Some people prefer to choose very warm countries like India or Dubai in winter. Others go to conquer ski resorts. But this time is great for getting to know many countries. Georgia is one of them. I have collected the main reasons why going to Sakartvelo in winter is a great decision.
Ski resorts
Let's start with this reason, since many countries do not have natural huge peaks. There are two famous resorts in Georgia: Gudauri and Bakuriani. But in recent years, new ones have opened: Hatsvali, Tetnuldi and Goderdzi. While the former will probably be met with crowds of tourists, the latter will not yet see them. But their infrastructure is also the most necessary.
As for prices, a ski pass will cost from 25 to 70 GEL depending on the resort. Please note that 1 lari is approximately equal to 1.2 BYN. Estimate prices in relation to the local currency – this, by the way, is another reason in favor of Georgia.
It is best to get to Gudauri and Bakuriani from Tbilisi. And it is optimal to get to Khatsvali, Tetnuldi and Goderdzi from Batumi or Kutaisi. You can take a Yandex or Bolt taxi. Another good option is to use the Gotrip service.

Warm winter
Those who like to escape from winter may also like Georgia. Yes, it won’t be hot here up to 30 degrees, but a comfortable 10-15 will do just fine. At night, of course, the thermometer drops. I was in Tbilisi in December. And in two weeks the weather was unpleasant only twice: rain and wind. The rest is dry and cozy. True, if you are going to the mountains, it will be winter weather.
Lack of tourists
This reason is one of my favorites. It’s very pleasant to be without crowds of people scurrying around everywhere, and to explore places popular with tourists is doubly so. This is a cool bonus during the non-tourist season.
In addition, during this period there is a chance to attend an individual excursion at a group price. For example , our company took a sightseeing walking tour of Tbilisi. And we were exclusively our mini-group. As a result, the time was even longer than indicated, and we took photos without haste.
New Year in Georgia
This reason may not be relevant now, but in the future it is an excellent option. By mid-December the cities are already sparkling. Illumination here is not only on the central streets, but also in various public gardens. Looks very nice. I would like such an atmosphere on our streets.
The central Christmas tree of Tbilisi is very beautiful. This is, of course, a relative concept. But the fact that it is the most expensive in Georgia is a fact. In 2022, $1 million was allocated for the green beauty. In 2023, everything cost $600 thousand.

This point is closely related to the previous one. Fair rows appear on December 13-14. And they start working on the day the lights on the main tree are lit. In 2023, this happened on December 15th.
Fairs here are held in the European manner and in a variety of locations: near shopping centers, in public gardens and on the streets where various establishments are concentrated. The range includes: souvenirs, handmade products from clothing to skincare products, as well as all kinds of street food. You can’t do without mulled wine, but the locals scold this drink and say that boiling wine means converting the product.
Entertainment options include street performances and concerts at special venues. They are not available at all fairs, but you can definitely find them at the main ones. Local bands perform there, performing songs in Georgian. In general, you will find the top best fairs here.

In winter, local stores have huge discounts. What's surprising? You can buy items from local designers and large well-known brands at good prices. And designer goods are presented here in very large quantities.
To be honest, the thought has crossed my mind more than once that it is possible to organize shopping tours in Georgia. By the way, sales are already running in many countries. Well, let me remind you here that outside the tourist season, the cost of housing decreases.
