🎉 Portugal events calendar: top 15 festivals
Did you know that the famous Brazilian carnival originates from Portugal? Back in the 17th century, residents of South America noticed how fun the Portuguese celebrated Maslenitsa – with a costume parade with dancing and singing – and adopted this tradition.
And even though the local carnivals are not as publicized and crowded as the Brazilian ones, the atmosphere is no worse. Festive processions last a week. Walking around both large cities and small towns. The most famous is the carnival in Torres Vedras. Parties are also popular in Ovar, Estarrej, Lola, and Famalicao.
A series of mass celebrations occur in the summer. It seemed to me that the Portuguese were always partying. Festivals start in cities and flow into villages – one replaces the other.
Santo Antonio Festival
Where: in Lisbon
Saint Anthony is the patron saint of Lisbon because he was born in this city. The canonized preacher is responsible for marriage matters. Therefore, many Portuguese couples get married on the holiday. In the processions along Avenida da Liberdade you can see people in wedding dresses. If you don't have a soulmate yet, look in the crowd. For good luck in matters of the heart, it is customary to give peas and basil as a gift on this day.
There will also be a lot of fried sardines at the festival, as the time to catch this small fish begins in June.
Festival of Sant Joan
Where: in Porto
John the Baptist (Portuguese: São João) is considered the patron saint of Porto. The party in honor of this Christian saint was superimposed on the pagan solstice holiday. You won’t see bonfires in the center of the northern capital, but in villages, like here, it is customary to jump over the flames to cleanse yourself of sins and evil.
В Порту есть другая забавная традиция: бить прохожих по голове детским пищащим молоточком. Раньше в качестве орудия использовали лук-порей — думаю, им было больнее. Не нашла объяснения этому обычаю. Смею предположить: так избавляют от нечистых мыслей.
К полночи вечеринка перетекает на набережную — там людей ждет фейерверк под музыкальное сопровождение. Потом толпа направляется на площадь Алиадуш, где до утра выступают музыкальные группы и диджеи.
Музыкальные фестивали
В июне в Португалии начинаются крутые музыкальные фестивали. Проводятся они в разных уголках страны. Я расскажу про несколько самых крупных.
В четырехдневном фестивале Primavera Sound в Порту принимают участие большое количество исполнителей. Среди самых ожидаемых в 2023 были группы Pet shop boys, Blur, New Order.
Июль в Лиссабоне проходит трехдневный опен-эйр NOS Alive с несколькими сценами и фуд-кортом. В 2022 году на нем выступила Metallica, в 2023-м — Red Hot Chili Peppers.
В середине месяца в лиссабонском Парке Наций пивной бренд проводит свой трехдневный фестиваль Super Bock Super Rock. Кстати, в 2023 его возглавил Offspring.
Затем музыкальную движуху продолжает город по другую сторону реки Дору — Вила-Нова-де-Гайя. Организатором Marés Vivas является мобильный оператор MEO. В 2023 году среди хедлайнеров — группа Black Eyed Peas.
Средневековый рынок

В маленьком городке, окруженном тысячелетней стеной, ежегодно проходит три больших фестиваля: Рождественский, Шоколадный и Средневековый. Последний считается уникальным. Сотни актеров, одетых в старинные наряды, бродят по улицам Обидуша. На прилавках вдоль замка продают изделия местных ремесленников. В заведениях устраивают ужины по средневековым традициям.

Праздник Богоматери Агонии
Где: в Виана-ду-Каштелу
В городке у океана на севере Португалии стоит церковь Богоматери Агонии, к которой с 17 века люди устраивают паломничество. Путешествие в Виана-ду-Каштелу впоследствии превратилось в большой праздник.
Здесь можно будет увидеть колонну барабанщиков, шествие людей с большими кукольными головами, а также историко-этнографический парад, в котором участвуют более 3 тысяч статистов в португальских костюмах. Кульминацией фестиваля является процессия женщин в нарядах, типичных для города Виана-ду-Каштелу, сверху которых дамы надевают множество золотых украшений. Слышала, что некоторые участники этого шествия выходят на него с охраной.
Ярмарка Сан-Матеуш

The roots of this fair go back to the 14th century. During this time, the dates and formats of the event changed many times. In recent years, it has become one of the longest celebrations in the country.
Since the opening of the fair, concerts have been held in the city every day – some free, others paid. On the festival grounds there is an amusement park, food courts and the fair area itself, where you can buy everything from souvenirs to cars. On St. Matthew's Day the festival closes and ends with fireworks.
Grape harvest
Where: Many wineries in Portugal
When: end of September – beginning of October
I recommend going to Vindima, as this celebration is called, in the Douro region. Its picturesque hills with vineyards will definitely not leave you indifferent. Choose your favorite winery – there are more than a dozen in the area – and enjoy its atmosphere.
At the plantation you will be greeted at home. They will tell you about the process of wine production, offer to take part in the harvest or even crush it with your bare feet in a vat. And what kind of photos will you get among the bushes with fiery leaves and clusters of juicy fruits! A mandatory attribute of this program is wine tasting.
Chestnut Festival
Where: Marvão village and other places in Portugal
When: November 11
The chestnut harvest season begins at the end of October. Since then, there have been more smoking carts with fried fruits on the city streets. But the chestnut holiday itself is celebrated on November 11th.
“On St. Martin's Day, they eat chestnuts and taste wine,” as they say in Portugal. Let me note that we are talking about young wine – verde (green), which ripens at the beginning of November.
The village of Marvão, which is located near the Spanish border, is the main festive area. It was here that Saint Martin covered the poor man with his cloak and promised that the sun would come out. Elsewhere in the Alentejo region there are also colorful parties with music, dancing and dishes with chestnuts.
In winter, Christmas markets are held in Portugal – the most famous of them takes place in Óbidos. The next grandiose event is considered to be the meeting of spring – the Portuguese carnival, which I talked about at the very beginning.
