Bali beyond Kuta: 3 peaceful destinations

Bali beyond Kuta: 3 peaceful destinations

Bali has long stopped being a quiet island. In Kuta, bars stay open until morning, and at the rice terraces in Ubud there's a line for photos. At the same time, the island is big: a couple of hours by road and there are noticeably fewer tourists.

Since 2024, every foreign tourist pays a provincial levy: 150,000 rupiah per person per visit (as of 09/2026, official Bali provincial portal). The receipt with a QR code is shown on arrival, and payment is made online before the trip.

The short version is this: for peace and quiet on Bali, it's worth heading to the Gili Islands, to the pair of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, or to Seminyak next to Kuta. Below we break down three destinations: how they differ, how to get there, and where to find accommodation.

What's worth knowing before the trip

💡 In short:

  • Provincial levy: 150,000 rupiah per person, pay online before entering the island (as of 09/2026, official Bali provincial portal).
  • The boat from Padang Bai to Gili takes about 1.5-2 hours (as of 09/2026, BlueWater Express).
  • There are no city buses on the islands. On Nusa Lembongan people rent scooters, and on Gili motorized transport is banned: people get around by bicycle and cidomo.
  • Bring cash: ATMs on Gili Meno and Nusa Ceningan are rare.

Kuta holds the title of the island's noisiest place. Nightclubs and surf schools operate around the clock, and the main street is packed in the evening. Ubud has also stopped being quiet: the yoga center draws more people than any beach on Bali's west coast. If you want to see the island, not just a hotel with a pool, it's worth devoting some days to moving around.

The temples of Ulun Danu, Tanah Lot and Besakih, the slopes of Mount Agung, the crater lake Batur and the northern beach of Lovina are on almost every tour itinerary. That's exactly where the main flow of tour groups gathers in the dry season, so you won't find quiet at these spots.

For peace and quiet, it's better to leave the main island or head west from Kuta. Here are three options with different character and different budgets.

1. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air

Three islands off the northwest coast of Lombok have long stopped being a secret. Still, there are no Kuta-style crowds here: the islands are small, motorized transport is banned, and in the evening you hear only the surf and the muezzin from the village.

The speedboat from Padang Bai takes about 1.5-2 hours (as of 09/2026, carrier schedule), and the port itself is about two hours by road from Kuta (according to the map).

There is no single answer about the three islands: they are very different. Choose based on your plans and your mood.

  • Gili Trawangan. The largest and most famous island in the group: divers, surfers, and fans of evening bars come here. The beaches are good, and there are plenty of hotels, restaurants, and small cafes.
  • Gili Meno. The smallest island in the group, which you can walk around in less than an hour. Along the way you will pass only a few restaurants and typical Balinese bungalows.
  • Gili Air. A medium-sized island, more developed than Meno: there is a village with a mosque, beach bars, and several resorts.

If you want an unhurried vacation, choose Gili Meno. There are no cars or nighttime noise here, beachfront bungalows cost less than city hotels, and the day follows a simple schedule: breakfast, snorkeling at the reef, dinner on the sand. When you want some activity, you can take a boat to Trawangan in a few minutes or head to neighboring Lombok to Mount Rinjani.

  • Who it's for: couples, divers, and anyone ready for a quiet pace and early nights.
  • Not for: if you need clubs, shopping, and a wide choice of restaurants every day.
  • The catch: Gili Meno has only a few restaurants and guesthouses, so lodging options are limited.
  • Price: a night in a beachfront bungalow costs less than a hotel room in Kuta; hotels on Gili Trawangan on Trip.com.

2. Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan

Two neighboring islands southeast of Bali. Nusa Lembongan has been developed for a long time: dive centers, surf schools, cafes over the water. During the day the roads are busy, but the western part of the island still has hidden coves where villas and guesthouses sit away from the main flow.

Almost everyone rents a scooter here. A day's rental costs less than a taxi between beaches, and the island immediately becomes small: you will find small beaches, snorkeling spots at the coral reefs, and three villages with restaurants and bars.

Nusa Ceningan deserves a separate look. It connects to Lembongan by the narrow Yellow Bridge. There are very few hotels here, mostly bungalows and small guesthouses, so there are noticeably fewer people on the island. The seaweed farms deserve special attention. At high tide the water hides them completely, and at low tide dozens of local farmers harvest the crop and transport it by boat.

  • Who it's for: surfers, divers, and those who want to explore the island on their own by scooter.
  • Not for: if you are not ready to get on a scooter and prefer large hotels with a pool.
  • The catch: Nusa Ceningan has very few lodging options, and there is almost no evening entertainment.
  • Price: a wide range, from guesthouses to villas by the coves; hotels on Nusa Lembongan on Trip.com.

3. Seminyak instead of Kuta

Seminyak borders Kuta but lives at a calmer pace. From the clubs to your hotel it is about fifteen minutes by scooter (according to the map), the beach here is nicer, and there are noticeably fewer people.

The area has been embraced by artists and entrepreneurs who work remotely and stay on Bali for months. You feel the atmosphere on the streets: many cafes and small restaurants, workshops and studios, and in the evening all of it stays open late.

For a long trip, Seminyak is convenient. Through short-term rental services you can rent an apartment here for a month, and the area itself becomes a base for trips around the whole island. Ubud, by comparison, has long been overloaded, while Seminyak remains more lively and less touristy.

  • Who it's for: those who want cafes, villas, fast internet, and proximity to the beach.
  • Not for: if you are looking for complete quiet, since Kuta with its nightlife is right next door.
  • Price: an apartment for a month or a hotel for a week, with plenty of options.

How to get to the islands and Seminyak

All three destinations are connected to Bali by water. Boats to the Gilis depart from Padang Bai in the east of the island, and to Nusa Lembongan most often from Sanur. The drive from Denpasar airport to Padang Bai takes about two hours (according to the map), and to Sanur about half an hour (according to the map), so allow extra time.

If you are heading straight to Seminyak, the trip is shorter: from the airport you will get there in half an hour to an hour depending on traffic (according to the map). It is better to book a transfer in advance; prices at the terminal exit are higher.

The crossing depends on the weather. Morning departures are calmer, and in July and August you should buy tickets for the first boats in advance. We checked the schedules on 12.09.2026 on the carrier's website (as of 09/2026, BlueWater Express). Bring a light jacket: it is windy on the water even in the dry season.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When are there the fewest tourists on the Gilis?

The peak falls in July and August, when Europe is on vacation. It's quietest in May, September, and October: dry weather holds, and beaches and hotels are less crowded. In winter, the islands have a rainy season, and some boats are canceled due to waves.

How much is a boat from Padang Bai to the Gilis?

The price depends on the operator and destination: a one-way ticket costs several hundred thousand rupiah (as of 09/2026, carrier schedules). A return ticket is cheaper than two separate trips, and in high season spots sell out several days in advance. Check the departure time on the operator's website.

Can you get around Nusa Lembongan without a scooter?

You can, but it's inconvenient: the main bays are scattered along the coast, and there's no public transport on the island. Scooters are rented by the day, rental costs a few euros, and with one you can reach the Yellow Bridge and Nusa Ceningan. It's worth bringing an international driver's license.

Seminyak or Kuta, which to choose for a first trip?

Seminyak is quieter: you can reach Kuta's clubs by scooter in fifteen minutes, while staying near a more pleasant beach. Choose Kuta if you want to live in the center of the nightlife and not waste time on the road.

How do you get from Denpasar airport to Padang Bai?

Book a transfer in advance: the drive takes about two hours (on the map), and the first boats leave in the morning. A pre-booked car is cheaper than a taxi from the terminal. Allow extra time for traffic, especially in the rainy season.

In short: what's worth booking

The choice matrix is simple. You want diving, bars, and evening company: go for Gili Trawangan. You want quiet and a book on the sand: Gili Meno or Nusa Ceningan. You want cafes, villas, and remote work: hotels in Seminyak on Trip.com.

Accommodation on the islands gets booked up faster than on the main island, so it's better to book lodging and the crossing together. If you're still unsure about dates, compare options in advance.
