Budget hotel in Turkey: what to check before check-in

Saving on a hotel in Turkey should not cost you your vacation. Citizens of Germany and most EU countries can enter the country without a visa for up to 90 days (as of 09/2026, Auswärtiges Amt). Everything else depends on how you choose your hotel and what you check on site.

A budget hotel does not mean a bad one. But cheap options have their weak spots: paid safes, water and food quality, extra charges for air conditioning. Below we break down what you should know in advance so you do not lose money, documents, and a couple of vacation days.

General safety rules in Turkey

💡 In short:

  • Follow basic rules of conduct: clothing, photos, conversation topics.
  • Put money and valuables in the safe, and carry your passport or ID card with you: in Turkey it can be checked on the street. Keep a copy separately.
  • Drink only bottled water.
  • Entry and safety rules: 09/2026, verified on the official Auswärtiges Amt website.

Turkey is one of the most visited countries in Europe, and tourists feel at ease in the resort areas. The waterfronts here are patrolled, and people are more likely to help you in an unusual situation than to scam you.

But you follow the basic rules yourself. In large cities, such as Istanbul, women should avoid walking alone at night. Choose modest clothing: there is no direct ban, but local customs deserve respect.

It is better not to discuss politics and religion with strangers. Insulting the memory of Atatürk or national symbols is punished severely, and a bad joke here can turn into serious problems.

You enter a mosque without shoes. Women need to cover their head and shoulders, and wear a long skirt. At tourist sites, scarves are often handed out at the entrance, but it is more reliable to bring your own.

Watch your belongings in crowds: at markets, train stations, and airports. A typical scheme looks like this: one person starts talking to you, while a second one pulls your wallet out of your bag.

Passports are also targeted here. You need to carry the document with you, so keep it in an inside pocket and store a copy separately.

Drinking alcohol in public places is not allowed. At resorts this is treated more leniently, but if you are drunk on the street you can end up with the police. Drugs are treated much more strictly, up to life imprisonment.

Do not photograph locals without permission. If you like a colorful local, ask them or take the shot discreetly.

Hotel safety

Theft in Turkey can happen not only at the bazaar or the beach, but also in your own room. So put all valuables in the safe, because the hotel is not responsible for items left in the room.

Do not leave your phone, wallet, or camera on the beach, even if you are going for a five-minute swim. In budget hotels the safe may cost extra, so check the price at the front desk when you check in, before you leave your devices and documents there.

The more expensive the hotel, the more varied the buffet. But do not overeat: food poisoning on vacation is not uncommon. The quality of food and alcohol directly depends on the hotel category.

Do not drink tap water. Auswärtiges Amt does not recommend drinking tap water in Turkey and advises bottled water (as of 09/2026, health recommendations). Four- and five-star hotels usually provide purified water; in budget hotels you will have to go to the store for it.

Do not buy water from street vendors at bazaars: check that the cap is intact. In restaurants, also ask for a sealed bottle rather than water from an open pitcher.

Try new dishes in small portions: local cuisine is fatty and spicy. Put activated charcoal in your suitcase in advance.

Stay alert inside the hotel as well: sometimes even clothes and cosmetics go missing. The worse the hotel, the less likely you are to be shown camera footage, so an investigation usually only starts after you call the police.

Excursions at the front desk are often sold at a big markup. If you are traveling without a tour operator, plan ahead. You can compare prices and routes on GetYourGuide.

How to choose a budget hotel

The main rule is simple: do not rush. Even on a minimal budget, compare several options and read reviews.

Look at reviews from people who vacationed in the same season you chose. The set of services changes from season to season, and summer ratings do not always match autumn ones.

Check the distance to the sea and the type of beach. If you are traveling with children, choose a sandy beach with a safe and gentle entry. For diving, platform beaches work well. The closer the hotel is to the first line, the more expensive the room. From farther lines you will have to walk, but beach transfers are often available even in budget hotels.

Check how far the hotel is from the airport and attractions. If shopping matters to you, you will have to choose between being close to the beach and close to a shopping center.

What to expect from budget hotels in Turkey

Budget does not mean bad. But do not expect service beyond what you paid for.

There will be no culinary delights at the buffet, and alcohol in two-star hotels is low quality. Entertainment is limited, and some activities cost extra. The beach will most likely be at a distance from the main building.

Internet in cheap hotels is almost always weak. Sometimes Wi-Fi works only in the lobby or costs extra. If you need connectivity, set up an eSIM for Turkey in advance.

Air conditioning often comes with an extra charge. You will not be allowed to take room towels to the beach, so bring a couple of your own towels from home.

Look for a balance between saving and comfort. If you constantly have to put up with inconveniences, you will not get a proper rest. A well-chosen hotel in Turkey solves half of your trip's success.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Can you drink tap water in hotels in Turkey?

No. Tap water in Turkey is considered non-potable, and Auswärtiges Amt does not recommend drinking it (as of 09/2026, Reise- und Sicherheitshinweise). Even for brushing your teeth, it is safer to use a bottle.

Should you put money and your passport in the safe?

Money and devices, yes: the hotel is not responsible for items in the room. Carry your passport or ID card with you, because in Turkey it can be checked on the street, and leave a copy in the safe.

How safe is it to walk around resorts at night?

At resorts, waterfronts are patrolled, and an evening walk is usually calm. In large cities, women should avoid walking alone at night.

What should you bring to a budget hotel?

Your own beach towels, activated charcoal, and medicine for stomach upset. Beach towels from the room cannot be taken out, so bring them from home. Bring copies of your documents and cash in small bills. A charger, adapter, and a supply of water are also better prepared in advance, so you do not have to look for all of that on site.

Can you drink alcohol on the street?

No. Open alcohol on streets, in parks, and on public transport is prohibited in Turkey. Drink at a bar or in your room.
