The ghost town of AlUla has been an important cultural crossroads<\/a> for thousands of years. And after Saudi Arabia opened to travelers in 2019, Al-Ula “came out to the public.” The city has quickly established itself as one of the world's best places to discover.<\/p>\n

Today, AlUla boasts an abundance of natural treasures, a thriving art scene and some of Saudi Arabia's most luxurious hotels. We've compiled a list of must-sees here. You can organize an entire trip just for this!<\/p>\n

Visit Madain Salih<\/h2>\n

Madain Salih is Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO<\/a> World Heritage Site. In ancient times it was known as Hegra and was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. The inhabitants of Hegra left behind many clues demonstrating the level of development of their culture. First of all, we are talking about monumental tombs and petroglyphs – it is truly inspiring.<\/p>\n

And if you plan a trip here from January to March, you can take part in Hegra After Dark. It's a three-hour night chariot ride through candle-lit tombs. You can even take a ride through the labyrinths of the ghost town with children no younger than five years old.<\/p>\n

Watch the sunset at Elephant Rock<\/h2>\n

A few minutes from Madain Salih is Jebel Alfil, also known as Elephant Rock. This is a curious geological feature that was formed over millions of years of erosion. And today it is one of the most iconic symbols of modern Al-Ula.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When night falls on nearby Madain Salih, visitors can find a cozy spot in one of the sun loungers surrounding Elephant Rock. They were placed here specifically to give guests of Al-Ula the opportunity to admire one of the most vibrant sunsets in the country. And when the sun disappears below the horizon, you can look for constellations in the sky and have dinner by the fire.<\/p>\n

Visit the Old Town Market<\/h2>\n

The old city<\/a> of AlUla is actually relatively modern. Locals live in stone and adobe buildings dating back to the 12th century. But nothing modern is alien to them.<\/p>\n

At the Old Town Market, visitors can browse hundreds of shops. They mainly specialize, as expected, in traditional handicrafts, local arts and cuisine.<\/p>\n

After browsing the local shops and purchasing souvenirs, you can enjoy an authentic Saudi lunch. You can taste traditional dishes<\/a> at Suhail. This is a local restaurant with traditional dishes on the menu but modern service. And at night it is also incredibly beautiful here.<\/p>\n

Tour Dadan in a vintage Land Rover<\/h2>\n

Another attraction<\/a> for history buffs: the ancient capital of the kingdoms of Dadan and Lihyan, the appearance of which dates back to the first millennium AD. Here, travelers can see traces of ancient rule in the untouched inscriptions carved into the walls of red stone tombs guarded by intricate lion sculptures.<\/p>\n

You can see the city by driving around in a classic Land Rover convertible with a driver and a guide<\/a>. Tours<\/a> last about two hours and include a visit to Jebel Iqma Mountain, with petroglyphs and thousands of inscriptions in ancient pre-Arabic languages. There you will also find one of the earliest versions of written Arabic.<\/p>\n

Attend a concert at Maraya<\/h2>\n

If you think that AlUla will only offer you a taste of history, then no. Maraya is a symbol of the “real” and has already established itself as one of the most exciting cultural centers in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The building was built in a futuristic style. It consists of almost 10 thousand mirror panels that literally reflect the surrounding desert landscape. Fans of innovative architecture will be wildly delighted. Concerts are often held here.<\/p>\n

And on the roof of the complex there is the Maraya Social restaurant from British chef Jason Atherton, winner of a Michelin<\/a> star. Its menu features dishes with innovative takes on Arabic cuisine. It is worth booking a table here in advance.<\/p>\n

Visit a contemporary art exhibition<\/h2>\n

The Maraya hosts not only concerts, but also film screenings, various performances and art exhibitions<\/a>. And every year from December to January the “Winter on Tantora” festival takes place. During this period, you can see traditional dances, rituals – in general, get involved in the local culture.<\/p>\n

Sleep in an oasis<\/h2>\n

After visiting the attractions<\/a> above, you will need some rest. To do this, you can take an exclusive bungalow located in an oasis. Just imagine being in the cradle of karst sandstones, palm groves and a swimming pool.<\/p>\n
