Five Christmas markets in Budapest you can visit in one evening

Five Christmas markets in Budapest you can visit in one evening

Christmas in Budapest starts in mid-November. The center of Pest turns into a corridor of string lights, wooden stalls, and hot mulled wine. The main markets are less than ten minutes apart on foot, so you can cover all five in one evening. We've put together five markets with dates, opening hours, and addresses so you don't have to search for them on a map in the dark.

The market at St. Stephen's Basilica has won the title of the most beautiful in Europe four times in a row (according to the market's official website, as of 09/2026). In the evening, the basilica's facade becomes a screen for light projections, and the view is visible from the other end of the square.

💡 In short:

Deák Ferenc Street starts right at Vörösmarty Square, and you can walk to Erzsébet Square and the basilica in ten minutes.

Budapest's largest Christmas market sits at the end of Váci Street, across from the historic Gerbeaud café. You'll find over a hundred wooden stalls run by local artisans across roughly 1,200 square meters (as of 09/2026, official Vörösmarty Square fair website). In the center of the square, vendors serve Hungarian cuisine: hot dishes and sweets to go with your mulled wine.

The main stage hosts concerts and children's programs every day. On weekdays they start at 17:00, on weekends in the afternoon and after 16:00 (as of 09/2026, official fair website). British magazine Time Out has called this market one of the most beautiful in Europe.

  • Address: Vörösmarty Square, Pest. Open on map.
  • What to see: over a hundred artisan stalls and food pavilions around the main stage.
  • Who it's for: anyone looking for concerts, children's programs, and the widest selection of gifts.

2. St. Stephen's Basilica: the Advent Bazilika fair

You'll find the second major fair on St. Stephen's Square, less than a ten-minute walk from Vörösmarty Square. Nearly a hundred Hungarian artisans set up here, and in the center of the square they flood an ice rink with free admission. The main spectacle starts after dark: projections on the basilica's facade run every 30 minutes from 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM (as of 09/2026, Advent Bazilika).

If you want to see the projections without the crowds, come to the first showing.

  • Dates: November 14 - January 1 (as of 09/2026, fair website).
  • Hours: Monday-Thursday 11:00 AM-9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 11:00 AM-11:00 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM-9:00 PM (as of 09/2026, basilica fair schedule).
  • Nearby: a couple of minutes from the basilica, in a building on Hercegprímás Street, there's a rooftop bar at the Aria Hotel with a viewing terrace.

3. Fashion street on Deák Ferenc street

Right after Vörösmarty Square, the pedestrian Deák Ferenc Street begins, known locally as "Fashion Street." It's 100 meters from the square (on the map), and the street itself runs about half a kilometer. In winter it's decorated with garlands and light arches, and it's the shortest stretch of the route between the two fairs.

The street works as a corridor of light between Vörösmarty Square and Váci Street: walk through it on your way to the next fair. You'll find food and gifts at the two main venues.

  • Address: Deák Ferenc Street, Pest. Open on the map.
  • When to go: after sunset, when the garlands are switched on.

4. The fair in the park by City Hall

The fourth fair occupies a small park next to City Hall, not far from Deák Ferenc Square. It's the quietest of the five venues: fewer stalls, but plenty of activities for children. It's worth stopping by if you need a break from the busy fairs at the basilica and Vörösmarty Square.

  • Address: Városháza Park by Deák Ferenc Square. Open on the map.
  • Who it's for: families with children, because children's programs take place here.

5. Erzsébet Square: the fair by the Ferris wheel

The fifth fair sits at the foot of the Ferris wheel on Erzsébet Square. The focus here is on food: Christmas dishes and drinks can be eaten on the spot or taken home as gifts. The stalls are open in the evening, and the square itself, with the wheel, stays lively until late at night.

  • Address: Erzsébet Square, Pest. Open on the map.
  • Tickets: the Ferris wheel ride is paid separately, the ticket office is next to the attraction.

How to walk around the fairs in one evening

The five fairs fit into a single walk. Start at Vörösmarty Square and turn onto Deák Ferenc Street. From there, stop by the park near City Hall and walk to Erzsébet Square. Finish at the basilica, where projections run until late evening. The distance between the farthest points is less than 3 kilometers (on the map), so you won't need public transport.

The squares stay open until late evening, so you have the whole evening to explore: linger where you like it, and don't try to cover all five locations in an hour. If you want a guided route, check out holiday Budapest tours on GetYourGuide.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When do the Christmas markets in Budapest open?

The markets start in mid-November, even before Advent begins. Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen's Basilica open first, Fashion Street joins in the second half of November, and the market on Erzsébet Square closes earlier than the others, before Christmas. Check the new season's dates on the official websites (as of 09/2026, Advent Bazilika website).

How much does it cost to enter the Budapest markets?

Entry to all five locations is free, you only pay for food, drinks, and souvenirs. The Ferris wheel ride and tickets to nearby museums are paid separately. Your evening budget depends on your appetite, so plan your spending in advance.

Which market should I choose if I only have one evening?

Start at Vörösmarty Square, which has the most stalls, then walk along Fashion Street, and finish at St. Stephen's Basilica with the light show. Erzsébet Square is worth the same evening only if you want to have dinner at the market and ride the Ferris wheel.

Which markets are open on December 24 and 25?

On these days, the markets at Vörösmarty Square and the basilica operate on a reduced schedule. On December 24 they are open from 10:00 to 15:00. On December 25 and 26, the hours change: at Vörösmarty Square until 18:00, at the basilica until 20:00 (as of 09/2026, official Advent Bazilika website).

How do I get to the markets and do I need public transport?

All five locations are in central Pest and fit into a walking route. From one market to another it's a 5-15 minute walk (on the map). You'll only need public transport if you're staying far from the center or arriving directly from the train station.

In short: what to book

The fairs are free, so you only need to book travel and accommodation. If you're going by train, train tickets to Budapest are worth getting in advance. If you want to stay within walking distance of the fairs, check out hotels in central Budapest.

  • If you have one evening: Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen's Basilica.
  • If you're traveling with kids: the fair at City Hall and the free ice rink by the basilica.
  • If you want to eat and skate: Erzsébet Square.

The five fairs fit into one evening, and the light show at the basilica is worth a separate trip even in freezing weather.
