🤔 Miscellaneous

10

This section collects the topics that did not fit under any single country. You already have a rough idea of where you want to go, but some questions are not tied to one city: which of two destinations to pick, how to pay while traveling, where to sleep without a hotel. The articles in this section answer questions like these.

The most practical part of the section is the comparisons of two destinations. We set Mexico against Thailand on flights, visas and budget, Croatia against Bulgaria on beach vacations, Bulgaria against Montenegro on beaches, prices and season. There are also the pairs Czechia and Poland, Italy and Czechia, Boracay and Palawan. Each comparison names its criteria plainly so that the choice is easy to follow.

The second large group is roundups on a single theme. These cover waterfalls from Niagara to Iguazu and Angel Falls, beaches with pink, green and black sand, the national parks of Vietnam, ghost towns, amusement parks, unusual hotels and the new wonders of the world. Alongside them are articles about one place: the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, the Crooked House in Sopot, the sights of Monaco, the Appalachian Trail in the USA, the Bregenzerwald region in Austria.

The third group answers practical travel questions. Card or cash on vacation, European tourist cards and the cases when they pay for themselves, a seaside vacation with children, shopping in Milan and Rome. Ways of living abroad without paying for a place to stay get their own coverage: house sitting and couchsurfing. There are also articles for general interest: how an airplane is built, movies about Europe, the fruits of Vietnam, dangerous delicacies, the cruise ship Allure of the Seas.

Every article opens with a short answer to the main question. Practical blocks follow: tickets, opening hours, getting there, season, permits. We give a source next to each figure and a verification date for each article. Drawbacks are stated plainly: in the roundup of clean seas every body of water has its own weak points, and the article on scary places says what is closed to tourists.

The section suits anyone choosing between two countries or looking for an idea for the next trip. It is also useful if you are planning something out of the ordinary: a long hiking route, a cruise, a stay with locals. If you need a detailed guide to one city with its districts and transportation, this section will not replace it. A comparison helps you choose a destination, but it does not plan the trip day by day.

Start with a comparison if you have not settled on a destination yet. Then read the articles on money and tourist cards: they affect the budget of any trip around Europe. The roundups are best read last, when the core of the plan is ready and all that is left is to add one or two places. Read the articles on free accommodation well in advance, because this kind of stay has to be arranged before you leave.

"Miscellaneous" sits at the top level of the site and has no subsections. All the articles are in a single list, so go by the headlines: they name the country, the place and the main question. Once you have chosen a destination, move on to the guides for that country. Cities, accommodation and transportation are already covered there.

Prices, opening hours and entry rules change, so we update the articles and check the data against the official websites of the places. Check visa requirements and permit conditions with the official sources of the country you are going to: we show what to look at and where to find it. In comparisons that state a year, the data refers to that season. Before your trip, look at the verification date at the top of the article. If it is an old one, confirm the key figures with the source we list next to them.
