Old and young forests in noisy urban areas and outskirts are the parks of Moscow – the pride and decoration of the capital. Green areas traditionally serve as places for family walks, active and secluded recreation for residents and guests of the metropolis. Largely thanks to the efforts of citizens, ancient estates, ponds, churches, fountains and monuments of the distant and recent past were preserved. Subsequently, many new public recreation areas were laid out and built in the city.

Gorky Park

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

The green lungs of the capital offer residents and guests of the city a break from the hustle and bustle of cars. The park with an area of 219.7 hectares was founded in 1928. Today, the vast territory includes a walking area, an amusement area, a Muzeon sculpture park, Vorobyovy Gory and Neskuchny Garden.

A cozy corner of nature in the center of the capital gives a lot of opportunities for year-round recreation. In summer, it is good to wander along the well-groomed paths lost among centuries-old trees, to become a spectator of an open-air concert, to surf the surface of local ponds on a catamaran, and, lying on a comfortable sun lounger, take a sunbath.

Athletes will appreciate tennis courts, a free yoga school, bike paths, playgrounds and strength exercises. In winter, lovers of figure skating and speed skating come to the right bank of the Moscow River. They are attracted by Europe's largest artificial ice rink with an area of 15,000 m2.

Boring Garden

A cozy resting place is part of the modern Gorky Park. The oldest landscape park Zlatoglavaya reminds of the three capital noble estates – the estates of the Orlovs, Demidovs, Golitsyns and the Trubetskoy estate, called Neskuchnoye.

In 1847, Nicholas I acquired the property of the Moscow princes, creating a huge park on the lands of the estates. A boring garden gives not only the opportunity to take a break from the noise and get a portion of fresh air.

He collected the sights of several eras. Walking through the forest, where it is cool even in the summer heat, you will meet the Alexandria Palace, built in the middle of the 18th century, the house of Count Orlov in 1796, the snow-white rotunda, built for the 800th anniversary of the city, the mineralogical museum, bridges and the Grotto pavilion.

In 2007, the family of shady paths was supplemented by the Alley of Love – a meeting place for lovers, decorated with clocks with arrows frozen forever.

Zaryadye

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

The newest symbol of the metropolis is located in the holy of holies of the capital – next to Red Square. Muscovites received a gift in the form of a modern recreation and entertainment area in 2017. Modest size (0.13 km2) did not prevent him from gaining popularity among the townspeople and tourists.

However, one should not hope that one can walk here in the shade of lush vegetation – the authors of Zaryadye set themselves completely different goals.

This place is called “a miracle of engineering”. On the territory representing a symbiosis of natural landscapes and climatic zones of Russia, innovative objects were placed: a philharmonic society, an archaeological underground museum, a protected embassy, an interactive Media Center and a gourmet paradise – the Gastronomic Pavilion. Recently, the kingdom of the Snow Queen appeared here – an ice cave with an area of 350 m2.

The heart of the park is the soaring bridge, from the height of which you can take a photo of the Moskva River embankment and the Kremlin towers.

Sokolniki

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

One of the few places in Moscow where the spirit of the end of the last century has been preserved. There are still couples waltzing on the Dance Veranda, pensioners recklessly playing dominoes, and schoolchildren competing in Dodgeball at the Pioneer creative center.

Rope complex, trampoline arena and modern attractions peacefully side by side with the good old carousels. Interest clubs await dog breeders, chess players and calligraphers, and ornithology enthusiasts can visit the only Ornithary in Russia.

The corner of nature is located in the north-east of the city and covers an area of 5.16 km2. Sokolniki is always fun and interesting. Educational forums, bike paths, a sports alley, a swimming pool, a go-kart center, a large rose garden, a money garden, a living corner, cafes and restaurants invite adults and children.

Every year, thousands of sweet-toothed people flock to the Ice Cream Festival, and those who want to have a hearty meal are waiting for the Food Truck Festival.

Alexander Garden

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

Previously, the Neglinka River flowed here. In 1819, the shallow water artery was enclosed in a pipe, and a park was laid out in its place. The order to create the garden was given by Alexander I, and the green corner in the heart of Belokamennaya was named after him. Three alleys cut through 10 hectares of lawns and natural landscapes located between the territory of the Kremlin and Manezhnaya Square. Schematically, the park area is divided into three parts.

The upper garden welcomes guests with cast-iron gates decorated with gilded elements symbolizing military victories. On the left is a memorial dear to the heart of every Russian – the Eternal Flame, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and steles, personifying hero cities.

Further – the Italian grotto and the Romanovsky obelisk. Walking among the fountains, sculptures, flower beds and figurines of fairy-tale characters, visitors through the Trinity Bridge find themselves in the Middle Garden – the realm of silence, birdsong and beautiful landscapes. The lower garden is closed to the public.

Victory Park

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

The park next to Kutuzovsky Prospekt is the most important sight of the city and a symbolic place for veterans – heroes of the Great Patriotic War. The complex located in the Western district of the capital reminds contemporaries of the horrors of 1941-1945 and the victory of the Soviet Union.

The architectural ensemble includes:

It is good to come to Poklonnaya Gora with the whole family. The objects of the memorial introduce children to the history of the Motherland and the patriotism of its sons. A thematic attraction center was built next to the complex. Slides, carousels, boats and cars will not only entertain young visitors, but also illustrate military equipment and battle scenes.

Muzeon Arts Park

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

Guests of Gorky Park are greeted by a unique open-air museum, which has collected about 800 wooden, stone and bronze figures. With the light hand of Muscovites, this place is called the cemetery of sculptures. Such a strange name is connected with the history of the park.

In 1970, the construction of a new building of the Tretyakov Gallery began on Krymsky Val. The grandiose building was ready in 9 years. However, the nearby construction waste dump “pleased” the townspeople for a long time, until the artists turned it into a park.

The main part of the Muzeon collection is made up of sculptures from the Soviet period, which were left overboard after the 1991 coup d'état. On the territory of 24 hectares there are abstract figures, monuments to the leaders of the Soviet people, great writers and heroes of books.

The historical artifacts are accompanied by modern compositions dedicated to the years of the Great Patriotic War and Stalinist repressions.

Babushkinsky Park is ready to receive guests all year round.

In warm weather, you can ride a horse or in an old carriage, rent roller skates, a bicycle or an electric car, work out on simulators, admire the play of water at the light and music fountain, watch a movie in the 5D summer cinema with the whole family and sit in open cafes.

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

You can take a walk among native birch trees and overseas palms, find out what insectivorous plants look like, watch water turtles, goldfish and Iriska iguana in the garden of the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University.

The corner of wildlife owes its appearance to Peter I, by whose decree in 1706 a garden of medical herbs and plants was created on the northern outskirts of the capital (now the Ramenki district). In 1805, the pharmacy garden was bought by Moscow University.

This place is a paradise for photographers and lovers of botany. The first ones will take hundreds of photographs of picturesque landscapes here. The latter will discover plants from all over the world: American ferns, European rhododendrons, Far Eastern heather, Siberian cedar, desert cacti and succulents, northern lichens, mosses and living stones, exotic papaya and guava, tropical vines, bananas and bromeliads.

From December to March, the Rare Orchid Festival takes place in the garden.

Brateevsky cascade park

A unique object, created by the joint efforts of man and nature, is located in the southeast of the metropolis. The green zone, spread over 42 hectares, is remarkable for its relief. Man-made terraces-cascades, originating from Borisovskie Prudy Street, descend to the banks of the Moskva River.

The walking area pleases the eye with alleys with a panoramic view of the embankment, comfortable stairs, well-equipped playgrounds, decorative lamps, flower beds and cozy gazebos.

The park was donated to Muscovites in 2006. Until that moment, the inhabitants of Brateevo looked at the unattractive wasteland and swampy dams. During the construction of the Lefortovsky tunnel in 2001, the city authorities decided to use the released soil for landscaping. Today, the park is a quiet recreation area, loved by mothers with prams and young athletes occupying exercise equipment and a football field.

Sparrow Hills

The green massif was named after the clergyman. Now this place is chosen by connoisseurs of forest walks and sports fans. The territory of the forest park is cut through by a 10-kilometer pedestrian zone on the Moskva River embankment, equipped with roller and bicycle rental points.

Photographers also drop in here – a green oasis in the south-west of the city is equipped with an observation deck with a panoramic view. They climb it with the help of a cable car. From a height of 80 m, endless possibilities for landscape and city photography open up.

The skyscrapers of Moscow City, Stalinist skyscrapers on Kudrinskaya Square, the Novodevichy Convent, the Moscow River with snow-white boats, the Luzhnetskaya Embankment, the Berezhkovsky Bridge and the Luzhniki sports complex appear before the audience in full view.

In the north-east of the city, not far from the All-Russian Exhibition Center, there is the Ostankino Forest Park. On its territory in 1945, the Botanical Garden was founded, which later became the largest in Europe.

Here, among the numerous ponds, coniferous forest, centuries-old oak forests, thickets of willow, juniper, birch and aspen groves, only the spire of the Television Tower, rising above the crowns of trees, reminds of a noisy metropolis.

Of greatest interest in the park, which occupies 360 hectares, are the Stock Greenhouse and the Japanese Garden. In the greenhouse, which includes two buildings, the inhabitants of the subtropics found shelter: palm trees, laurels, cypresses, dracaena, succulents, azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons and a real baobab.

The second attraction, the island of the Land of the Rising Sun, is a landscape composition that combines an 18th-century stone pagoda, a stream, a cascade of waterfalls, traditional bridges and lanterns. The garden is especially beautiful in spring, during the cherry blossom season.

Lianozovsky park

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

The village was named in his honor, and then the Moscow district and the recreation area located on its territory. Today, the park is that rare case when reality turns out to be better than photos on the Internet.

Finding yourself here, you find yourself in the realm of flora and fauna. The dendrological composition includes 70 plant species. Squirrels live in their crowns – Ryzhik and Donut. A special place is occupied by an oak grove, the mighty inhabitants of which rise to 25 m.

Graceful swans add a romantic atmosphere to the six ponds and interfere with the fishermen who are frozen with fishing rods on the shore. On the basis of archaeological excavations, it was found that as early as the 11th century there was a Slavic settlement of Dyakova Poima.

Today this place has partially preserved the ancient landscape. Centuries-old trees – witnesses of the life of Russian tsars – frame historical buildings, the oldest of which, the Church of the Ascension, appeared in 1532.

The most famous building of the complex is the wooden palace-terem, erected during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov. The treasures of Kolomenskoye include the house of Peter I, the Mokhovaya Tower, the Holy Gates, the Kazan Church.

There is a park next to the architectural masterpieces. It is famous for its ravines, apple orchards, sacral stones and an observation deck that offers a panoramic view of the magnificent coast of the Moskva River.

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

In the south of Moscow, in a picturesque area cut by ravines and hills, there is a palace and park ensemble – an architectural monument of the Russian Gothic style, which appeared during the time of Catherine II.

In 1755, the tsarina set out to create a new residence, entrusting the construction to Vasily Bazhenov. However, the plans of the architect were not destined to come true – after the death of the Empress in 1796, the construction work was completed.

The modern Tsaritsyno appeared in 2007. Figured brick gates separate the guests of the historical complex from the bustle of the metropolis. Behind them are amazing objects, among which the light and music fountain occupies not the last place.

Take a walk along the well-groomed paths, appreciate the beauty of the Grand and Small Palaces, the Opera House, the Kitchen and Cavalry Buildings, the Bread Gates and the bridge decorated with towers. Greenhouses are open in the reserve, exhibiting representatives of the world flora.

The family nest of the Golitsyns and then the Yusupovs, created at the beginning of the 18th century, is still one of the most beautiful palace and park ensembles in the capital and its environs. According to Herzen, here people were able to humanize nature and create artistic beauty out of natural beauty.

Today, architectural masterpieces can be admired in the form they were 2 centuries ago. Experienced tourists are advised to visit the museum-estate for the first time as part of an excursion. Professional guides will not only tell you about the Grand Palace and the Church of the Archangel Michael, but also reveal unknown pages of history and tell you about the local ghost – the ghost of Yusupov's daughter.

Attention! The area of the palace complex is 800 hectares. Therefore, when planning a trip to Arkhangelskoye, stock up on time and a basket of provisions.

Manor Vorontsovo

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

Already in the XIV century, in the south-west of the city, there was a manor belonging to the family of the boyar Vorontsov. In 1451, vast lands became part of the royal patrimony and became the property of the heir Ivan III.

Over the centuries, ownership has changed several owners. In the 20s of the last century Vorontsovo came under nationalization and was used as a biological station, and later as a pig farm.

The estate celebrated its revival in the 1990s. After reconstruction, visitors are greeted by the oldest monument of architecture – the Gothic entrance gate.

Ancient alleys, preserved from tsarist times, lead to a cascade of five ponds. On the way to them, guests of the park will meet the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity and the worship cross. In addition to historical buildings, an area of 40.7 hectares comfortably accommodates a zone of children's attractions, green labyrinths and a corner of the Celestial Empire – a small landscape park with a stylized pagoda.

Hermitage Garden

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

In the 19th century, the Hermitage Garden was located on Bozhedomka and was the first entertainment area in the capital. Connoisseurs of architectural monuments are invited to take a walk in the garden, the creation of which dates back to the 18th century. Prince Golitsyn, who owns the estate on Staraya Basmannaya, presented the city with an invaluable gift – a personal plot adjacent to the house. At the end of the century, the estates of the landlords Chulkov-Rastopchin, Levashov and Stakheev were added to the magnificent public garden.

Shady alleys framed by centuries-old lindens and poplars, and the Belvedere grotto have been preserved from the old layout in the park. In the Soviet pre-war period, a summer stage appeared – the only concert venue of the 20s of the last century that has survived in Moscow.

On the stage of the building, shaped like a shell, Utyosov sang and filmed episodes of the film “Pokrovsky Gates”. Now artists perform on the restored stage, festivals and dance master classes are held. A summer cinema, cafe, children's and sports zones are available to the guests of the park.

Friendship Park

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

The general idea was to open a well-maintained recreation area in honor of the VI World Festival of Youth and Students held in Moscow in 1957. The layout of the territory repeated the symbolism of the festival in the form of a five-petalled flower, which means friendship between the peoples of five continents. The place for the square was chosen in the Levoberezhny district of the Northern Administrative District of Moscow.

The zone for rest and walks of the townspeople is limited from the west by the Leningrad highway, and from the north by Festivalnaya street. When landscaping the park complex, landscape architects tried to preserve the terrain and the banks of the Moscow Canal around the Northern River Station as much as possible. The square was solemnly founded on August 1, 1957 by a group of delegates of the VI World Festival of Youth and Students.

The infrastructure for a comfortable and safe family vacation was created on the territory of the complex. Children's and sports grounds have appeared here, there are several ponds, where several species of waterfowl migratory birds live in summer.

In summer, there is an entertainment complex with attractions for children and adults, and those who wish can use the services of renting bicycles and velomobiles. In winter, the townspeople fill the ice rink, and the children enjoy riding the big hill.

In the center of the forest park is the building of the Northern River Station. Upon completion of construction and commissioning of the Moscow Canal in the former territory of the village of Nikolskoye in 1938, the park of the Northern River Station was laid out.

For all the time of its existence, the garden and park complex has been repeatedly rebuilt. Its last reconstruction was completed by the City Day in 2020. Improvement measures touched the square and the embankment of the river station. In the recreation area, 11 children's and sports grounds were organized. A large children's play area (900 sq. m.) was built based on the Soviet comedy Volga-Volga. The highlight of the site was an attraction stylized as the Sevryuga multi-deck steamer from the film.

Several sculptures from the Stalinist period of Soviet rule have been preserved on the territory. The sculpture “Waterway” is installed on the square in front of the station building. The figure of a girl on a high pedestal holds stylized waves with a sailboat in her raised hands. In the northern part of the square, visitors can see a sculptural group of three figures (two girls and a guy) of basketball players.

Here you can see Winnie the Pooh, Emelya on the stove, Baba Yaga, etc. The Brothers Grimm cafe is especially popular, designed for families with children. The park and palace complex gained European fame already in the 18th century. The estate that passed into the hands of the young Count Sheremetev, as a dowry of his wife, the daughter of Prince Cherkassky, began to gradually acquire features that have survived to this day.

The territory is a well-groomed forest area, which is crossed by many pedestrian alleys. The most beautiful of them are Ostankinskaya, Palace and Linden alleys. During the ownership of the estate by the Moscow Governor-General A.A. Zakrevsky, he built a beautiful mansion and erected a monument to the heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812, in which the general himself was a participant.

The picturesque famous Dutch ponds and an octagonal non-working pumping fountain called Octagon have survived here to our times. In the garden you can find lilac bushes of such varieties as “Beauty Moscow”, “Alexey Maresyev”, “Hydrangea, “Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya”, as well as “India”, “Moscow Morning”, “Moscow Lights” and many other types of plants.

Dubki Park

30 best Moscow parks for walking - photo with names and description, map

In the north of the capital, in the Timiryazevsky district of the Northern Administrative District, there is the Dubki park. Since 2021, Dubki has been under the jurisdiction of the main architectural department of the Poklonnaya Gora complex. The recreation area occupies the territory between Nemchinova, Ivanovskaya and Dubki streets. You can get here by reaching the Dmitry Donskoy Boulevard station by tram number 27, buses 22, 319, 72 and 82.

In 1861, the oak grove near the Petrovsky-Razumovskaya estate was acquired by the Agricultural and Forestry Academy. The surrounding lands began to be leased to Muscovites as dachas. The resulting settlement was named Solomenskaya Gatehouse. The oak grove was supposed to be made the territory of the capital's zoo, but due to the then remoteness from the city, this idea was forgotten.

Only after the Great Patriotic War, the area acquired the status of a park called Dubki. At first, the recreation area was arranged spontaneously by local residents. Several times the oak forest was threatened by cutting down, but thanks to the efforts of local patriots, the grove was defended.

Today Dubki is a favorite place for city dwellers to walk. In 2019, Dubki were renovated under the My District program. Since the requests of the townspeople, the general redevelopment of the park has been abandoned, but only worn-out infrastructure facilities have been replaced. There were three children's playgrounds with rubber coating, three workout zones, a hockey rink with stands, and table tennis tables.

In the central part, the colonnade and rotunda, the main attractions of Dubki, were reconstructed. Paths made of patterned tiles were laid around the ponds, and a bicycle path was built.
