Overwater bungalows are chosen for one reason: you step out of your room straight into the lagoon. But the archipelago stretches for 871 km, and there are more than a hundred resorts across 1,192 islands. The difference between them isn't in the star rating, it's in the lagoon, the reef, and the transfer from Malé airport.

How to choose an overwater bungalow

The villa type matters more than the star rating. Lagoon villas give you direct water access, but the bottom beneath them is often sandy. Reef villas sit farther from the shore, but snorkeling right from your ladder immediately gives you corals and fish.

The direction the villa faces matters just as much. Sunset villas cost more and are better for photos. Sunrise villas are quieter and get less wind.

Transfers from Malé airport work in different ways. Resorts around the capital use speedboats. To reach distant atolls, you fly by seaplane or take a domestic flight. Seaplanes don't fly after sunset, so if you arrive in the evening, you often need a night in Malé.

Factor in the fees in advance. The green tax from January 1, 2025 is 12 USD per night per person, children under two are exempt (as of 09/2026, MIRA). On top of the rate, hotels add a service charge and a service tax, so the final bill is higher than the price on the website.

Check whether the resort accepts children. Some islands are adults-only. Others are set up for families, with clubs, nannies, and kids' menus. This is worth confirming before you book.

Villingili Island lies in Addu Atoll in the south, reached by domestic flight. Honeymooners and families with children come here. The spa has massage rooms, meditation and yoga spaces, and a hirudotherapy program.

The resort occupies the island of Boduhithi, where guests are taken by speedboat from Male. The place is chosen for its calm pace. Snorkeling and diving here offer encounters with manta rays and reef sharks, and turtles and dolphins can be seen in the lagoon.

The resort is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World association, and guests are accommodated in upscale bungalows with ocean views. 7. Dusit Thani Maldives

The resort sits on Mudhdhoo Island in Baa Atoll, the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Maldives. It is managed by the Thai chain Dusit Hotels & Resorts. According to the resort, the journey takes 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana Airport, or 25 minutes by domestic flight plus 10 minutes by speedboat (official website).

Diving and snorkeling around the island are considered among the best in the country: you can encounter turtles, rays, and coral gardens. The resort occupies Landaa Giraavaru island, where villas for couples are located. It has a fitness center, a spa complex, a pool, and a beach with white sand. An entertainment program runs every evening, and five cuisine styles cover any taste.

The dry season runs from December to April. During these months there is less rain and better underwater visibility. The wet season from May to November offers lower prices but adds wind and waves. Resorts operate year-round, but during the wet season sea excursions are canceled more often.

How do you get from Malé airport to the resort?

Nearby resorts are served by speedboats, and you make the trip in a single leg. Remote atolls require a seaplane or a domestic flight. Seaplanes fly only during daylight hours, while domestic flights are also available in the evening. Seaplanes have a baggage weight limit, so check the allowance when booking.
