Car rental in Sardinia: 13 tips to avoid overpaying
A car on Sardinia solves almost everything. Beaches, winding mountain roads, and viewpoints are scattered all over the island, and buses between them run infrequently. Without a car, you risk spending your entire vacation in one town and seeing only its immediate surroundings.
The good news is that renting costs reasonable money if you book in advance and don't overpay for unnecessary extras. A compact car with air conditioning and full insurance covers almost any trip around the island. Below are 13 tips we verified against Italian rental rules and September 2026 rates.
The island has both fixed speed cameras and cameras in patrol cars, and the fine will arrive at your home address.

13 Tips for renting a car on Sardinia
💡 In short:
- Book your car in advance and only with free cancellation.
- Use a credit card: rental companies often charge a surcharge with a debit card.
- Add full insurance with zero deductible and extended liability.

The tips are ordered by when they're easiest to apply: first car class and card, then booking and insurance, then pickup and return. Almost every step can be handled online before you even fly out, and at the airport counter all that's left is picking up the keys.
Below is a quick summary, with details for each point further down in the sections with the same number.
Tip | What to do |
|---|---|
1. Car | Always get one if you want to see the whole island |
2. Air conditioning | Essential in summer |
3. Roads | Drive calmly and don't copy the locals' overtaking |
4. Booking | Search in advance and recheck the price before your trip |
5. Cancellation | Free only, no fee |
6. Fuel | Full tank at pickup, full at return |
7. Card | Credit, not debit |
8. Class | Two people are fine with a small class, four need a sedan |
9. Insurance | Full with zero deductible plus extended liability |
10. Airport | Pick up the car in Olbia, Cagliari, or Alghero |
11. Pickup | Photograph the car and record all scratches in the report |
12. Safety | Leave nothing in the cabin |
13. Return | Refuel, photograph, get the report |
These thirteen points only work together. A car without air conditioning and a booking without insurance eat up all your savings on the very first day.
Tip 1: a car opens up the whole island
Public transport on Sardinia covers the cities and a couple of well-known resorts. Most beaches, viewpoints, and villages in the interior simply have no bus service. So a car here isn't a luxury, it's the way to see the island rather than just one corner of it.
The coastal roads are especially good: every turn reveals a new shade of water. For a ten-day trip, the most practical approach is to fly and rent a car. If you're going for two weeks or more, consider the option of your own car and a ferry from Livorno to Olbia: the crossing takes 7.5 to 9 hours (as of 09/2026, Ferryhopper).
Tip 2: get a car with air conditioning
Air conditioning in a rental car isn't about comfort, it's about safety. In July and August the island is hot, and without climate control you'll arrive at the beach already exhausted. When booking, check the air conditioning item in the class description: the cheapest offers sometimes don't have it.
Tip 3: the roads are excellent, but traffic is heavy
The asphalt on Sardinia is in very good condition, but traffic in the three major cities (Cagliari, Olbia, Alghero) is heavy. Locals are in a hurry, tourists are looking around, and that leads to overtaking on narrow sections and sudden braking. Drive calmly and let those in a hurry pass.

Don't exceed the limit and don't try to drive the way locals do. The limits on the island are the same as throughout Italy: 50 km/h in cities, 90 on secondary roads, 110 on main roads, 130 on motorways (as of 09/2026, Polizia di Stato).
Speed enforcement intensifies in high season, from June to August, when the island sees the most tourists. From mid-October, mobile cameras and patrols are rare, but the rule applies year-round. If you're pulled over, politeness and your documents matter more than explanations about unfamiliar road markings.
Tip 4: search in advance, but watch the price
Rental prices on Sardinia change every week. Booking in advance is usually cheaper, but not always: comparison sites sometimes release good deals just a couple of days before the date. In practice, this means you should start looking for a car two to three months ahead, then check the price again before your trip and rebook at a free-cancellation rate if it drops.
We compare at least three portals before paying. Comparing prices on DiscoverCars is convenient because the search results show the rental company and terms right away. The second option is Check24 with free cancellation up to the last day before pickup, and the third is Sunny Cars, where the price already includes an insurance package.
The spread between portals is noticeable: the same car on the same dates can cost a third less on another site. So keep links to your favorite portals bookmarked and check them before you fly.
Tip 5: free cancellation only
Take a rate with free cancellation, even if it costs a couple of euros more. It's your only leverage against rising prices: up to the last day you can calmly rebook the car at a better price and cancel the previous booking without a fee.
Check rates with free cancellation both a month and a week before your trip: the price difference for the same dates can be very noticeable. If a rate is cheaper but non-refundable, you lose both money and flexibility.
Tip 6: fuel policy and gas station prices

The fuel policy is chosen at booking and can't be changed later. Take the "full tank at pickup, full at return" option: it's the most straightforward. The same-level return policy looks more flexible, but in practice you end up topping off extra fuel before returning the car, and that's wasted money.
Fuel prices on the island are around the national average and close to German levels. Diesel on Sardinia is cheaper than 95-octane gasoline, so fuel type is worth considering when choosing a car: on a long route the difference turns into real money.
Fill up at regular city stations, not just on the highway. Pumps near motorways carry a markup, while prices in cities and villages are lower. The most convenient place to fill a full tank before return is on the approach to the airport: there are almost no gas stations right at the terminal.
Tip 7: book with a credit card

The difference between a credit and debit card comes down to price. The rental company places a deposit hold on the card, and with a debit card they can't always charge the amount in case of damage. That's why rates with a debit card are noticeably more expensive, and sometimes debit cards simply aren't accepted.
A second rule also applies: the main driver's name must match the name on the card. Both at booking and at pickup. If the booking was made with your travel companion's card, the counter will ask for their card and their driver's license.
On the aggregator DiscoverCars, many offers can be paid with a debit card without a large surcharge, but the rate is still your choice. Read the card terms before paying, not at the counter.
If you rent a car more than once a year, look into cards with included rental insurance and extended liability. Their annual fee is higher than usual, but the first rental alone can pay for it.
Tip 8: car class by number of people
Choose the class based on the number of people and suitcases. Two people are fine with a small class, like a Fiat Panda. With three passengers, take a compact class, and with four, a sedan or crossover: otherwise someone's luggage will ride on their lap.
Also check the trunk capacity in the class description. In summer, with beach gear and a stroller, a car that is "on the edge" turns into a real hassle. If you are driving on dirt roads to remote coves, add ground clearance to your criteria, but remember: most beaches in Sardinia are accessible even in a regular sedan.
Tip 9: full coverage and extended liability
Of all the options, insurance matters most. Take two packages: full coverage with no deductible and extended liability. The first usually goes by the abbreviation CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), meaning you are not responsible for body damage. The second, EP or SLI, adds a liability limit toward third parties.
Why take the second one if Italy already requires mandatory insurance? Because the rental company's base limit covers only the minimum, and in an accident with injuries, claims easily exceed it. Your home insurance usually does not help here: a rented car abroad requires a separate clause in the policy. That is exactly what extended liability provides.
Separately, check theft and break-in protection, labeled LDW (Loss Damage Waiver). In Sardinia it is not unnecessary: rental cars sometimes get broken into at unguarded parking lots.
There is also an important legal detail. Sardinia is part of the EU, but in a dispute Italian law and local deadlines apply. If you are not familiar with them, it is better to take one extra insurance than to prove you are right in a foreign country later.
Portals differ in what is already included in the price. At Sunny Cars, full coverage and extended liability are included in the rate, but you learn the rental company's name only after payment: reviews are harder to find. At Check24 and Discover Cars you build the package yourself and immediately see which company you are renting from.
Take out insurance online when booking, not at the pickup counter. Additional policies offered when you pick up the car are usually more expensive than the same coverage online.
Tip 10: pick up the car at the airport
Most travelers fly into Olbia, Cagliari, or Alghero. These airports have the most competition among rental companies and the largest selection of cars, and competition always pushes prices down. It is easier to compare offers online before you fly.
Olbia airport
Olbia airport is small: one terminal and a large parking lot in front of it. Cars are a step away from the exit; just follow the signs toward Car Rental. You will reach the counter on foot in a couple of minutes and will not have to drag your suitcases through the city.

Cagliari is the island's largest and busiest airport. Rental counters are also within walking distance of the terminal. If you arrive late in the evening, allow time for the line: in high season it forms quickly.

Alghero is the smallest of the three. In high season Ryanair flies here direct, for example from Memmingen and Frankfurt-Hahn. There are fewer rental companies here. Among them are international Sixt and Avis and local Locauto, Autovia Alghero, Italy Car Rent.
© Gianni Careddu · CC BY-SAPhoto: Gianni Careddu, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsA small airport is a chance for a discount. Demand for cars in Alghero is lower than in Olbia, and offers here are sometimes cheaper. Before booking, compare prices in Alghero, Olbia, and Cagliari for the same dates.
All three airports share one advantage: you get the car right after landing, without a trip into the city. The only difference is size and how busy they are. Olbia is more convenient for the north of the island, Cagliari for the south, Alghero for the west and northwest.
Factor in the drive to your hotel too. If your resort is an hour's drive from the airport and your flight lands in the evening, pick up the car where you landed and do not make a detour through another city to save twenty euros. Nighttime hairpin turns on an unfamiliar road cost more than any discount.
Mark the pickup and return location on the map in advance. In Olbia, rental cars are in a separate area in front of the terminal; in Cagliari, counters are next to the arrivals hall. In an unfamiliar airport, finding the right exit eats up time, and the plane will not wait.
Tip 11: how car pickup works
To pick up the car you need your booking number, driver's license, passport or ID card, and the same card you paid with. Keep them at hand, not in a suitcase that has already gone to the baggage hold.
At the counter you will almost certainly be offered extras: extended insurance, a second driver, a higher class. If you arranged everything online, decline calmly; you already have the coverage you need.
Then you will be taken to the car. Inspect the body together with the staff member and document every chip: photos, video, and a note in the pickup report. Even with full coverage, a scratch found later becomes a point of dispute at return.
Photograph the fuel level and odometer reading. Under the "full tank at pickup" rule, the car should have a full tank, and if it does not, ask for a note in the documents. Also check that the air conditioning works.
Tip 12: safety and parking
Sardinia remains a safe destination, but unattended cars do get broken into here, and in recent years this has happened more often. That alone is no reason to skip renting, but it is a reason to remove everything valuable from the cabin.
- Park in guarded lots or on hotel grounds if you have the choice.
- At nature parking areas, do not leave the car in a far corner: there is shade, but also less attention.
- Do not leave a bag, camera, or phone in view.
- Remove everything valuable from the trunk and leave the trunk cover open so the contents are visible from outside.
The last point seems odd, but it works: cars with unknown contents get broken into more often. An empty, open trunk removes the interest.
Tip 13: returning the car
Return takes more time than it seems. Return the car with the same fuel level stated in the contract and inspect the body for fresh damage. Photos of the condition before return are your protection: without them, proving that a chip did not appear on your watch is almost impossible.
Get into the car and check everything that could have slid under the seat: phone, glasses, charger. Finding your phone at check-in is no longer an adventure, it is stress.
Ask for a return report and get it in hand or by email. Without the report you have no confirmation of the condition in which you returned the car.
Plan about an hour if you return the car at the airports of Olbia, Alghero, or Cagliari. In summer there can be a line at the lot, and the counter does not process cars according to your flight schedule.
Comparison: two weeks of rental in August from Olbia
Now let's compare the three portals using the same example.
© Dr. Thomas Liptak · CC BY-SAPhoto: Dr. Thomas Liptak, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsThe comparison conditions are identical for all three portals:
- two weeks of rental from Olbia Airport in August;
- economy class, for example a Fiat Panda or equivalent;
- full insurance with no deductible;
- extended liability;
- second driver on the contract;
- unlimited mileage;
- a rental company with good reviews.
This package covers almost all the costs that would otherwise surface at the counter. You need to compare the full package, not the first number you see in search results.
Criterion | Sunny Cars | Check24 | DiscoverCars |
|---|---|---|---|
Rental company visible before payment | No, you find out after booking | Yes | Yes |
Insurance included in price | Full and extended included | You add it yourself | You add it yourself |
Free cancellation | Yes | Yes, up to the last day | Yes |
Debit card | Usually not accepted | Limited | Some offers with no surcharge |
Reviews of the specific rental company | Hard to find | Yes | Yes |
In our August comparison, the price spread for two weeks reached several tens of euros under identical conditions. Part of that difference comes down to insurance. Where insurance is already included, the price looks higher, but you have nothing extra to pay at the counter. Where it is sold separately, the base figure works as bait, and the final price with zero deductible catches up to the competition.
There is a second reason too: agencies adjust prices to demand. The same rental company can be more expensive on one portal and cheaper on another on the same day. So a single search is not enough.
Look at reviews of the rental company at your specific airport. A good overall rating for the company helps little if you stand in line for two hours at that particular counter and the car comes with an empty tank.
The practical takeaway is simple. Compare at least three portals, bookmark them, and check the price a few days before departure.
If the price drops, rebook: a rate with free cancellation lets you do that at no loss. If not, you at least know you got the best available price rather than the first one that came up.
⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
Do you even need a car in Sardinia?
Yes, if you want to see the island rather than a single resort. Buses connect towns and a few major beaches, but public transport barely reaches remote coves, viewpoints, and villages inland. With a car you choose your own route and stop times. Without one, the trip will be noticeably narrower.
What is cheaper, renting or bringing your own car?
It all depends on the length of stay. For ten days, fly and rent a car: driving your own car will eat up two days of vacation. For trips of two weeks or more, consider the option of your own car plus a ferry: you bring more luggage and don't pay for rental every day. The crossing from Livorno to Olbia takes 7.5 to 9 hours (as of 09/2026, Ferryhopper).
Should you pick up the car in town or at the airport?
At the airport it is almost always cheaper. There are more rental companies and cars there, and competition pushes prices down. City counters often offer the same class at a higher price and with less choice. If you are flying in, pick up the car right at the terminal and return it there before departure.
Which rental companies operate in Sardinia?
International: Enterprise, Avis, Europcar, Alamo, Sixt. Italian: Noleggiare, Dynamica, B-Rent, Only Sardinia, Locauto, Moventur, Surprice, Galdieri, Italy Rent a Car. The full list for your airport is visible in an aggregator search, along with reviews. Choose a company with a good rating, not just by price.
How much does car rental in Sardinia cost?
In high season, expect the upper double-digit range per day including insurance. An economy car in midsummer costs more than the same class in spring or autumn, nearly double. In the off-season the price drops to the lower double-digit range. The longer the rental period, the lower the daily price: a weekly rate is usually cheaper than the sum of individual days. The most expensive are short weekend bookings in August.
How do you find a cheap car?
Compare at least three portals for the same dates and choose a rate with free cancellation. That way you can rebook if the price drops. Start searching two to three months before the trip and check the price again a few days before departure: good deals also appear at the last minute. Also look at April and October: in the off-season the same class costs noticeably less, and the weather for driving around the island remains comfortable.
What should you look for when booking?
The car class, reviews of the specific rental company, and the insurance terms. Terms vary between companies: some include full insurance in the price, others sell it separately, and the deductible is buried in the fine print. Also check the fuel policy and whether they accept your card.
Which car class should you choose?
For two people, an economy class like a Fiat Panda is enough. With three passengers, go for a compact class; with four, a sedan or crossover, otherwise the luggage won't fit. If you are driving on unpaved roads to remote coves, look at a class with higher ground clearance, but most beaches are accessible in a regular passenger car.
Do you need separate rental insurance?
Yes, if the rate does not include full insurance with no deductible. Also add extended third-party liability: the basic limit covers only the minimum, and claims from an accident with injuries exceed it. Buy the insurance online when booking; the same coverage costs more at the counter.
Do rental cars get broken into?
It happens, although Sardinia remains a safe destination. Cars left unattended at natural parking areas are broken into more often. Remove bags, cameras, and phones from the cabin, park in a guarded lot, and leave the luggage cover open so the contents are visible from outside.
How far in advance should you book a car?
Start two to three months before the trip, especially if you are traveling in July or August. At the same time, keep searching until the last days: rental companies release unsold cars at reduced prices, and such rates can be cheaper than winter ones. The key is to have free cancellation on the booking.
Is there a best rental company in Sardinia?
There is no single best one. Each company has its own strengths and weaknesses, and quality depends on the specific counter and season. Read reviews of the rental company at the airport where you pick up the car, and don't choose a company with poor ratings just because of a low price.

In short: what to book
For a trip around Sardinia, get an economy or compact car with air conditioning, book it in advance, with free cancellation and a full insurance package. Search through two or three portals: the difference for the same dates can be significant, and competition between aggregators works in your favor.
If you are a couple traveling for ten days: an economy class like a Fiat Panda and full insurance with no deductible. For a family of four: a sedan or crossover with extra luggage space. If you are going for two weeks or more: compare rental with the option of taking a ferry with your own car.
If you are traveling off-season, get the same class for less: in April and October the price drops to the lower double-digit range, and the routes stay the same. Don't overpay for a crossover if you are not planning on unpaved roads.
Plan one rental for the whole trip, from airport to airport. Renting a car in separate segments between resorts is almost always more expensive, and each extension at the counter comes with its own fee.
And the main rule: a rate with free cancellation. It keeps your right to rebook when the price drops and doesn't tie you to a mediocre offer months before the trip.
