Some things can shock, some can inspire, and some can create ridiculous situations.

Before you go to any country – and today we will learn more about the traditions of India – it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the peculiarities of behavior in it. And for your own comfort, it doesn’t hurt to be savvy in local rituals. Despite the friendly attitude of local residents towards tourists' ignorance of their rules and customs, it is better to command respect rather than create unnecessary incidents.

I think many people know that the Hindus have a sacred animal – the cow. But they do not simply honor them, but give them complete freedom of action. In India, it is quite easy to see a huge number of cows walking along the streets of villages and along the avenues of cities. The slightest carelessness towards an animal on the part of a person can lead to quite sad consequences, including imprisonment.

If you want to greet one of the locals, you can’t think of anything better than folding your hands in front of your chest in a “namaste” greeting. You should not demonstratively display your feelings. For example, hugging, kissing, and holding hands are considered vulgar and inappropriate actions. Pointing at something or someone with your index finger is also an indecent gesture. It can be replaced by a sign consisting of a wave of an outstretched arm or a shake of the chin.

In India, the right hand is used for eating food , which is considered “clean”. At the table, when eating and passing food, you should use it. Hindus consider the left hand to be dirty, so it is undesirable for it to touch not only food, but also another person. For an Indian, food is a gift from the gods, and eating is a ritual. You should not leave leftover food on the plate. This shows disrespect for the owner. There are also no lively conversations during meals.

Culinary guide to Goa: what to try and where to eat

In India you can easily meet a barefoot person – and it will not necessarily be a poor person. Local residents have an unusual attitude towards shoes. They will take it as a personal insult if they notice the soles of their feet pointing in their direction. So, when communicating with them, you should not sit cross-legged.

Before entering holy places, you should take off your shoes and dress as modestly and covered as possible, especially for women. They are not allowed to enter temples with their heads, shoulders and legs uncovered. If you are in Goa, be sure to visit the Mahadeva Temple, Sri Shantadurga Temple, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. But, of course, the most popular place in terms of attendance remains the Taj Mahal in Agra.

How can you not miss the famous three-day Indian weddings! The tradition of arranged marriage is still alive in India. Agreements between families and Hinduism require one marriage for life, so parents of newlyweds carefully choose a partner for their child. They even resort to using a compatibility horoscope.

Be prepared that there are plenty of beggars in India who pester tourists and extort alms. They call it “baksheesh”. Usually served if an Indian has performed some kind of service and the traveler wants to reward him. In all other situations, alms should be refused. Otherwise, by the end of the holiday, giving alms to everyone, you can be left without money. The solution in this case is simple: do not pay attention to annoying petitioners. And there are plenty of them, believe me.

The Hindus have a particularly amazing ritual of farewell to their last journey. Cremation is the main type of burial in India. Death is not perceived as a misfortune, but, on the contrary, symbolizes the liberation of the soul for the transition to another form of existence. Burning the body helps the spirit to quickly find the path between the earthly and spiritual worlds.

There is no better place in India to spend your last journey than Varanasi. It is believed that the deceased, whose body is burned there, instantly enters nirvana, bypassing the cycle of reincarnation. At the same time, the cremation ritual has strict rules: the body is burned exclusively on a fire made of natural wood. The fire burns there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. After burning, the remains are dumped into the river.

In a word, India is a country with customs that are not so easy for a tourist to accept, but it is advisable to observe them.
