Latvia

6

You have chosen Latvia and are now planning the trip in detail. You need to work out how many days to give Riga, whether to add Jūrmala and other towns, and which area to stay in. You also need to sort out the ride from the airport and the budget. This section is built around those questions.

Most of the guides are about Riga. There are itineraries for one day, for two days and a three-day winter itinerary: the old town, the market in the hangars, a view from above, the fair and concerts. Choosing an area to stay in is covered separately, in several guides with different angles: for a first trip, by budget, with hotels in each area. There is also an overview of tours in the city and beyond it, and a selection of bars in the Old Town.

Outside the capital there are fewer guides, but they cover the main destinations. For Jūrmala there is a one-day walking route through Majori, Jomas iela and Dzintari, a long list of stops from Dzintari to Ķemeri and an overview of sanatoriums with mud treatments and mineral water. A five-day itinerary links Riga, Sigulda, Cēsis and Jūrmala. A separate guide is devoted to Cape Kolka: what to see there and what is nearby.

The practical part answers the questions that come up before you buy tickets. How to get from Riga airport to the center: bus, minibus or taxi. How public transport works in Riga and around the country, what kinds of tickets exist and where the trains go. Where cards are accepted, where you need cash and how much it is customary to tip. There is a guide to prices for accommodation, food and transport, as well as texts on the seasons: when to go to Riga and where to head in the fall.

Every guide opens with a short conclusion, so the main point is visible right away. Practical blocks follow: how to get there, how much time to allow, what to buy in advance. For prices and opening hours we state the source and the date of the check. We verify figures against the official websites of carriers, museums and city services. We write about the downsides directly: if a place is overcrowded in season or the journey takes a long time, the text will say so.

The section suits people who travel independently and want to put a plan together in advance. It is useful both for a first weekend trip to Riga and for a week with outings to other towns. It will be less useful if you are looking for detailed guides to small towns and rural areas: for now the section focuses on Riga, Jūrmala and a few well-known spots. Hiking and active travel are not covered yet either.

We suggest starting with the guide to the seasons: it helps you pick a month and understand what to expect from the weather and the holidays. Then read the text on prices and set your budget. After that, choose an area and an itinerary to match the number of days. The guides on transport, the airport and payments are best read last, shortly before you fly.

"Latvia" is part of the "Europe" section, which in turn belongs to "Destinations". The country has no subsections, and all guides sit in a single list. If you are planning a trip across several countries, look at the neighboring sections on the same level, for example "Finland", "Denmark", "Germany" or "Belgium".

We update the guides: prices, timetables and fare payment rules change, and the texts are revised along with them. The date of the last check is given in every guide. Before your trip, still verify opening hours and fares on the official websites, especially around holidays. The section will grow as new guides appear. For now it holds enough to put together a trip to Riga and the coast from the first day to the last.
