique varieties of Hungarian roses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the park you will find a lot of wonderful solutions in the field of landscape design. There are flower arches, a small pool with sculptures of frogs, and secluded corners for avid introverts. An ideal place to spend time after a busy walk. As you remember, I promised you a mini Neuschwanstein. Still the same three turrets, still the same neo-Gothic profile, soaring upward. Maybe, after all, the Disney logo was copied not from a monument of Bavarian architecture, but from the Reformed church in Szolnok?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59955333.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59955333.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let's leave these comparisons and enjoy what we have. The church was built in 1894, when the Hungarians were experiencing a construction boom throughout the country. Made of red brick, it somewhat resembles a fortress. Its narrow, high windows complement this militant image.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Former Szolnok Synagogue (now Szolnok Gallery)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The exhibition hall of Szolnok's religious architecture continues with the building of the former Jewish synagogue. Please note that all these religious buildings are lined up one after another at a distance of 200 meters. What a competition there was for believers! However, Judaism lost it. And he did not keep his own synagogue in his parish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa599b9971.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa599b9971.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The synagogue, built in 1898 in an eclectic style, was richly decorated even by the standards of its larger brothers. But her best times were over. After World War II, the Jewish community in the city shrank so much that there was no longer any need for a synagogue. It was turned into an art gallery. Having previously deprived <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/crooked-house-krzywy-domek-in-sopot-poland-photo-description-architecture-interior\/\" title=\"the interior\">the interior<\/a> of a number of evidence of past life &#8211; the Star of David, Torah symbols and the richly decorated latticework at the entrance.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Church of the Holy Trinity (Belv\u00e1rosi templom)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Why are we worse?&#8221; &#8211; the Catholics thought and also decided to pamper the tourists of the future with an architectural monument. Just some 300 meters &#8211; and we are at the threshold of the Church of the Holy Trinity, the main Catholic church of the city. And one of the oldest city buildings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59a224c2.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59a224c2.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The baroque temple was slowly built over 40 years from the beginning of the 18th century. While the temple was being built, it managed to collapse, which required numerous reconstructions. As a result, the Church of the Holy Trinity acquired its modern appearance in the mid-19th century.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bridge over the Tisa<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Let's briefly interrupt our <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/recomendet-getyourguide_com-product\">tour<\/a> of ancient sites to stop at the bridge over the Tisa. This bridge is a source of special pride for local residents. It\u2019s no joke, but the town of 70 thousand has the longest pedestrian bridge in Central Europe. Its length is 444 meters.<\/p>\n<p>Finding the bridge is not difficult. Turn from the Holy Trinity Church towards the river. Do you see the slender airy structure? It is he. On the way to him, think: does this lean, handsome guy look like he weighs 550 tons?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59a733e2.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59a733e2.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There will be a reasonable question: where does such elegance come from in the middle of the Hungarian hinterland? The bridge engineers decided to use one of the symbols of the region in the design. The same name as the river &#8220;yew flower&#8221;. Perhaps you imagined a beautiful plant? No matter how it is. &#8220;Yew flower&#8221; is a type of bee. Watching the massive swarming of these insects, unlike the domestic bees we are used to, has become a tourist attraction. And at the same time it inspired the creation of a beautiful bridge.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to walk through it. The elastic design and the feeling of the bridge swaying will add adrenaline to your walk. Moreover, on the other side of Tisza there is a spa area where locals like to relax.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Church of the Holy Spirit in Ujv\u00e1ros (\u00dajv\u00e1rosi Szentl\u00e9lek-templom)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On your way to one of the main tourist destinations in Szolnok, stop by the Church of the Holy Spirit in Ujv\u00e1ros. Its location may be somewhat confusing. After all, this is a cemetery church.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59ac09f2.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59ac09f2.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I hope you do not have any prejudices against short-term visits to the kingdom of the dead. After all, the church, which was built in the neo-Renaissance style, is worth looking at at least from behind the fence. The unusual combination of the entrance colonnade and the lonely tower soaring upward, coupled with the grave surroundings, will be remembered by the traveler for a long time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>RepT\u00e1r Aviation <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/diamond-fund-of-the-moscow-kremlin-history-photo-description-what-to-see\/\" title=\"Museum\">Museum<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So we came to the point that one <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/top-10-quality-marks-in-tourism\/\" title=\"TripAdvisor\">TripAdvisor<\/a> user short-sightedly called &#8220;the only worthwhile place in Szolnok.&#8221; As you saw from the review above, such a claim is completely baseless. But, nevertheless, the aviation museum is a really worthwhile location. Especially for those traveling with children, for whom the interactive <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/20-best-things-to-do-in-kaliningrad-for-kids-list-prices-2021-photo-description-map\/\" title=\"entertainment\">entertainment<\/a> of the museum, as well as the opportunity to gawk at the mass of aviation equipment, will be a joy.<\/p>\n<p>The museum consists of an indoor and an outdoor part. The open part can even be viewed as a &#8220;hare&#8221;. Some of the exhibits are visible through the fence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59b28187.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59b28187.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The museum has a large collection of military aircraft and helicopters. The Mi-8, MiG-21, and Su-22 are widely known to those born in the USSR. So are the imported formidable &#8220;Messers&#8221; Bf 108 from World War II, allied cargo DC-3 and later Czech training aircraft L-39.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/30-must-see-attractions-in-oslo\/\" title=\"The cost of an adult\">The cost of an adult<\/a> ticket to the museum is 2900 forints (8 euros). Children are admitted to the museum for free. You can also try yourself on various pilot simulators in the museum: <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/bulgaria-or-montenegro-where-is-it-better-to-relax-in-2021\/\" title=\"the prices\">the prices<\/a> are very liberal &#8211; only 1.5-2 euros. The museum is closed on Mondays.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What else?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On the way back, walk along <strong>the Tisza embankment<\/strong>. In some parts it is just a path in the middle of a forest belt, but quickly turns into a nice and well-maintained promenade. In the already calm Szolnok, during a walk you can immerse yourself in unity with nature and your own thoughts. And, of course, in contemplation of the beautiful Tisa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59b82557.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59b82557.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With due persistence (the location is at the other end of the RepT\u00e1r Museum), this walk will lead to the territory of the former castle. Almost nothing remained of it, but in its place <strong>the Church of Our <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/top-15-souvenirs-from-buenos-aires\/\" title=\"Lady\">Lady<\/a> of Magyar<\/strong> <strong>(V\u00e1rtemplom)<\/strong> was erected. It was built from the stones of a nearby destroyed Turkish mosque and the remains of a medieval temple. This is such a forced donation from two religious opponents at once.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59be0abb.avif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp\" src=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/post-172245-661aa59be0abb.avif\" alt=\"Hungarian terra incognita: what to see and do in Szolnok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Returning to the city center to the Lutheran Church, you can let yourself go and relax. For this there is <strong>Tisza hotel & Spa<\/strong>. Guests have at their disposal 2 Turkish baths, saunas and <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.com.de\/en\/kos-island-5-ideas-for-a-perfect-vacation\/\" title=\"thermal springs\">thermal springs<\/a>, for which the Hungarian land is famous.
