💻 Guide to getting a digital nomad visa in 2024

46

Just a few years ago, many travelers collected documents for a work or tourist visa. In 2024, digital nomad visas remain at the forefront. We tell you how to become a digital nomad, in which countries you can get such a visa and what its features are.

Who are “ digital nomads “?

Digital nomads emerged during the coronavirus pandemic. Companies began to switch to remote work, and their employees began to work from anywhere in the world. All they needed for this was a good laptop and high-speed Internet.

Nowadays, remote work has become an essential part of life. Digital nomads are employees who officially work remotely and can do so using the Internet.

Even during the pandemic, internet nomads could not stay and work abroad for long as tourists. The work visa option is not for them due to the need to enter into a contract or employment agreement with a local employer.

Digital visas have already become a pass to life, work and travel for many people.

What is a ” digital nomad visa “?

Digital nomad visa

– this is the legal right to be in a foreign country, but to work and earn income in a third country.

This is not just a visa, but a whole program for obtaining a residence permit. On average, states issue them for a period of one to two years. After the first year, in some countries the period of stay can be extended or even a residence permit can be issued for other reasons. Please note that an entry visa must be obtained separately.

The remote worker visa program has been a great help for many states in recovering losses when tourists and attractions stopped bringing money into the budget. It is much easier to draw up and receive such a document than to fight for a residence permit, permanent residence or citizenship.

Have you heard anything about the freelancer, self-employed or nomad visa? These are other names for the digital nomad visa. Remote workers may stay in the country more than tourists. They pay taxes and contribute to the economy, but do not take away local jobs. Both nomads and government authorities benefit from such a program.

We warn you right away that visas for freelancers and remote workers are an option not only for the IT sector. The main thing is to prove that you work with digital technologies. Let’s not deny that the opportunity to obtain such a visa is mainly used by IT specialists, and many companies are seeking to add another professional to their staff.

What is the difference between a visa for remote work and a Schengen or work visa?

  • Period of stay

You can stay in the EU with a Schengen tourist visa for only three months within six months. A digital visa gives the right to stay in the country for the entire period of validity.

  • Registration procedure

Getting a digital nomad visa is much easier than a work visa. Digital nomads are not required to enter into an employment contract with a local company and can continue to work for their organization.

How to get a digital nomad visa?

First, find out about countries with digital nomad visa programs. We recommend that you contact the Nomad List community with a rating of the best places in the world to live, work and travel for remote workers. It contains useful information on everything from the cost of living to the climate and weather of the region.

After that, check what documents you need to prepare to apply for a visa. All that remains is to wait for the authorities to approve the application, receive a passport with a visa and prepare for the long-awaited move to a new country.

Portugal

A special digital nomad visa in Portugal has been introduced since October 2022. Previously, freelancers applied for a D7 visa.

First, calculate whether you received €3,040 in each of the last three months.

Prepare documents on employment with a foreign employer and on the fulfillment of foreign orders. Don't forget to obtain a tax residence document in the country where you pay taxes. The authorities must be sure that you will not be left without a roof over your head. Both rented housing and your own are suitable for this. To find it, you can come to Portugal in person, view the selected options, or use rental sites. We advise you to look for portals that have the option to cancel your accommodation reservation.

Applicants initially receive a visa for four months. During this period, you need to come to the country and apply for a residence permit at the National Migration Service in Portugal (SEF). This rule also applies to family members. A digital nomad visa is issued as a permit for temporary stay of up to a year (Temporary Stay) or permanent residence for a period of a year or more (Residence Stay).

Prepare for long waiting periods : the time it takes to obtain a digital nomad entry visa depends on the country of application, and the Portuguese authorities consider an application for a residence permit for two months.

The main advantage of a digital nomad visa in Portugal is the opportunity to obtain a country passport after just five years of staying here with a residence permit. But first, you can choose ready-made travel tours.

Visa validity: one year.

Requirements: €3040 income (in each of the last three months), application, passport, two photographs, document of no criminal record, employment contract and confirmation of orders, document of tax residence, documents for housing, health insurance, payment of visa fee

How to submit documents: in person at the Portuguese Consulate or at the National Migration Service (SEF).
