Azerbaijan

You have already chosen Azerbaijan, so what remains are the practical questions. How many days to set aside for Baku, which district to stay in, how to get in from the airport and where the daily budget goes. This section is built around those decisions. We take them in order, from arrival to shopping before you leave.

Most of the articles are about the capital. There is a large overview of what to see in Baku, from the Old City to Gobustan. Museums are gathered separately, including the venues in the Old City and the "Gala" reserve. For those short on time, there is a one-day route: the Old City, the seafront promenade and the evening view of the Flame Towers. Another article compares tours of Baku by route and length and helps you work out which one to pick.

We cover lodging in two articles. The first explains where to stay in Baku: it compares the city's districts and the hotels in each of them. The second is about hotels on the seashore and answers a narrow question: which of them have their own beach. That is handy if you are combining the city with time by the water.

The practical side of the trip is handled in separate texts. The way from Baku airport to the center is described in three options: bus, taxi and transfer. The article on expenses shows what a day in the capital is made up of and where it is easy to overpay. The overview of weather by month and region helps you choose when to travel. There is also a text on souvenirs that lists the export limits. A selection of day trips from Baku, with tickets and routes, takes you beyond the capital, and the general article about the country covers climate zones, mud volcanoes and oil records.

Every article opens with a short answer to the main question. Then come the practical blocks: how to get there, how much time to allow, what to buy in advance. For prices and rules we state the source and the date we checked them. We verify the data against the official websites of the airport, museums and carriers, and we check locations on the map. We write about drawbacks plainly: if a district is noisy or the journey to a place takes half a day, the text will say so.

The section is meant for people who travel independently and plan the trip with Baku as their base. It works for a short stopover as well as for a week with outings beyond the city. If you need a detailed guide to other cities and regions of the country, it is not here yet. The regions appear in the articles on weather and on day trips from the capital. We are not a travel agency: we do not sell tours or organize trips.

Start with the article on when to go: both the route and the choice of lodging depend on the season. Then read the text on Baku's districts and settle on a hotel. After that, move on to the overview of sights and the list of museums to see how many days the city needs. Day trips and tours are easier to choose once the backbone of the route is in place. The articles on the airport transfer, daily expenses and souvenirs will be useful right before you fly.

The section belongs to "Asia", which is part of "Destinations". It has no subsections yet, so all the articles sit in a single list. If you are comparing neighboring countries, take a look at "Armenia". For comparison with other options for seaside vacations and city trips, there are "Turkey" and "United Arab Emirates". More distant destinations are gathered in "Thailand", "Vietnam", "India", "Indonesia" and "Maldives".

We keep the articles up to date: we recheck prices, timetables and rules against official sources and change the date of the check. Entry rules and rules on taking goods out of the country change, so before your trip verify them on the websites of the government bodies of Azerbaijan and of your own country. The section will grow, and new texts will appear in the same list. There is already enough here to plan a trip to Baku and outings from it. Save the texts you need and come back to them as you prepare.
