Accessibility
What we aim for
We want this website to be usable by everyone: with a keyboard, with a screen reader, with enlarged text, with a need for high contrast, and on small screens.
Our benchmark is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, conformance level AA. It is the same benchmark that the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (the German accessibility act) sets for many digital services. We test every page template automatically against these criteria before publication; a draft that fails the test does not go online.
What is already in place
- Keyboard operation: every menu, link, form and expandable section can be reached without a mouse. Focus is visible and follows the reading order.
- Contrast: text meets a ratio of at least 4.5:1, large text and controls at least 3:1, in both light and dark design.
- Structure: every page has exactly one main heading, followed by a continuous heading hierarchy with no skipped levels. Screen readers can jump through it.
- Text alternatives: content images have a descriptive alternative; purely decorative images are marked as such and are not read out.
- Zoom: the content stays fully readable at 200 percent zoom and at a window width of 320 pixels, with no horizontal scrolling.
- Motion: there are no auto-playing videos, no flashing, and no content that changes more than three times per second. Animations follow the "reduce motion" system setting.
- Language: every language version is marked up in the source code, so that screen readers pick the right pronunciation.
- No mouse required: there is no function that can only be operated with a pointing device.
Known limitations
We are not finished, and we would rather write down where it falls short than claim completeness:
- Embedded third-party content, such as videos, maps or partners' booking forms, is outside our control. It does not always meet the criteria. Where we can, we offer a text alternative alongside it, for example an address and directions instead of an interactive map.
- Older articles from the earlier stock still have inadequate image alternatives in places, or tables without header rows. We are working through them as part of the ongoing update cycle.
- Complex tables with many columns can only be used by scrolling sideways on very small screens.
- PDF files are something we do not provide as a matter of principle; if one is linked anyway, it comes from an external body and we have not checked its accessibility.
Found a barrier?
Write to us at moc.liamg@ed.moc.msiruot with the subject line "Accessibility". It helps if you include:
- the address (URL) of the page,
- a description of the problem,
- what you use to operate the page, that is, the browser plus any screen reader or other assistive technology you use.
We get back to you within two working days and tell you whether and when we can fix it. If a page is not accessible to you, we will send you the content as plain text by email on request.
Status of this statement
This statement is based on our own assessment using automated testing tools and spot-check manual testing with a keyboard and a screen reader. No review by an independent body has taken place so far.
