Bonifacio, France
Bonifacio clings like a clam to the Corsican cliffs, and small ships enter its port through a narrow gap that looks like a pirate's lair. The yacht-filled harbor is surrounded by cafes, and at the top of the cliff is the fortified old town, overlooking Sardinia. Stroll through bastions and a labyrinth of tree-lined streets, look inside churches and walk along panoramic coastal paths.
Salerno, Italy
The dramatic history and scenery usually lure visitors from Salerno on shore excursions along the nearby, deep Amalfi Coast or to the volcano-ruined Roman city of Pompeii. Salerno is often overlooked. However, there is an interesting old town, a hilltop fortress, one of Italy's most beautiful medieval churches, and a 10th-century medical school. Several parks and Lungomare's elegant seaside promenade are ideal for lazy afternoons.
Haifa, Israel
This important seaport has recently expanded its cruise terminal. It is the starting point for visiting Jerusalem or Tel Aviv. True, hilly Haifa also has its charms. And the city center is within walking distance of the port, although the roads are steep. The prestigious German colony contrasts with the gritty old quarter. The highlight is the Bahai Gardens, which are impeccably beautiful and have stunning views of the city and bay.
Cadiz, Spain
