What this page is for

This page is the short answer to the question "what do you actually book with?". For each category there is exactly one provider, the same one we link to in the articles, plus a sentence on why that one.

Please note: every link labeled "Ad" is an affiliate link. If you book through it, the provider pays us a commission; the price for you stays the same. Lines without that label are plain information links that earn us nothing. How the model works and what rules we have set ourselves for it is explained on the page How we make money.

We do not switch provider from article to article. If it is listed here, it is what we use everywhere.

Tours, tickets and guided visits

GetYourGuide · Browse tours and tickets · Ad

The largest selection for Europe, by far the most reliable cancellation policy of the ones we compared (free up to 24 hours in advance on a great many offers) and tickets that actually work on your phone. We use it above all for timed-entry tickets to museums with long lines.

When you do not need it: at small museums with no crowds, the ticket desk on site is cheaper, because there is no booking fee. We say so in the articles wherever that applies.

Hotels and other stays

Trip.com · Search for a place to stay · Ad

Worldwide coverage, often lower prices than the big European portals, and prices that include taxes and fees from the start, which makes the comparison more honest.

When to look elsewhere: for small guesthouses and vacation rentals it pays to check the property's own website. Book direct and you more often get the better room and more flexible terms.

Airport transfers

Kiwitaxi · Book a transfer · Ad

A fixed price up front, a driver waiting with a sign, and coverage in more than 100 countries. Worth it if you land late at night, travel with a lot of luggage or with children, or fly into an airport well outside the city.

When you do not need it: when there is an airport train. We say in the city articles where that is the case and what it costs.

Rental cars

Discover Cars · Compare rental cars · Ad

Compares local suppliers with the international chains, shows the deposit and the excess before you book, and makes the insurance terms reasonably readable. That is exactly where most rental car trips go wrong.

What to watch for: the excess, the size of the deposit, the fuel policy, and whether a credit card in the driver's name is required. "No deposit" almost never means what it appears to mean.

Rail and long-distance coach

Omio · Search connections · Ad

Searches train, coach and flight in one query across 37 countries, which saves a lot of time on cross-border routes.

When to book direct: within a single country, the national rail operator's website is usually cheaper, because saver fares and rail cards are shown there in full. For Germany that means: check with Deutsche Bahn first.

eSIM for abroad

Yesim · Browse eSIM plans · Ad

Data plans for more than 150 countries, activated by QR code before departure, no swapping SIM cards on arrival.

When you do not need it: inside the EU, roaming is charged at your domestic rate. An eSIM mainly pays off outside the EU, on long stays, or if your plan has a low roaming data cap.

Compensation for flight problems

AirHelp · Check your claim · Ad

If your flight from an EU airport is canceled, badly delayed or you are denied boarding, the EU air passenger rights regulation entitles you to up to 600 euros. AirHelp pursues the claim for a success fee.

Important: you can also make the claim yourself, directly with the airline, and keep the full amount. The service is worth it when the airline does not respond or refuses.

Travel insurance

Here we deliberately link to no single policy. We are not an insurance intermediary within the meaning of § 34d GewO, we are not allowed to recommend a policy or calculate a premium, and we do not want to.

What actually matters in international health cover or trip cancellation insurance:

  • Repatriation has to be worded as "medically sensible", not merely "medically necessary".
  • Pre-existing conditions: are they excluded, and from when?
  • Excess per claim, not per year.
  • Length of cover per trip, often 42 or 56 days.
  • High-risk sports, if you plan to dive, climb or ski.
  • For cancellation cover: which reasons are actually accepted.

Use these points to compare for yourself with a provider in your country of residence; only they can insure you.

What is not here, and why

  • No flight comparison. The commissions are tiny, and the metasearch engines are the same ones you already know.
  • No credit cards and no banking offers. That is financial advice, not travel journalism.
  • No automatically linked brand names. Every link on this website is placed by hand.
  • Nothing to do with Russia. We do not advertise travel services there; the reasons are set out under How we make money.

Before you book

You cannot book anything on this website. Every link leads to the provider, and the contract is between you and them. They are responsible for cancellation, refunds and complaints. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, and save your booking confirmation offline.
