American citizenship has become a cherished dream for many. Some are looking for relatives who have long settled in the States or employers who are ready to help with documents; others manage to win a green card. There are those who are ready to wait and act for the future – they go to the USA<\/a> to give birth. Let's figure out whether giving birth in America is so attractive in order to obtain additional citizenship. And should South American countries such as Chile and Argentina<\/a> be considered as an alternative?<\/p>\n

Citizenship for a child<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Citizenship by place of birth, or as it is also called “by right of soil,” is issued to a newborn by each of these countries. However, in Chile, unlike the United States<\/a> and Argentina, parents must be residents of the country or at least claim to be residents. Otherwise, the child will not receive the status of a Chilean citizen.<\/p>\n

Permanent residence and citizenship for parents<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Argentina has the simplest conditions for issuing passports to new citizens. The parents of the young Argentinean will receive permanent residence and the right to citizenship the same moment the baby is born. True, the procedure for obtaining citizenship will take at least a year, or even two. It is not necessary to stay in the country all this time, but it is recommended to spend at least six months in Argentina before receiving your passport. Over time, it is possible to transport even distant relatives to the country with resident status. Brothers or sisters will be able to become full Argentines and obtain citizenship only after 18 years of age.<\/p>\n

In Chile, things are a little more confusing. To obtain resident status, you must live in the country for at least a year, and after receiving permanent residence, you must not leave the country for more than a year, otherwise your status will be cancelled. To be eligible to apply for citizenship, you must have lived in Chile for five years. And in practice: the year of permanent residence is not included in this five-year plan. But not only parents, but also grandparents, brothers and sisters of the child have the opportunity to become Chileans.<\/p>\n

In the States, permanent residence, much less citizenship, is not provided for the parents of a child. Only after a US citizen turns 21 will his parents and “siblings” (brothers and sisters) be able to apply for the status of residents of the country. To obtain citizenship, you must live in the United States legally for at least five years.<\/p>\n

Visa-free entry<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The strongest passport on our list belongs to the Americans. They can visit 187 countries without visas, according to the 2023 Henley Passport Index<\/a>. Including those that require an arrival stamp or an e-visa.<\/p>\n

The Chilean passport is eight positions inferior to the American one and allows free entry into 175 countries, including the USA and Canada.<\/p>\n

The borders of 171 countries are open to citizens of Argentina, but America and Canada are not included in this list.<\/p>\n

Visa for childbirth<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Argentina is as open as possible to tourists<\/a> from the CIS countries. A visa is not required to visit the country for less than 90 days from the date of arrival, except for citizens of Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan<\/a>. After this period, a stamp must be placed. When visiting Argentina, it is important to indicate that the purpose of your visit is tourism, not childbirth.<\/p>\n

There is no special visa for “maternity tourism”, so a B1\/B2 type visitor visa is usually issued. America is the most expensive country on our list. Each additional analysis can cost +$1000 to the total bill. You can give birth in a hospital or birth center.<\/p>\n

\"Childbirth,<\/a><\/p>\n

A birth center may seem more attractive due to its cost – on average $4,000 – but only if the pregnancy is easy. Such centers are focused on the independent process of childbirth. Only an obstetrician provides assistance to a woman. If any complications<\/a> arise, the mother in labor will have to go to the hospital and pay an additional bill.<\/p>\n

The hospital usually has a full staff of doctors and intensive care equipment. The woman in labor is given a separate room. The average amount you can expect for a natural birth without complications is $10,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The presence of the father at the birth is encouraged in all these countries.<\/p>\n

In addition to the cost of medical services, young parents must provide for the costs of insurance, flights, rental housing and cars, food, paperwork<\/a>, expenses for baby supplies, etc. Be prepared, giving birth abroad is not cheap.<\/p>\n
