🎄 Christmas markets in Europe: a guide to the best markets
The atmosphere on Christmas and New Year's Eve is considered the most magical of the year. It seems that every centimeter of air is saturated with miracles. Of course, a decorated city, pre-holiday bustle, and gifts help you believe in something incredible. But still, we create the atmosphere ourselves. And what, no matter how Christmas markets, organically complements the spirit of the holiday.
Deciding to bring a little more magic into life, I visited three New Year’s markets in different countries. The choice fell on cities whose fairs are rightfully recognized as one of the best in Europe.
Hungary, Budapest
I started my trip from the capital of Hungary – Buda Pest. To be honest, I didn’t expect that I would fall in love with this city from the first second. Visiting it during the holiday season was definitely the best decision. The city hosts several Christmas markets. The most popular of them are located in the city center, just a ten-minute walk from each other.
Vörösmarty Square
The fair at Vörösmarty Square particularly impressed me. But first I want to tell you a little about the square itself. Its history does not go back much: only more than 200 years. But during this period, it managed to become one of the most famous squares in the world and even changed its name as many as nine times! There are beautiful buildings around the perimeter of the square, a monument to the poet Michal Vörösmarty and a copy of an ancient fountain built in 1483.
But during Christmas, the square turns into the epicenter of the holiday. There are wooden houses where you can buy products from local artisans. Christmas tree decorations, dishes, accessories, nice little things for the home – with all this you can please yourself and your loved ones. Of course, the aromas of food will surround you at every step. Well, how can we resist here? Therefore, I advise you not to overeat before visiting the fair, because you still won’t be able to resist.
This year the fair on Vörösmarty Square will take place from November 17 to December 31. And believe me, there will be a lot of amazing things this year. After all, the fair has been updated.
Ferenc Deak Square
Not far from Vörösmarty Square, another fair will be held at Ferenc Deák Square. The atmosphere here is very similar to other venues, but what is surprising is the countless number of illuminations. The 500-meter-long street is illuminated by thousands of lights.
St. Stephen's Square
The fair on St. Stephen's Square, where the basilica of the same name is located, surprises with its light show. At the holiday market you can try Hungarian delicacies or traditional Christmas ones.
For example, lángos is a flatbread made from yeast dough, fried in oil. It is also worth paying attention to ceramic masterpieces by local craftsmen or buying a valuable designer gift. If it gets cold, of course, you can warm up with warm mulled wine made from red or white wine. And in the St. Stephen's Basilica itself, organ music concerts are held in the evenings, where you can enjoy the works of great composers. But you should take care of tickets in advance.
Austria Vienna
Following the charming Buda Pest, I went to Vienna to continue my fair tour. The capital of Austria is beautiful in any season. On the one hand, pompous, and on the other hand, sophisticated architecture, an atmosphere of wealth and luxury, famous local culinary masterpieces that are famous and loved far beyond the country’s borders. But in its festive decorations, Vienna is even more beautiful than usual. Of course, all this could not happen without fairs. I managed to visit three fairs, and I’ll tell you about them.
Stephansplatz Square
Usually there is a small fair on the square. But I can definitely call it one of the most comfortable. It is located next to St. Stephen's Cathedral or Stefansdom. This is a real calling card of the city, and perhaps the whole country. It is therefore not surprising that a fair near such a place has captured the hearts of many visitors and residents of Vienna.
Here, in addition to walking and contemplating the sights, you should definitely try punch with or without alcohol. By the way, speaking of intoxicating drinks. During my trip, mulled wine or other “Christmas” drinks were sold in mugs with the symbol of the year. A deposit was paid for each such dish. You can either give the cup and return the money, or just take it as a souvenir.
Karlsplatz Square
На этой площади проходит не совсем обычная ярмарка. И даже название у неё отличается от других. Называется она Художественный Адвент — предметы искусства и художественного промысла (Art Advent — Kunst & Handwerk am Karlsplatz). Здесь традиционно собираются художники, устраиваются мастер-классы. Помимо красиво украшенной площади, улицу покрывают сеном и устраивают “животный” детский сад из осликов и овец.
Ратушная площадь
А на этой площади проводится самая крупная ярмарка в Вене. Этот рынок носит название имя младенца Христа. Тут невероятно большой ассортимент ёлочных игрушек, оригинальных подарков и всего, чего душа пожелает. А ещё повсюду будут манить запахи горячих сосисок, выпечки, имбирных пряников и глинтвейна. Я же пробовала здесь карамелизированное яблоко… И моментально перенеслась в сказку.
Чехия, Прага
Последним пунктом моего рождественского путешествия стала невероятная Прага. До этого я посещала уже этот город не в канун Рождества. И хочу всем посоветовать хоть раз в жизни, но обязательно побывать здесь именно в декабре. Ярмарки Праги неизменно попадают в топ каждый год. А узнать больше о лучших ярмарках мира можно здесь.
В 2023 году самая первая ярмарка открылась на площади Мира 20 ноября. А самые известные рынки на Староместской и Вацлавской площадях откроются 2 декабря. О них я и расскажу подробнее.
Староместская площадь
Ярмарка на этой площади завораживает, как только попадаешь сюда. Настоящая атмосфера сказки! Здесь размещается множество деревянных шале, в которых можно найти ароматную выпечку, тёплые напитки, работы мастеров и многое другое. Конечно же, посередине площади, как королева, стоит виновница торжества — ёлка, украшенная и мерцающая. Повсюду праздничная суета и музыка. Например, в мой визит в Прагу вечером включили музыку из фильма “Один дома”. В сочетании со сверкающей елью и рождественской атмосферой я как будто и правда очутилась в этом фильме.
Вацлавская площадь
В этом году ярмарка будет находиться в нижней части Вацлавской площади. И проработает со 2 декабря по 6 января, что очень удивительно. Ведь большинство ярмарок прекращают свою работу в сочельник. Но этот рождественский рынок ориентирован больше на туристов. Помимо глинтвейна и сладостей, здесь можно найти изделия из стали и дерева.
Обязательно попробуйте трдельник — выпечка из дрожжевого теста, которая в процессе приготовления наматывается на вертел и выпекается на гриле. Сверху посыпают сахаром или орехами, я пробовала трдельник с нутеллой. Невероятно вкусно!

In general, Prague can be called a fair city. Of course, it’s worth visiting the main markets of the city, but I’m sure that the small markets dedicated to the holiday will be no less cozy and memorable.
