Chora, Ornos or a wild beach: 20 Mykonos areas to stay in for 2027

Chora, Ornos or a wild beach: 20 Mykonos areas to stay in for 2027

On Mykonos, the area you stay in matters more than your hotel's star rating.

The island is small but hilly, the roads are narrow, and there are almost no pavements outside Chora. Taxis are scarce in summer, and they are expensive. A hotel that looks close to the beach or the town on the map can in reality mean a steep climb along a busy road. So you choose your base first and your room second.

The main question sounds simple: Chora or the beach. Chora gives you restaurants, bars, shops, buses and evenings without a car. The beach areas give you a morning swim on your doorstep, but every trip into town after dinner becomes a task of its own. If you are in doubt, go for Chora: getting to the beaches by day is easy, while getting back to a beach hotel at night is harder.

For a first trip we recommend three areas: Chora, Ornos or Platis Gialos. Families are most comfortable in Ornos, people go to Psarou for luxury, and Agios Ioannis with its sunsets over Delos suits couples. Those coming for the parties are better off staying in Chora, and moving out to Paradise, Paraga and Super Paradise beaches only for the club scene. Elia, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Panormos and Agios Sostis offer peace and quiet, but they are inconvenient without a car.

Below we go through twenty areas of the island. For each one you will find the character of the place, the transport, the honest catch and the hotels worth looking at first.

Where to stay in Mykonos: the short answer

💡 In short:

  • For a first trip, choose Chora, Ornos or Platis Gialos.
  • Families with small children are most comfortable in Ornos, with its sheltered bay and calm water.
  • For luxury and beach clubs go for Psarou, for sunsets and quiet go for Agios Ioannis.
  • Without a car, stay in Chora, Ornos or Platis Gialos, where there are buses and a water taxi.
  • Transport and timetables: 09/2026, checked 15.09.2026 on the official KTEL Mykonos bus website

Platis Gialos remains one of the most convenient beach bases on the island. Buses to Chora and the water taxi along the south coast leave from here.

Here is how the areas break down by type of trip. We have put them in one list so you can spot your option straight away.

  • Best overall and for a first trip: Chora. The best restaurants, nightlife, shops, buses and a holiday without a car. There is no good swimming beach in the centre.
  • For families: Ornos. A sheltered beach, calm water, restaurants, good hotels and frequent buses into town. In July and August it is crowded and expensive.
  • Best beach base: Platis Gialos. Excellent swimming, beach hotels, restaurants, buses and the handiest spot for hopping between the south coast beaches. In season the area is noisy and commercial.
  • For luxury: Psarou. A beautiful sheltered beach, the Mykonos Blu hotel, the Nammos club, designer boutiques and very high prices.
  • For couples and honeymoons: Agios Ioannis. Quieter, more romantic, with good swimming and sunsets looking out to Delos.
  • For nightlife: Chora. Stay at Paradise, Paraga or Super Paradise beach only if the beach clubs are the main reason for your trip.
  • For a quiet beach holiday: Elia, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Panormos and Agios Sostis. More space and less bustle, but inconvenient without a car or hotel transfers.

Before you book, keep five practical things in mind. They affect the trip more than it seems when you are choosing from photos.

  • Book early. The best hotels in Mykonos sell out long before the season. For June to September, start looking four to eight months ahead. If you need a sea view room, a family room, a private pool or a hotel on the beach in July and August, book as soon as your dates are known.
  • Don't count on taxis. There are few of them and they are expensive, especially at the airport, at the port, at the beaches and late in the evening. Use buses, the water taxi, hotel shuttles and transfers booked in advance. Uber helps, but it does not solve the island's transport problem.
  • Walking distances are deceptive. The island is hilly, the roads are narrow, and pavements are rare. Check the actual walking route from the hotel before you pay.
  • Know your port. Ferries arrive at the New Port in Tourlos, while the Old Port by Chora serves the boats to Delos and excursions.
  • The wind matters. In summer, especially in July and August, the meltemi blows. The south coast beaches are more reliable for a classic beach day, while the northern ones are exposed to the wind.

How Mykonos is laid out

Chora lies on the west coast. The airport is slightly inland, and the New Port in Tourlos is about two kilometres north of the town (by the map). The most convenient beach areas are south of Chora: Ornos, Psarou and Platis Gialos.

The further east or north you go, the quieter Mykonos becomes. But your dependence on a car, a hotel shuttle or a transfer grows too. For a first trip, stick to the western part of the island and the south coast.

Aerial view of Mykonos with white houses and the sea

The lanes of Chora are fun to explore even for the tenth time. This is where the island's evening life is concentrated, which is why the distance from your hotel to the town matters so much.

It helps to picture the island as three belts. The west, with Chora, the ports and Agios Ioannis, gives you services and transport. The south, with Ornos, Platis Gialos, Psarou and the club beaches, gives you swimming and beach life. The east and north, with Ano Mera, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis and Panormos, give you space and quiet, but all but require a car.

The airport and the ports: what's the difference

  • Mykonos Airport: it sits not far from Chora. In season the taxi queues can be long, so book a transfer in advance if you are flying with children, with a lot of luggage, late in the evening, or staying outside the town.
  • The New Port in Tourlos: ferries arrive here and depart from here. Don't count on walking from the ferry to your hotel, especially with suitcases.
  • The Old Port: on the edge of Chora. Boats to Delos and excursions leave from here, and the Old Port bus station and the SeaBus pier are next to it.
  • SeaBus: a boat between the New Port and the Old Port. It runs every 30 minutes, the ride costs 2.50 € per person, and the season lasts from April to the end of October (as of 09/2026, official SeaBus website). This is a port link, not an island shuttle.
  • The beach water taxi: a seasonal boat, not a transfer from the port. It links Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia. It is especially handy if you are staying in Ornos or Platis Gialos.

The best hotels in Mykonos by type of trip

A room with its own pool at Cavo Tagoo, just north of Chora. Rooms with a private pool are the first to go in peak season, so look at them early.

If you have already chosen your area, start with the hotels that make the shortlist most often. We have grouped them by type of trip.

  • Luxury: Kalesma, Santa Marina, Deos, Cali Mykonos, Mykonos Blu.
  • Boutique hotels: Bill & Coo, Semeli, Branco, Bluetopia Suites.
  • For couples: Kalesma, Bill & Coo, Katikies, Cali Mykonos, Cavo Tagoo.
  • Beach hotels: Santa Marina, Mykonos Blu, Branco, Mykonos Blanc, Petasos Beach Resort & Spa.
  • For families: Santa Marina, Mykonos Blanc, Myconian Villa Collection, Mykonos Blu, Petasos Beach Resort & Spa.
  • Close to the nightlife: Semeli, Mykonos Theoxenia, Tropicana.
  • Best value: Panormos Village, Palladium, Andronikos, Acrogiali Beach Hotel.
  • With private pools: Kalesma, Deos, Cali Mykonos.
  • For a quiet stay: Semeli Coast, Cali Mykonos, The Wild.

If you want one hotel for the whole island, start with Kalesma or Santa Marina. Both cover almost any scenario, from a honeymoon to a family trip.

The pools at Mykonos Blu look straight out over Psarou beach. The hotel sits on one of the most sheltered bays on the island, so the water below it is calm most of the time.

Deos is the choice of those who want to stay above Chora rather than in its lanes. The hotel sits in the hills above the town, so you will need a short ride to reach Chora's restaurants.

Petasos Beach Resort & Spa is in Platis Gialos and is considered one of the best options for families in this area. A sandy beach, restaurants and the bus into town are close by.

Mykonos Blanc is on Ornos beach. The calm bay next to it makes it one of the most family-friendly hotels on the south coast.

Katikies sits next to Agios Ioannis beach on the west coast. It is chosen by couples who care about the sunset over Delos and quiet evenings.

Mykonos Riviera is in Tourlos, by the New Port. It is a lifesaver for short stopovers and early ferries, and you can get to Chora on the SeaBus.

Next we look at the main choice of the trip: staying in town or by the sea.

Chora or the beach: what to choose for a first trip

For most travellers this is the real choice. Stay in Chora if restaurants, bars, shops, nightlife, buses and easy evenings matter to you. Stay by the beach if swimming, sunbeds and a resort-style day mean more than late nights out in town.

Chora gives you classic Mykonos. You can walk to Little Venice, the windmills, the Old Port, restaurants, boutiques, bakeries, cocktail bars and clubs. The town remains the island's main transport hub, so getting around the beaches is easier from here. The price of this convenience: noise, crowds, high prices, suitcases on cobbled lanes and no proper beach in the centre.

Want Chora, but with some quiet in reserve? Look at hotels on the edge of town, by the Old Port, in the hills above the centre or towards Megali Ammos. There the evening town stays close, and you sleep more peacefully.

Ornos and Platis Gialos suit most people who choose the beach. Both areas have good swimming, restaurants, hotels, buses to Chora and the seasonal water taxi to the south coast beaches. Ornos is especially convenient for families and for those who want a practical beach village close to town. Platis Gialos feels more like a resort, and it is the easiest place from which to reach Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia.

Psarou is chosen for luxury. The water is calm, there are designer boutiques nearby, the sunbeds are expensive, and the Nammos club sets the scene. For a lavish Mykonos it is an excellent spot, but you could not call it good value, and there is no water taxi directly from Psarou.

Paradise, Super Paradise and Paraga are made for beach clubs. Here you get DJs, music and a loud scene. It is fun, but it is only worth staying there if the parties are the main reason for your trip.

For quiet, look at Agios Ioannis with its sunsets and romantic west coast. Elia offers a long beach and upmarket resorts. Tourlos and Agios Stefanos are convenient if being close to the ferry port matters to you.

You can walk along the shore between Platis Gialos and Paraga. That way you link a calm beach base with the club scene of the neighbouring beach without a taxi.

A short table will help you compare the main options. It is put together from the area descriptions below.

Areas with restaurants and bars close by

Chora is unbeatable if you want to walk everywhere. No beach area compares with it for restaurants, bars, boutiques, bakeries, galleries, clubs and night-time energy. Stay here if you want to step out after sunset and have the island's best evening scene right at your door.

The catch follows from the upside: everyone wants to be here. In July and August the town is crowded, expensive and noisy in the most central lanes. If you are a light sleeper, avoid rooms above bars and deep in the pedestrian zone.

Ornos and Platis Gialos offer the best beach alternative. Both areas have enough restaurants, beach bars, mini markets and hotels that you don't need to go into town every evening.

Tourlos works well for a short stopover and island hopping. From here it is a stone's throw to the ferry port, Agios Stefanos beach and the boat to Chora. Mykonos Riviera is considered the best hotel in the area, and prices at Mykonos Riviera on Trip.com are worth checking in advance if your ferry leaves early in the morning.

The best areas of Mykonos for families

Mykonos has a reputation as a party island, but families have a great time here if they choose the right base. Look at five things: calm water, restaurants nearby, short walks, room size and a hotel you don't constantly need to call a taxi from.

Ornos remains our first choice for families, especially with small children. The bay is sheltered from the wind, the water is usually calm, and the restaurants, mini markets, beach clubs and hotels sit close together. In summer it is crowded here, and the sunbeds are not cheap. But the convenience outweighs that.

In Ornos the strongest options are Santa Marina, Mykonos Blanc and Kivotos Mykonos. For a family that wants a large resort on the shore, Santa Marina comes first: see rooms at Santa Marina on Trip.com.

Breakfast right by the beach at Mykonos Blanc. A buffet at the water's edge is especially valued by families who don't feel like going anywhere in the morning.

Platis Gialos is an excellent family base too. The beach is sandy and well equipped, swimming is easy, and the choice of waterfront restaurants is wider than in most beach areas. The area is livelier and more commercial than many guests expect. Then again, that is exactly why everything is close at hand here.

Petasos Beach Resort & Spa is considered one of the best family options in Platis Gialos. Branco Mykonos will suit families who want a stylish beach hotel.

Agios Ioannis is better for families who want a quiet beach and sunsets. The atmosphere here is calmer than in Ornos or Platis Gialos. But there are fewer restaurants, and there is almost nothing to do within walking distance. The area's main hotel is Mykonos Grand.

From a helicopter tour you can see the whole island. From above it is clear just how far apart Chora, the southern beaches and the east coast lie.

Agios Stefanos, Kalo Livadi and Elia also suit families, especially with a rental car or a resort hotel. Agios Stefanos is convenient for the New Port, and the beach there is calm. Kalo Livadi has more space. Elia has strong resorts, including Myconian Villa Collection, but it is a long way from Chora, and you cannot do without transfers.

Book family rooms early, especially for July and August. There are plenty of hotels on Mykonos, but noticeably fewer rooms where a family is truly comfortable. If you need two bedrooms or connecting rooms, make that the first thing you look for.

Petinos Beach Hotel is on Platis Gialos beach. It is another option for a family that wants to step out of the room straight to the sea.

Areas of Mykonos for couples and honeymoons

For couples, the best area depends on the style of the trip. Mykonos can be romantic in very different ways: sunset cocktails in town, a suite with a private pool above the sea, a quiet beach in the west, or a polished beach scene with luxury.

Chora and Little Venice suit couples who want atmosphere. Strolling through the lanes, sunset cocktails by Little Venice and dinner without a thought about transport are a big advantage. There is no seclusion here, and it can get cramped at sunset. But the setting remains classic Mykonos.

In Little Venice, Bluetopia is considered a special choice. Semeli Hotel and Cavo Tagoo Mykonos will suit you if you want style, a pool and an easy trip into town. For a short romantic stay in the centre, check available dates at Bluetopia on Trip.com.

Agios Ioannis is better for couples looking for sunsets and quiet. The atmosphere here is relaxed, the swimming is good, and the view looks out to Delos. In exchange you get fewer restaurants and almost no nightlife within walking distance. The first places we would look at are Mykonos Grand, Katikies Mykonos and Anax Resort & Spa.

Psarou is for couples who want luxury and a beach club. It is glamorous, expensive and very Mykonos. Mykonos Blu on this beach is superb. Elia suits you if you want a long beach and resort privacy, with the hotels Myconian Utopia Resort and Myconian Avaton.

Kalafatis is the furthest out, but Cali Mykonos is a great fit for couples who value seclusion, a striking pool and quiet luxury. Be prepared for a drive to Chora from here.

For a honeymoon, choose the room as carefully as the area. A good terrace, a sea view, a private pool or an outdoor hot tub can mean more than five minutes saved on the way into town. Mykonos is expensive enough that the room should feel special.

The huge pool and small private beach of the Cali hotel in Kalafatis. This format is chosen by couples who are not planning to go into town every evening.

Areas for nightlife and parties

For nightlife, Chora suits most people. It has the widest choice of bars, clubs, late-night lounges, restaurants and places for simple people-watching. All of it is within walking distance. That matters, because taxis are scarce at night, and they are expensive.

Want to go out but still get some sleep? Choose a hotel on the edge of town rather than above the busiest lanes. Belvedere and Semeli Hotel are good fits. Cavo Tagoo is more of a scene hotel: big views, a famous pool and a short ride or walk into town.

Paradise beach is chosen for full-on club life. Paradise Beach Club, Tropicana and Cavo Paradiso make this area one of the loudest and most party-driven on the island. Tropicana Hotel is the obvious pick if you want to stay in the thick of it. Paradise View Hotel offers a more affordable option nearby, and Paradise Beach Camping suits those coming for the parties on a small budget.

Friends having fun in a nightclub under yellow light

Tropicana Hotel on Paradise beach is among the best hotels in Mykonos for partying. Prices at Tropicana Hotel on Trip.com are handy to check before you plan your nights out.

Super Paradise offers a slightly more polished beach party. Super Paradise Beach Club and JackieO' draw a lively, stylish and LGBTQ+ friendly crowd. The beach is more isolated than Paradise, so it is worth staying here if the club scene is the whole point of the trip. The area's best-known hotel is LYO Boutique.

Paraga will suit you if you want Scorpios, SantAnna and a more fashionable club scene. At the same time, it is easier from here to reach Platis Gialos and the south coast water taxi. Paraga is lively, but not as one-note as Paradise. A practical option nearby is Zephyros Hotel.

Platis Gialos offers a sensible compromise: the beach by day, the water taxi to the club beaches, and a bus or transfer into town in the evening.

Chora: staying in the island's main town

The snow-white church of Panagia Paraportiani in Chora© Zde · CC BY-SAPhoto: Zde, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia Commons

The old town is a maze of whitewashed pedestrian lanes. Packed into them are small hotels, guesthouses, boutiques, bars, bakeries, gyros shops, jewellers and restaurants. Walking around here is a real pleasure, and getting a little lost is part of the fun.

Little Venice and the windmills remain the classic sunset spots. In July and August both places can be packed. See them early in the morning, and come back for sunset only if you have a table booked.

Chora's main advantage is logistics. You can walk to dinner, the bars, the Old Port, Little Venice, the windmills and most of the nightlife. Both of the island's main bus stations are close by.

  • Fabrika on the south side of town: buses to Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paradise, Paraga and the airport.
  • Old Port station: buses to the New Port, Agios Stefanos, Ano Mera, Elia, Kalafatis and Panormos.

Timetables change over the year and become much more frequent in summer (as of 09/2026, official KTEL Mykonos website). Check the current services before every trip.

The catches are clear too. Chora is crowded, expensive and not on a good swimming beach. Hotels in the old town are convenient but can be noisy, especially near the bars and the late-night flow of people. Staying deep in the pedestrian maze means dragging your suitcases over uneven lanes and steps.

If you want sleep, views and an easy trip into the centre, look for somewhere just outside it: above the Old Port, by Megali Ammos or on the quiet outskirts towards Fabrika. If you want the beach every day, though, Platis Gialos or Ornos will suit you better.

  • Who it's for: a first trip, a short stopover, restaurants, nightlife, shopping, a trip without a car, buses and ferries close by.
  • Not for: a beach holiday, light sleepers in the very centre, heavy luggage and hunting for good value in high season.
  • The catch: there is no swimming beach in the centre, and in July and August the lanes are noisy until late at night.

The best hotels in Chora

  • Deos
  • Semeli Hotel Mykonos
  • Vencia Boutique Hotel
  • Bluetopia Suites
  • Cavo Tagoo
  • Lovia
  • Belvedere Hotel
  • Andronikos Hotel
  • Theoxenia Boutique Hotel
  • Kouros Hotel & Suites

Andronikos Hotel is also on the list of best value hotels, so for a first trip to the town on a sensible budget, start with it: see prices at Andronikos Hotel.

Megali Ammos: a beach a step away from Chora

Megali Ammos remains the closest real beach to Chora. It suits you if you want to stay close to the action without sleeping in the thick of it. The beach lies about 500 m south of the town (by the map). From here you can walk to the windmills, Little Venice, the Fabrika bus station, restaurants, bars and shops, yet there is more space and more sea view here than in the old town.

A white lane in Chora, Mykonos, with bougainvillea© Warren LeMay from Chicago, IL, United States · CC BY-SAPhoto: Warren LeMay from Chicago, IL, United States, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0), Wikimedia Commons

The beach itself is sandy, calm in atmosphere and good for swimming, especially in still weather. It is not a polished club scene like Platis Gialos, Psarou or Paradise, and that is part of its appeal. Fewer sunbeds, fewer people, a more relaxed mood. The sunsets are beautiful, especially from the terraces of the hotels and tavernas above the beach.

The main trade-off here is the wind. Megali Ammos faces west and gets rough when the meltemi blows, and in July and August that is a regular occurrence. On windy days the beach feels exposed, and swimming may not be much fun. Families with small children and those who need a reliable beach day every day will be more at ease in Ornos or Platis Gialos.

The walk to Chora is short but not ideal. Part of the route has no proper pavement, and cars pass close by, especially after sunset. Most guests manage, but we would not recommend this area to people with limited mobility or to those who dislike walking along roads. Taxis are unreliable for such short trips in summer.

  • Who it's for: sunsets, quiet accommodation close to Chora, dinner and nightlife on foot.
  • Not for: beach days in the windy season, small children and calm water, limited mobility, a full set of beach clubs.
  • The catch: when the meltemi blows the west-facing beach gets rough, and part of the road into town has no pavement.

Ornos: a family beach village near town

Ornos is among the best all-round areas of Mykonos. It is especially good for families, couples and a first trip, when you want a real beach but don't want to feel cut off from Chora. The area lies about three kilometres south of the town (by the map). Chora is easy to reach by bus or transfer, and there are enough restaurants, beach clubs, cafés, bakeries and hotels here to make up a small resort village of its own.

The beach lies in a sheltered bay, the sand is soft, and the water is calm and shallow. This is one of the most family-friendly beaches on the island, and swimming here is far easier than on the windy western beaches. The catch is that Ornos has long ceased to be a secret. In July and August the sand is densely packed with sunbeds, prices are high, and the waterfront looks very busy from late morning until sunset. Book beach restaurants and good hotels in advance if you are travelling in high season.

Ornos is practical in a way many Mykonos beaches are not. In summer, buses from Chora run here frequently. It is also the main western starting point of the water taxi to Elia, with stops at Platis Gialos, Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise and Agrari.

The first boat leaves Ornos at 10:00, and the ticket is sold only as a day pass for 20 € per person, with unlimited boardings (as of 09/2026, official Mykonos Sea Transfer website). The water taxi remains the simplest and most pleasant way to get around the south coast beaches. But it is seasonal and runs most reliably from June to September. Don't build a tight connection with a ferry or a flight around it.

The food here is better than you might expect from such a busy beach. Several fish restaurants sit right on the sand or close to it, plus simple cafés and hotel restaurants around the bay. For a quiet dinner, walk along the eastern side of the bay to the small fishing harbour and the restaurant Apaggio, one of the quietest spots in the area.

A useful bonus of the area is Korfos beach, about five minutes' walk to the north. It is not comfortable for lying around, and the wind can be strong. But that is exactly why kitesurfers love it. There are far fewer people at Korfos than in Ornos, and it adds variety to the area.

  • Who it's for: families, couples, a first trip, calm swimming, beach hotels and frequent buses to Chora.
  • Not for: those looking for an empty beach, low prices, nightlife on the doorstep or the atmosphere of a traditional village.
  • The catch: in July and August the sunbeds are packed tightly together, and prices on the beach are high.

  • Santa Marina Resort & Villas
  • Mykonos Blanc
  • Kivotos Luxury Boutique Hotel
  • Kove
  • Myconian O

Platis Gialos: the best base for beach hopping

Aerial photo of Platis Gialos bay with the beach and the airport© Olaf Tausch · CC BYPhoto: Olaf Tausch, CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

Platis Gialos is among the best beach bases on Mykonos. We put it first for those who want sand, restaurants, hotels and simple transport. The area lies about four kilometres south of Chora (by the map) and looks more like a resort than Ornos. It has a long sandy beach, calm water, beach clubs, waterfront restaurants, water sports and plenty of hotels a couple of minutes from the sea.

The beach suits almost everyone. Families like the sheltered bay and shallow water. Couples appreciate the good hotels and dinner without a journey. Young travellers like the beach bars and being close to Psarou, Paraga, Paradise and Super Paradise. Platis Gialos itself is not a party beach, but it gives easy access to many clubs without making you sleep in the middle of them.

This is one of the most convenient beaches for a holiday without a car. In summer, buses run frequently between Platis Gialos and the Fabrika station in Chora. The beach is also the main water taxi stop, so it is easy to get around the south coast from here.

In high season the boats link Platis Gialos with Ornos, Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia, and the first one leaves from here at 10:20 (as of 09/2026, Mykonos Sea Transfer timetable). The timetable depends on the weather, so on a windy day check it at the pier.

There is no shortage of places to eat: from simple Greek tavernas and fish restaurants to the stylish cuisine of the beach clubs. The quality is good on the whole, but on the seafront in July and August prices can be steep, especially once sunbeds, drinks and a service charge are added. If you are watching your spending, compare menus before you sit down and ask directly about the minimum spend for sunbeds.

The catch here is the crowds. Platis Gialos is popular precisely because it really is convenient, and in season the beach is full from late morning until evening. Don't look for seclusion or old island atmosphere here.

  • Who it's for: families, couples, a first trip, beach hotels, a holiday without a car, water sports and hopping between the south coast beaches.
  • Not for: a budget holiday in high season, the search for quiet beaches and nightlife right outside the hotel.
  • The catch: from late morning until evening the beach is packed, and prices on the seafront are high.

The best hotels in Platis Gialos

  • Petasos Beach Resort & Spa
  • Branco Mykonos
  • Nissaki Boutique Hotel
  • Myconian Ambassador Hotel & Spa
  • Palladium Hotel
  • Petinos Beach Hotel

Agios Ioannis: sunsets and the quiet west coast

Agios Ioannis is among the best areas of Mykonos for those who want sunsets, a calm beach and more romance than in Ornos or Platis Gialos. The area lies on the west coast opposite Delos. It has a narrow sandy beach, clear water, several strong hotels and some of the most beautiful evening light on the island.

There is no big resort here. The beach is smaller and quieter, there are fewer restaurants, and there is less bustle than on the south coast. That is the point. Agios Ioannis suits couples, honeymooners and those who want a beautiful base without a long strip of bars, shops and clubs outside the hotel door.

The beach is a narrow crescent with umbrellas and sunbeds in season and free sand at the edges when there are not many people. The swimming is usually good, but conditions depend on the wind. Scenes from the film "Shirley Valentine" were shot here, and at sunset the place still has a special mood.

The beach's best-known restaurant is Hippie Fish. People go there for seafood, cocktails and dinner at sunset. It won't be cheap, and some reviews say the place is overrated, but for a sunset dinner it remains the main address on the beach. In high season, book a table in advance.

In summer, buses run between Chora and Agios Ioannis, usually via Ornos, but less often than on the main routes to Platis Gialos and Ornos. In July and August taxis are hard to find at night, so work out your way back before dinner rather than hoping a car will turn up on its own. A rental car is useful here if you want to get around the island's beaches and villages, although parking by the beach is limited at peak hours.

  • Who it's for: couples, honeymooners, sunsets, a quiet beach holiday, boutique hotels and travellers with a rental car.
  • Not for: nightlife, a wide choice of restaurants, frequent buses, beach club energy and walks on level ground.
  • The catch: buses run less often than to Ornos and Platis Gialos, and at night it is almost impossible to get a taxi.

Agios Stefanos: a beach next to the ferry port

Agios Stefanos remains the most convenient beach area for the New Port in Tourlos, where all Mykonos ferries arrive and depart. The area lies just north of the port and about three kilometres from Chora (by the map). It is a practical base for a short stopover, a ferry connection and for those who want a calm beach not far from town.

The beach is small, sandy and sheltered. The water is usually calm, and there is room both for sunbeds and for a towel right on the sand. This is not the most striking or the most fashionable beach on Mykonos, and it has none of the polished club energy of Platis Gialos or Ornos. But swimming is easy, and there is far less bustle than on the southern beaches. In July and August that counts for a lot.

The main reason to choose Agios Stefanos is transport. Summer buses link the area with the Old Port station in Chora, and the ferries are a stone's throw away. The SeaBus runs between the New Port in Tourlos and the Old Port in Chora, every 30 minutes for 2.50 € (as of 09/2026, SeaBus timetable and fares). It is a cheap way to avoid paying for a taxi into town.

Bear in mind that the SeaBus connects the port and the town, and does not drop you right at Agios Stefanos beach. If your hotel is on a hill or you have luggage, plan the last stretch in advance.

The base here is better than many expect, but it does not suit everyone. It has no choice of restaurants like Chora, no beach-hopping convenience like Platis Gialos, and none of the family resort mood of Ornos. Being close to the port is useful, but it also means you will see the traffic of ferries and cruise ships. For some guests that is a small price to pay for convenience. For others it makes the area seem less picturesque.

  • Who it's for: ferry connections, short stopovers, families, a calm beach holiday and accommodation close to the New Port.
  • Not for: nightlife, beach hopping, luxury beach clubs and the classic atmosphere of Chora.
  • The catch: the port is close by, so ferries and cruise ships remain part of the view.

Tourlos and the New Port: the night before the ferry

Tourlos is a practical port area between Chora and Agios Stefanos. It is not the prettiest place to stay on Mykonos. But the area is a real help for short stopovers, early ferries, late arrivals and multi-island itineraries. The New Port is here, and the SeaBus links it easily with the Old Port in Chora.

Don't confuse Tourlos with Chora. Some hotels are close to the port, but the walk from them into town is unpleasant, especially with luggage, in the heat, among cars or at night. If nightlife and strolls through the old lanes matter to you, stay in Chora. If your priority is a good hotel with simple ferry logistics and a quick trip into town by SeaBus or transfer, Tourlos makes sense.

  • Who it's for: ferry convenience, short stopovers, island hopping, a port view and a good hotel outside the centre.
  • Not for: the classic charm of Mykonos, a beach holiday and walking everywhere.
  • The catch: the walk to Chora is awkward, especially with luggage and in the dark.

The best hotel in Tourlos

The area's main hotel is Mykonos Riviera Hotel & Spa. It also made our shortlist for a short stopover by the port, and you will find the link to prices above, in the section on areas with restaurants close by.

Psarou: luxury, Nammos and a calm bay

Psarou bay with yachts and straw umbrellas© 7777777kz · CC BYPhoto: 7777777kz, CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

Psarou shows Mykonos at its most polished, expensive and see-and-be-seen. The beach is truly beautiful: a sheltered bay, soft sand, clear water and good swimming. But most guests come here for Nammos, the luxury beach club that made Psarou one of the most famous beaches in Greece.

This is not a laid-back beach village. Psarou is small, stylish and tightly organised. Rows of reserved sunbeds, expensive restaurants, service on the beach, the designer shops of Nammos Village, yachts offshore and prices that seem detached from ordinary Greek island life. If you want the full glamour of Mykonos, it is here. If you just want a swim and an inexpensive lunch, go somewhere else.

The water remains one of Psarou's main upsides. The bay is better sheltered from the wind than most beaches on the island, so swimming here is usually calm and comfortable. This attracts couples, honeymooners and families staying in the luxury hotels nearby.

But you should be careful about calling Psarou a "family" beach. The water suits children, that is true. The atmosphere and the prices, though, are more about a luxury club than a simple family day at the beach.

Transport is decent, but not straightforward. Buses from Chora go to Platis Gialos, and from there it is about a ten-minute walk to Psarou (by the map). If you are staying here and plan dinners in Chora, arrange transport in advance rather than improvising late in the evening.

We recommend staying at Psarou only if the beach club really is an important part of your trip. Otherwise go for Platis Gialos: the transport is simpler, there are more restaurants, and the prices are more reasonable. And walk over to Psarou for one lavish beach day.

  • Who it's for: luxury, Nammos, couples, expensive beach days and the polished Mykonos scene.
  • Not for: hunting for good value, a simple beach day, easy family logistics and a wide choice of restaurants.
  • The catch: there is no direct water taxi and no direct bus, and you have to walk to the stop in Platis Gialos.

Paraga: beach clubs next to Platis Gialos

Paraga is a lively south coast beach between the full-on party of Paradise and the resort polish of Platis Gialos. The beach is sandy, sociable and crowded in summer, with beach bars, a young crowd and music during the day. On the neighbouring headland stands Scorpios, with its upmarket sunset lounge scene that has become a Mykonos classic.

A short walk north across the headland brings you to the quieter Agia Anna beach, with a couple of good fish tavernas and a calm mood. In season there are buses from Chora, and Paraga is on the water taxi route. It is easy to combine with Platis Gialos, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia.

Stay here if Scorpios, SantAnna, beach clubs and easy trips along the south coast are part of your plan. Don't choose Paraga if you want quiet nights, a wide choice of restaurants or a family beach village.

  • Who it's for: beach clubs, Scorpios, young travellers and a quick trip to Platis Gialos and Paradise.
  • Not for: a quiet holiday, families with small children, hunting for good value and a wide choice of restaurants in the evening.
  • The catch: music and crowds during the day, and few restaurants for the evening.

The best hotel in Paraga

The area's main option is Agia Anna on the Beach, next to the quiet Agia Anna beach. It will suit you if you want to be close to the clubs but sleep slightly away from the noise.

Paradise: staying at the heart of the party

The sandy Paradise beach and a rocky headland with buildings© rene boulay · CC BY-SAPhoto: rene boulay, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

Paradise remains the classic party beach of Mykonos. It suits those who want beach bars, loud music, late nights and the clubs Paradise Beach Club, Tropicana and Cavo Paradiso close by. The beach itself is sandy, and you can swim there. But in season the atmosphere is more like a daytime party than a calm beach: the music builds after lunch and carries on through the night.

Don't choose Paradise for a quiet honeymoon, a family trip or a first visit, unless partying is the main goal. In season, buses link the beach with Chora, and the water taxi will easily take you to the neighbouring beaches: Paraga, Platis Gialos, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia.

  • Who it's for: parties, beach clubs, Cavo Paradiso, Tropicana and life in the thick of it.
  • Not for: families, a quiet holiday, a romantic trip and an ordinary beach break.
  • The catch: the music plays from lunchtime into the night, so getting a good night's sleep is hard.

Super Paradise: a stylish club bay

Panorama of Super Paradise bay with the beach and turquoise water© rene boulay · CC BY-SAPhoto: rene boulay, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

Super Paradise is a beautiful sheltered bay with clear water, steep hills all around and expensive villas on the slopes. In season the party here picks up from lunchtime and carries on through the night. The main beach club takes up most of the sand, while JackieO' at the opposite end adds a stylish, LGBTQ+ friendly energy and is among the best-known beach venues on the island.

Staying here is fun if you want beach parties on your doorstep. For quiet nights, walks and a choice of restaurants, the place does not work. Super Paradise is more isolated than Paradise, and if you are going anywhere else in the evening, you cannot do without transfers.

  • Who it's for: beach clubs, JackieO', a stylish party trip and those who know for certain that this is the scene they want.
  • Not for: a quiet holiday, families, dinners on foot and simple transport.
  • The catch: the area is isolated, and every evening outing requires a transfer.

  • Mykonos Flow

LYO Boutique remains the best-known hotel on the bay. Check prices at LYO Boutique on Trip.com if the Super Paradise club scene is the whole purpose of your trip.

Elia: space and resorts on the slopes

Elia beach with umbrellas and villas on the slopes

Elia is among the best beaches on Mykonos for space, good sand and a calm resort mood. You get here by the road through Ano Mera or by the seasonal water taxi from the south coast beaches. But Elia feels noticeably more remote than Platis Gialos or Ornos, so a rental car or a hotel transfer is useful here.

The beach has organised sunbeds, water sports, a beach restaurant open to the public and several luxury hotels on the surrounding hills. There is almost no village and almost no restaurants within walking distance. The western end of Elia has long been popular with gay travellers and those who like to sunbathe without clothes, although on the whole the beach is mixed and ordinary.

For a quieter swim, walk along the rocky path or drive to the neighbouring Agrari beach. It is smaller, calmer and less built up.

  • Who it's for: space, upmarket resorts, good sand, long beach days, a car or a hotel transfer.
  • Not for: nightlife, a choice of restaurants, a holiday without a car and quick trips to Chora.
  • The catch: it is a long way from Chora, and there are almost no restaurants around the beach.

Agrari: a quiet beach for confident swimmers

Agrari remains one of the quietest beaches on the south coast. It has golden sand, clear water and far less development than neighbouring Elia. The water gets deep fairly close to the shore, so the beach suits confident swimmers more than small children. There are few restaurants and no nightlife, and that is exactly why people love Agrari.

The sandy beach of Agrari with turquoise water and rocks© Warren LeMay from Chicago, IL, United States · CC BY-SAPhoto: Warren LeMay from Chicago, IL, United States, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0), Wikimedia Commons

There is no regular bus to Agrari. Stay here only if you have a rental car, hotel transfers, or you are happy with the seasonal water taxi and the rocky path from Elia.

  • Who it's for: a quiet beach holiday, swimming and a stay on a little-developed stretch of the south coast.
  • Not for: families with small children, nightlife, restaurants and a trip without a car.
  • The catch: the water gets deep quickly near the shore and there is no regular bus.

The best hotel in Agrari

The beach's main option is Sunrise Beach Hotel. It is worth taking the time to see rooms at Sunrise Beach Hotel in advance, because there are few options by this beach.

Kalo Livadi: long sands in the east

The sandy beach of Kalo Livadi with turquoise water© Olaf Tausch · CC BYPhoto: Olaf Tausch, CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

Kalo Livadi is among the best beach bases in the eastern part of the island. It suits those who want a long sandy beach and more space than on the packed south coast. There are several luxury hotels on the hills, and organised sunbed sections and beach clubs on the sand. But the beach is wide enough that it rarely feels as cramped as Psarou, Ornos or Platis Gialos.

The trade-off here is the location. You are staying beyond Ano Mera, far from Chora, and with a rental car things will be much easier than with the infrequent seasonal buses and hotel transfers. On windy days the beach is exposed to the wind. In calm weather, though, it is excellent for swimming, lounging and a relaxed beach holiday.

For a really quiet swim, walk south-east along the shore to the small Loulos beach. There are no facilities there, so bring water and shade with you.

A new Four Seasons hotel has opened nearby. There is not much guest experience of it yet, and the first reviews are only just starting to appear, so read recent guest opinions before you book.

  • Who it's for: long beach days, space, quiet luxury and travellers with a car.
  • Not for: nightlife, a trip without a car, a quick trip to Chora and a village outside the hotel gates.
  • The catch: the area is far from Chora, and in the wind the beach is exposed.

Kalafatis: wind, windsurfing and space

Kalafatis is a calm beach area in the east of Mykonos. It suits families, windsurfers and those who want a simpler island atmosphere. The long sandy beach has water sports, beach volleyball and tavernas, and there is enough room that it never gets as cramped as the famous beaches of the south.

It can be windy here. For windsurfing that is great, but for a lazy swim not so much. A rental car is highly advisable, because Kalafatis is far from Chora and public transport is limited. The luxury hotels and villas nearby can be superb, but as a base for nightly trips into town it is a poor choice.

  • Who it's for: space, water sports, families with a car and a quiet beach holiday.
  • Not for: nightlife, a first trip without a car and the polished beach club scene.
  • The catch: the wind gets in the way of a calm swim, and it is a long way from Chora.

The central square of Ano Mera village with white houses© Vanbasten 23 · CC BY-SAPhoto: Vanbasten 23, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

Ano Mera suits those who want village quiet, more reasonable prices and a quick drive to the eastern beaches. Several tavernas and cafés operate on the main square. The 16th-century monastery of Panagia Tourliani remains one of the most worthwhile non-beach stops on the island.

Buses link Ano Mera with Chora, and in season they continue on to Kalo Livadi and Kalafatis. But they are noticeably less useful than staying in Chora, Ornos or Platis Gialos. Choose Ano Mera only if you have a rental car or want a calm, low-key base away from the beach clubs.

  • Who it's for: reasonable prices, quiet, tavernas, trips by car and the eastern beaches.
  • Not for: nightlife, beaches on foot, a first trip without a car and sea views.
  • The catch: the sea is not close by, and without a car the base is inconvenient.

The best hotel in Ano Mera

The village's main option is Koukoumi Vegan Boutique Hotel. Check dates at Koukoumi Hotel if a calm village base suits you.

Panormos: the stylish north coast

Panormos is among the best beach areas on the north coast. It suits those who want space, good sand and a scene that is stylish but less hectic than in the south. The beach lies in a wide bay, so it is partly sheltered from the wind, although it is still windier here than in Ornos, Platis Gialos or Elia. Principote sets the upmarket beach club energy, while Kalosta is good for a relaxed lunch by the sand.

The sandy beach of Panormos by a rocky hill© Olaf Tausch · CC BYPhoto: Olaf Tausch, CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

Buses run here seasonally and less often than on the main beach routes. Staying here is much easier with a rental car. The view of the bay in the photo above is from Panormos Village.

  • Who it's for: a stylish stay in the north, space, beach views and travellers with a car.
  • Not for: windy days, a trip without a car, beach hopping and a first trip with simple logistics.
  • The catch: the north wind, and the buses run infrequently.

Agios Sostis: a natural beach with no facilities

A rocky shore with blue water and hills© Jules Verne Times Two · CC BY-SAPhoto: Jules Verne Times Two, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia Commons

Agios Sostis is among the most beautiful and natural beaches on Mykonos. It has soft sand, clear water and far fewer people than the organised beaches of the south. There are no real beach facilities, and that is the whole point. Bring water, shade and everything you will need for the day.

Above the beach is Kiki's Tavern, with simple grilled food. The queues there can be long, and tables are not bookable, so come early.

To stay here comfortably you need a car, a scooter or a quad bike. On windy days the beach feels exposed. Agios Sostis is good for a day trip or a quiet villa, but we would not recommend it to most guests on a first trip.

  • Who it's for: natural scenery, quiet, independent travellers and a holiday with a car.
  • Not for: simple logistics, beach clubs, buses, families who need facilities, and windy days.
  • The catch: there are no sunbeds and no shade on the beach, and you cannot get here without a car.

Aleomandra: villas opposite Delos

Aleomandra is a quiet peninsula of villas between Ornos and Agios Ioannis. People come here for privacy, sea views and upmarket accommodation away from the crowds. It is one of the points on Mykonos closest to Delos, with several small sandy coves, including Glyfadi beach below Casa del Mar.

It is calm and scenic here, but almost nothing is within walking reach. A rental car or hotel transfer is important. Stay here for seclusion and luxury, not for beach bars, buses or village atmosphere.

  • Who it's for: privacy, villas, sea views, luxury, couples and families with a car.
  • Not for: dinners on foot, buses, nightlife and a first trip with simple beach and town logistics.
  • The catch: there is almost nothing around within walking distance, and without a car you are tied to transfers.

A white alley in Chora, Mykonos© Warren LeMay from Chicago, IL, United States · CC BY-SAPhoto: Warren LeMay from Chicago, IL, United States, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0), Wikimedia Commons

Merchia remains one of the most remote places to stay on Mykonos. The bay lies on the north-east coast, and there is almost no development around it. The beach is a mix of sand and pebbles, and the water gets deep quickly. There are no tavernas, beach clubs or organised facilities on the shore.

It is a beautiful choice for seclusion, reading, swimming and a holiday without plans. But without a car, getting to restaurants and sights is inconvenient. Stay here only if you want quiet and are happy to be far from the main Mykonos scene.

  • Who it's for: seclusion, remote luxury, quiet, reading and travellers with a car.
  • Not for: a first trip, nightlife, restaurants, beach clubs and simple logistics.
  • The catch: there are no tavernas and no facilities around, and every trip requires a car.

The best hotel in Merchia

The area's main hotel is Semeli Coast. It is also on our list of hotels for a quiet stay.

Semeli Coast is among the most secluded luxury resorts on the island. Compare the villas and suites at Semeli Coast if quiet matters more to you than being close to Chora.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Mykonos for the first time?

For a first trip, choose Chora, Ornos or Platis Gialos. Chora gives you restaurants, nightlife, buses and a holiday without a car, but there is no swimming beach in the centre. Ornos is the most convenient for families, while Platis Gialos is better for a beach holiday and trips along the south coast by water taxi.

Which should I choose: Chora or a beach area?

If evenings, restaurants and simple logistics without a car matter to you, stay in Chora. If swimming and a sunbed by the hotel come first, go for Ornos or Platis Gialos. If you are in doubt, choose Chora: getting to the beaches by day is easy, while getting back to a beach hotel at night after dinner in town is harder.

Do you need a car on Mykonos?

In Chora, Ornos and Platis Gialos you can get by with buses, the water taxi and the SeaBus. For Elia, Agrari, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Ano Mera, Panormos, Agios Sostis, Aleomandra and Merchia, a car or a hotel transfer is almost essential. Taxis are scarce in summer, so don't build your plans around them.

Which area of Mykonos is best for families with children?

Ornos remains the first choice: a sheltered bay, calm shallow water, restaurants and frequent buses to Chora. Platis Gialos is also convenient for families thanks to its sandy beach and choice of restaurants. Agios Ioannis will suit those who want quiet, while Agrari and Merchia are best avoided with small children because the water gets deep quickly.

Where to stay for the parties on Mykonos?

Chora suits most people, because the bars and clubs are close by and taxis are scarce at night. Stay at Paradise beach only if the parties are the whole point of the trip, while Super Paradise and Paraga suit fans of a specific club scene. Platis Gialos offers a compromise, with the water taxi to the club beaches and a bus into town.

Before you book, it helps to see the island in motion. Below are two videos that help you get a sense of the distances between the areas.

The first video is about the island's areas and hotels. After watching it, it is easier to place Chora, the southern beaches and the far east in relation to each other.

The second video helps you choose between the town and the beach. Watch it if you are still torn between Chora, Ornos and Platis Gialos.

In brief: what to book

Mykonos does not forgive a poorly chosen area: taxis are scarce, the roads are narrow, and walking distances are deceptive. So first decide what matters more to you, evenings in town or a beach at your door. Then book early, especially for July and August.

  • If it's your first trip: go for Chora, Ornos or Platis Gialos.
  • If you're travelling with children: go for Ornos, with Platis Gialos as the backup.
  • If it's your honeymoon: go for Agios Ioannis, Aleomandra or Kalafatis with the Cali hotel.
  • If you want luxury and a beach club: go for Psarou.
  • If you're coming for the parties: go for Chora, and Paradise only for the clubs.
  • If you want quiet and have a car: go for Elia, Kalo Livadi, Panormos or Merchia.
  • If you have a short stopover before a ferry: go for Tourlos or Agios Stefanos.

Once you have chosen your area, compare Mykonos hotels on Trip.com for the dates of your trip.
