Usually, when talking about this hobby, one imagines early morning and men leisurely enjoying the views and waiting for the catch. Only fishing can be an extremely dynamic activity when it becomes a sport. John Smith is the champion of his country and the world in feeder fishing. He told about the features of this sport and how it is connected with tourism.

Feeder fishing is a fishing technique using special rods and feeders. It requires special skills and knowledge, as well as quick reaction and endurance. Unlike traditional fishing, sport feeder fishing takes place in a competition format, where participants strive to catch as many fish as possible in a limited time.

John noted that feeder fishing is closely linked to tourism, as competitions are often held in scenic locations around the world. Athletes and lovers of this type of fishing travel to different countries to take part in tournaments or simply enjoy fishing in new bodies of water. This contributes to the development of tourism infrastructure in the regions and draws attention to local natural beauty.

— How does sport fishing differ from the usual average fishing, when someone went to sit on the lake in the morning?

— Sport fishing is always more organized. The athlete who is on the pond “reads” it. For example , with a special marker to check the depth and topography of the bottom. From the start of fishing, he already knows which fish are more active in this body of water and which one should be caught.

An amateur just comes, sets up a chair or an armchair of some kind, takes with him beer, chips or just tea and coffee. He puts on the most popular bait – a worm or maggots – throws the hook and sits waiting for a bite. Whether he sees this bite or not, the main thing is that he rested.

If this is some kind of amateur paid fishing, then the forwarders who carry them already know where the fish are and what kind. They catch sea fish in certain places. She is constantly fed at these points and bags of bait are thrown in. And so the fish stays in this territory. When tourists arrive, the organizers boil a shrimp or cut some fish into pieces and throw it into the sea. Then tourists eagerly catch and have fun. They just had such a vacation, as they say, for the money they spent.

— When we talk about sport fishing, do we include tourism here?

– Of course, it’s all tied to one thing. The leaders in this direction are England, France, Serbia and Estonia. At the World Championships, England mainly takes places, and Russia also fishes well. We are performing well too.

At the last World Championships in Italy, the team from Northern Europe won. Our team took seventh place. And the previous world championship was held in one of the countries of Eastern Europe. Our team won it. It was planned to hold the next tournament in France, but the pandemic began, which made adjustments to the competition schedule.

Despite the difficulties associated with restrictions due to COVID-19, feeder fishing continues to grow and attract new fans around the world. Athletes hope that in the near future it will be possible to resume international competitions in full so that they can meet again on the shores of picturesque bodies of water and compete for the title of the best in their field. In the meantime, all that remains is to improve your skills at home and look forward to the opportunity to test your strength again on the world stage.

— There is an organization FIPS (International Federation of Fishing Sports). It sends a request to each participating country. Before this, internal qualifiers take place in three stages on different bodies of water. The five strongest athletes are selected, the sixth is a reserve. Then the best results represent the country.

Trips are paid in half: part by the local federation, part by sponsors. These are different bait manufacturers or specialized stores.

The federation also sponsors training camps. This is an expensive pleasure, since the same complementary food is thrown away not in cups, but in buckets. When the team is training, the coordinators look at what is biting and offer to change fishing if necessary.

Sport fishing lasts five hours. For example , if you catch active fish, then this is more than four to five thousand casts. The arms then simply fall off. You need to be physically prepared.

— So sport fishing is quite expensive?

– Yes, sure! But I think you can save money here too. For example, buy 3-4 jars of maggots, take a couple of jars of worms and go somewhere, especially if you are already navigating a certain body of water. Such tours can be organized even on our reservoirs. And the person will catch a couple of kilograms.

— It’s much more expensive there. In Europe, in order to fish in a pond, you need to get a license. They are disposable, reusable, and for sport fishing. The latter are purchased for participation in championships. Licenses for a team cost about a thousand euros. After purchasing them, you can already train and compete on these reservoirs.

The cost may also depend on the fish. Carp fishing pays a lot of money. And it is probably the most expensive, because the carp only costs 500-600 dollars to feed.

In general, training can cost about $1000. But when you win, different sponsors step up and pay some money.

— Which countries of those you mentioned have the most stringent requirements for fishing?

– England, France. But in Serbia, Poland, and Lithuania they are softer, they are more attached to our conditions. It's easier to catch there and cheaper. And further west it’s more difficult and takes a bigger toll on your pocket.

— Of the countries you named, where did you like the most?

– France, Italy. There's a big fish there. They are more civilized in terms of fishing, and all competitions are well organized. And not only professional, but also amateur. And the departures are convenient, the attitude is good. And yet, their conditions are milder than in other countries. Each athlete has a judge who counts and records the fish, and even suggests something.

— In general, is this kind of fishing quite common in Europe?

Igor notes that they are prepared for the reservoirs. In addition to locals renting out their waterfront cabins, many people have mobile homes. They arrive, park the cars, connect the sockets. Only, of course, there must be a fisherman's card. And so they go on vacation with their families. In Europe, pond owners conduct master classes. They have more developed carp fishing and bream. They fish there and arrange battles among themselves to see who can catch the most fish. They release all the fish, take nothing with them, and do not destroy anything.

And the fish in their reservoirs are heavily “pricked”; they are quite careful. If ours grabs greedily and flies, then their fish will pull, and you will pull past. This will continue until you select the correct hook weight, leash length or attachment. And there are just tons of fish there.

They catch a lot of us and take away everything. There are fewer fish in reservoirs than there were before. If 10 years ago athletes reached 40-50 kg of ostera in five hours, now it is not there. Most likely because they catch a lot. They have stopped cleaning the rivers, navigation has stopped, but within Gomel they are dragging sand, digging it up, and the river is all shallow.

And fish need holes to spawn. For us, fish appear at a time when the Dnieper begins to give something back. The water has risen, the fish are moving to these great depths, where Volodkino, Regional Committee, Lyubinskoye are. And in the fall, when the weather starts to get colder, the fish are no longer so active. And it goes to the Dnieper. It’s more fun there with the depths, the natural conditions and the relief are good.

Discover the world of sport fishing!
