Bulgaria in autumn and winter: Devin spa, Pamporovo skiing and wine near Pirin

Autumn in Bulgaria smells of grapes and pine needles. While the usual destinations shut down for winter, the Rhodopes are just waking up. Here, hot springs sit next to ski slopes, and spa hotels work with local ingredients: grape seeds, honey, lavender.

This country has long been underestimated, even though its soft hills and vineyards are perfect for leisurely walks, and the slopes of Pamporovo hold snow until April. In one trip, you can combine thermal spas, caves, and wine. And all of it costs less than the Alps.

Below is a breakdown by attraction: where to soak in mineral water, where to go for caves, how to get on skis, and where to try local wine. Prices and opening hours are listed with a source and verification date.

What to know before you go

💡 In short:

  • Base for thermal relaxation: Devin in the Rhodopes, with its mineral springs.
  • Alpine skiing: Pamporovo, one of the most affordable resorts in Europe.

Devin: thermal springs of the Rhodopes

Devin lies in a valley surrounded by pine forests. The town is known for its mineral water, which comes out of the ground already warm. This water has long been used for heart, vascular, and nervous system conditions. The Devin bottled water brand is known throughout the country.

The thermal programs here change with the season. In autumn, local ingredients come into play: grape seed scrubs, honey detox wraps, apple-based balms. The warm mineral water helps you relax, but treatment is best discussed with a doctor. After the procedures, heading into the mountains feels easier.

The town's spa hotels are a convenient place to stay. The five-star Orpheus Spa is a few minutes from the center, with pools and a large spa area. Nearby, Persenk Spa Hotel offers a mineral pool and saunas. If you want to compare rooms and prices for specific dates, check options at Orpheus Spa on Trip.com.

Trigrad gorge and the devil's throat

The Trigrad Gorge begins 30 km from Devin. It stretches for 6-7 kilometers, with vertical walls rising 100-300 meters (according to Visit Bulgaria). The Trigrad River flows along the bottom, and the road winds between the rocks, which is reason enough to come.

The main point of the route is the Devil's Throat cave. The river plunges inside from a height of 42 meters, making it the highest underground waterfall in the Balkans (according to the Visit Bulgaria portal). The hall where the water crashes down was named the Hall of Thunder because of the deep rumble. You enter through a gallery cut into the rock and climb back up along a long staircase beside the stream.

Nearby there is plenty to see for caving enthusiasts. Yagodinska Cave stretches for several kilometers and is open for tours year-round. In autumn, it is cool here and there are almost no tourists. Bring a warm jacket: underground temperatures stay low in any season.

Pamporovo: alpine skiing in the Rhodopes

Pamporovo is the region's main winter resort. The slopes descend from Snezhanka Peak and suit both beginners and confident skiers. There are separate areas for snowboarding, night skiing, and cross-country skiing. Those looking for challenging slopes head to nearby Chepelare.

The resort keeps prices noticeably lower than the Alps. A day ski pass for an adult starts at around €18, with the price depending on the season; children and youth pay less (as of: 09/2026, Pamporovo web shop). The season usually runs from early December to early April. More than a dozen ski schools operate here, and there are separate areas for sledding.

Even if you have never been on skis, an instructor will get you onto the slopes in a couple of lessons. After an active day, it is easy to return to a spa hotel and warm up in the hot water. This contrast of exertion and recovery is the whole point of the trip.

Wine and spa: the Uva Nestum complex

In the southwest of the country, near Gotse Delchev, stands the Uva Nestum Wine & SPA complex. It lies in the valley of the Mesta River, at the foot of Pirin. The name speaks to the terroir: "uva" means grape, and Nestum is the old name of the Mesta River.

This is a boutique estate with limited production and family management. Around it spread 2.3 hectares of its own vineyards, where Rubin, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tamyanka grow (according to Uva Nestum, 09/2026). The wine is also used in the spa: treatments in wooden baths based on grapes. From the large pool, you can see the vines, and in the evenings the complex hosts wine dinners with a sommelier.

Within 10-20 km around lie Bulgaria's most picturesque villages. Kovachevitsa, Leshten, and Gorno Dryanovo are built from old stone houses on the slopes. They have been filmed in movies more than once. Book a room with a vineyard view in advance: prices at Uva Nestum on Trip.com are worth checking for specific dates.

When to go and how to get there

Autumn is good for spas, wine, and hiking. Come in winter for skiing. The nearest airports are Plovdiv and Sofia, and from there it is more convenient to drive: the mountain roads are scenic, and public transport is infrequent. A rental car or transfer solves the question of getting to the Rhodopes.

Tours of caves, wineries, and mountain villages are easier to book in advance, especially in high season. Below is a selection of options for this region.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit the Rhodopes for spas and wine?

September through November is optimal. The weather is mild, there are few tourists, and spa hotels switch to autumn programs with local ingredients. For skiing, come from December to April, when Pamporovo is open.

Do I need a car for a trip around the Rhodopes?

It makes the route much easier. The mountain roads are beautiful, but public transport runs infrequently. A rental car or a pre-booked transfer from Plovdiv airport saves time between Devin, Pamporovo, and the wineries.

In short: what to book

Bulgaria in autumn and winter covers several needs at once: hot springs, caves, skiing, and wine. The Rhodopes are compact, so in one trip you can fit in the spas of Devin, the slopes of Pamporovo, and a tasting near Gotse Delchev.

If you want rest and wellness: book a spa hotel in Devin and mineral treatments. If you are coming in winter: plan Pamporovo and your ski pass in advance. If wine interests you: book Uva Nestum with a vineyard view. And cave and village tours are easier to take as a package: find tours in the region on GetYourGuide.
