MSC Meraviglia cruise ship in port

MSC Meraviglia was built at the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, and the ship entered service on June 3, 2017 (as of 09/2026, Wikipedia). The ship's godmother is actress Sophia Loren. The vessel is 315 m long, 43 m wide, and 65 m high, with a gross tonnage of 171,598 tons. The ship carries 4,488 passengers at double occupancy and up to 5,642 guests on peak sailings, with a crew of 1,536.

The ship led the Meraviglia class, and MSC Meraviglia became the first vessel in this series. It was later joined by MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, and MSC Euribia. The promenade inside the hull is covered by a long LED ceiling. The screen changes its display throughout the day, so even indoors you can watch sunsets and starry skies pass above you.

Technology helps save time. The MSC for Me app connects your smartphone to the ship's screens: through it you can book shows, find a restaurant, and track your bill. You open your cabin with a card or wristband, and you check your child into the kids' club right in the app. Parents can always see where their children are.

The ship also cares about the environment. The engines run on a diesel-electric system, and while docked the ship can connect to shore power and shut down its engines. In New York, the ship connected to shore power for the first time in October 2025 (as of 09/2026, MSC Meraviglia on Wikipedia).

The ship's geography changes by season. From April 2023, MSC Meraviglia sailed year-round from Brooklyn in New York, but it ends that program in April 2026. After that, it moves to seasonal sailings from Miami, Caribbean cruises, and summer Europe itineraries. In late 2027, the ship will head to South America for the first time (as of 09/2026, ship profile).

Entertainment

Entertainment on MSC Meraviglia keeps guests busy all day. During the day, you have access to a water park with slides, pools and hot tubs, a sports court, a jogging track, and bowling. For a quieter pace, there's a spa complex, beauty salon, and fitness center. In the evening, the main Broadway Theatre awaits with shows and concerts. The Carousel Lounge presents musical productions with acrobatics and a live orchestra.

You book show tickets through the MSC for Me app. That way you avoid standing in line at the desk and can see available slots on the screen. There's a casino, discos, and live music in the bars. There's a boutique area, a cinema, a library, and an internet center. For active guests, there are virtual game simulators and a recording studio area.

Restaurants

Meals on board are included in the cruise fare, except for alcohol. In the main dining rooms, you order from a menu, and the buffet serves food almost around the clock. The buffet hall has dedicated zones for pizza, grill, baked goods, and healthy eating. Italian cuisine is served in Panorama Restaurant, L'Olivo d'Oro, and Ristorante Italiano. There's also an American steakhouse, a sushi bar, a chocolate bar, and the Champagne Bar.

You should decide in advance where to have dinner. The main dining rooms are convenient for families, while the alternative restaurants suit a special evening, but tables there are booked separately and paid for from the menu. For children and special diets, vegetarian, kids', and kosher menus are available. Dining venues are spread throughout the ship: in the atrium, by the pools, on the upper deck, and in the panoramic-window lounge.

Gratuities and dress code

Gratuities are added to your final bill automatically. The amount depends on the sailing region, cruise length, and passenger age: for children the amount is usually half. Check current rates with MSC Cruises before purchasing or once on board. You can adjust or remove the gratuity amount at the reception desk.

The dress code depends on the evening's format. During the day, comfortable clothing and athletic shoes are fine. For dinner in the main dining room, an elegant look works well, and for the formal gala evening a cocktail dress or a suit with a tie is appropriate. If you forget something, you can buy what you need in the boutiques on board and in ports.

Kids' clubs

Kids' clubs welcome guests from toddlers to teenagers. The staff run programs in English and other languages, so at least basic English will help your child. Activities are divided into calm and active: board games, drawing, and modeling alternate with sports relays. There are dedicated movie rooms and a tech workshop for those who like to build things.

Parents are offered family excursions. MSC partners with LEGO and Chicco, so young passengers always have new sets and toys. You should sign your child up for the club in advance through the app to secure a spot in the right age group.

Cabins and decks

MSC Meraviglia has 15 passenger decks, and capacity reaches up to 5,642 guests (as of 09/2026, Wikipedia summary). For large groups, there are Family and Super Family cabins: they accommodate up to ten people. Some suites are two-level, with a living room downstairs and a bedroom upstairs.

Cabin choice affects the cruise price and the view from your window (as of 09/2026, MSC Cruises):

  • Interior cabin up to 16 m², sleeps up to four people.
  • Oceanview cabin up to 18 m², up to four people.
  • Balcony cabin up to 22 m², up to four people.
  • Balcony suite up to 27 m²: living room, bedroom, walk-in closet, and a jacuzzi on the balcony.
  • Deluxe Suite up to 28 m² with a balcony.
  • Royal Suite at 56 m²; there are only two of these suites on board.

Beyond the amenities, every cabin has a TV with an interactive menu. You can use it to check the schedule, book show tickets, and review your bill. There are also single cabins, which is convenient if you're traveling alone. The cabin category also determines your set of perks, from priority boarding to access to exclusive lounge areas.

Around Europe (British Isles)

A short Northern Europe cruise departs from the German port of Kiel. The city sits on the shore of a bay, and every year it hosts the Kieler Woche maritime festival. The ship then calls at Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. You spend a full day there: exploring the canals, Andersen's houses, and museums. The route ends in Southampton in Hampshire. It's one of the oldest ports in the UK, with traditional English architecture. Over a short sailing you get a solid sense of the countries of Northern Europe.

Northern Europe

A Northern Europe cruise introduces you to the capitals of Finland, Denmark, and Estonia. You'll visit the historic port of Kiel and see the main cities of the Baltics. Copenhagen leaves a strong impression: gingerbread houses along the canals and the bronze Little Mermaid on her rock. The city carefully preserves the legacy of Hans Christian Andersen, so kids will enjoy walking through the places tied to his characters. In Helsinki the past meets the present, and there's plenty to do, from water parks to shopping centers. Tallinn sticks with you as an open-air museum city with medieval streets. Denmark impresses with its canals and colorful facades, while Estonia surprises with how a medieval center coexists with modern cafes.

Fjords and Scandinavia

The fjords are the main reason many people choose Northern Europe. From the Baltic ports the ship calls at Tallinn and Kiel, then turns toward Norway. You'll see Hellesylt, an old Viking port, the small town of Flam, and the port of Stavanger. Norway's fjords offer pearlescent water and mountain peaks wrapped in mist. Waterfalls roar right in the middle of villages, and you'll remember the local fried fish long after you're home. The strongest excursion here is to the glaciers, and the photos turn out fantastic. In summer these latitudes stay light almost around the clock, so evening walks on deck are especially good.

Mediterranean

A Mediterranean cruise covers the most famous ports of southern Europe. You'll see Marseille in France, and Genoa and Civitavecchia in Italy, the latter being the gateway to Rome. The ship calls at Palermo in Sicily and Valletta in Malta. Here you'll find a warm sea, old cities with rich heritage, lively markets, and boutiques. Port calls are short, so it's worth booking excursions in advance to avoid losing a day. The weather is usually pleasant, and you have a full day to get to know each city. On a single sailing you see several countries at once, and every stop brings a new city.

Baltic itineraries

A separate group of itineraries is built around the Baltic and its ports. You can start your cruise from Copenhagen or Kiel and see Tallinn, Helsinki, and Kotka over a week and a half. In each city you have enough time for a sightseeing tour, museums, and local cuisine. Days at sea are also packed: pools, movies, live music, and shows. Private excursions in your preferred language are easy to book online in advance. Baltic cruises are short, so they work well even for first-time cruisers.

Canada

Canada appeals to those who want to combine nature and history. These sailings ran from New York until April 2026, so check the MSC schedule for current availability. One stop is the port of Corner Brook on the island of Newfoundland, another is Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. The scenic Canadian islands make a big impression, and Quebec City, the capital of the province of the same name, has preserved its French-speaking culture. The city's historic district is loved for its distinctive style and old architecture. The ship spends several days at sea, but the extensive onboard program keeps boredom away.

Caribbean

The Caribbean offers a mix of beach and sightseeing vacations. The ship calls at Philipsburg on St. Maarten and Fort-de-France on Martinique. Then come Bridgetown on Barbados, St. George's on Grenada, Willemstad on Curacao, and Oranjestad on Aruba. Between ports you'll find the private island of Ocean Cay. Here you can spend the whole day on white sand or head out on an excursion to waterfalls and old forts. Local cuisine and wines are also part of the route, and between islands the ship mostly sails at night.

Repositioning cruises

MSC Meraviglia's long itineraries are designed for those who want to spend several weeks at sea. The ship connects the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and North America, so these sailings are often called repositioning cruises. They're convenient for anyone who doesn't want to fly twice: the ship itself carries you between continents.

USA: East Coast

The ship operated sailings from New York along the East Coast until April 2026. Check the MSC schedule for current availability of this route. You'll visit Bar Harbor and Halifax, as well as Portland and Boston. In each city you have time for museums, waterfronts, and shopping. The scenery shifts from rugged Canadian landscapes to the warmer south. Over the course of the sailing, the entire East Coast of America unfolds before you. This route works especially well in the fall, when New England enjoys mild weather.

Transatlantic cruises

The ship makes its transatlantic crossing as part of repositioning sailings. It departs from Kiel and calls at Copenhagen, Southampton, and Belfast. Along the way you'll stop in Reykjavik, Iceland, and spend several days in the open sea. Then comes Halifax in Canada. This way you compare the ports of Europe and North America in a single trip. Days at sea are filled with entertainment, so there's no chance to get bored.

Cruises

MSC Meraviglia offers itineraries of different lengths and regions. We selected the routes guests choose most often and organized them by port. Seasonal prices depend on the date and cabin category, so it's worth checking them before booking. Dates and prices are easy to compare in the Find a cruise section.

Caribbean from Miami: Jamaica and Belize

The cruise departs from the port of Miami in Florida. The ship makes its first stop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica: this is a hub for diving and water sports, with waterfalls nearby. The ship then heads to George Town in the Cayman Islands and to Cozumel, the religious center of the Maya. Next you reach Ocean Cay, a large entertainment complex built for cruise passengers. MSC Meraviglia then calls at the island of Roatan in Honduras: the second-largest coral reef in the world lies off its shores. After that comes the old port of Belize and the beaches of Costa Maya. The sailing takes about two weeks and suits those who want to combine beaches with diving. On the long southern route, book a balcony cabin: evenings by the sea are especially pleasant.

  • Ports: Ocho Rios, George Town, Cozumel, Ocean Cay, Roatan, Belize, Costa Maya.
  • Duration: about two weeks.
  • Who it's for: divers and beach lovers.

Next come Martinique with Fort-de-France and Bridgetown in Barbados, where a baobab tree around a thousand years old grows. In St. George's, Grenada, you'll be impressed by the old French architecture and the Catholic cathedral. Willemstad in Curacao is known for its unusual museums, and Oranjestad in Aruba for its old fort. The finale is Miami, and along the way the ship stops at Ocean Cay. Choose this repositioning if you're ready for several days on the open sea.

Around the Caribbean Sea from Miami

The sailing starts and ends in Miami. The first port is Costa Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula. The coastline stretches for almost a hundred and sixty kilometers, and behind the forests hide fishing villages, beaches, and ancient Maya temples. Next comes Belize, a city founded in the seventeenth century, with a swing bridge, a colonial-style town hall, and an old Anglican church. On Roatan, even a short stay is memorable: clear water, rich underwater life, and the best diving in the region. Before returning, the ship calls at Ocean Cay with its entertainment options. This cruise takes about a week and works well for a first introduction to the Caribbean. Costa Maya is best explored either on the beach or on an excursion to the Maya pyramids.

  • Ports: Miami, Costa Maya, Belize, Roatan, Ocean Cay.
  • Duration: about a week.
  • Who it's for: a first Caribbean cruise.

The cruise sails from Miami to Miami, and in a week you get to see several stops. You'll visit Roatan in Honduras, Belize, Costa Maya, and Ocean Cay. Roatan is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the region, and most guests choose the beach, although you can take a taxi and go explore the surroundings. Belize sits on the warm Caribbean coast, and here you'll find mangrove forests, exotic birds, and the old St. John's Cathedral. The port of Costa Maya was built specifically for cruise ships: there are no large cities nearby, but there are excellent beaches and Maya ruins. The finale takes place at Ocean Cay. Roatan is the place most often called the best diving spot in the region.

  • Ports: Miami, Roatan, Belize, Costa Maya, Ocean Cay.
  • Duration: about a week.
  • Who it's for: those who want a short beach cruise.

Along the way the ship calls at Tallinn, Kiel, and Copenhagen, as well as Hellesylt, Flam, and Stavanger in Norway, plus Helsinki. Tallinn charms with its medieval streets, Town Hall Square, and the Dome Church. In Kiel, the Church of St. Nicholas, built in the thirteenth century, and a World War II submarine are worth seeing. The Norwegian towns attract with their architecture, and nearby lie fjords, mountains, and waterfalls. In Helsinki in summer, you'll appreciate the local beaches. In summer there's white night light here, so you have more time for walks.

From Molde you get a view of the surrounding fjords, so leave time for a viewpoint.

In Norway, Alesund stands out, a city in Art Nouveau style, and a walk through old Tallinn is also a pleasure. The cruise takes more than two weeks, so there's plenty of time for the cities. What's included in the price

  • Accommodation in a cabin of your chosen category.
  • 24-hour dining in the main restaurants and buffet.
  • Port fees and taxes.
  • Entertainment programs during the cruise.
  • Attractions: carousel and water slides.
  • Sports: pools, hot tubs, fitness center, sports court, and mini golf.
  • Kids' clubs.

Cabins in the Bella, Fantastica, Aurea, Wellness, and Yacht Club categories come with additional perks. They cover dining, entertainment, and priority boarding without waiting in line. The cruise price is locked in upfront, so you have a good idea of what your vacation will cost.

What costs extra

The range of included services is broad, but you'll still need money on board. The following are paid separately:

  • Gratuities, which are added to your final bill.
  • Phone, internet, casino, and video games.
  • Drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
  • Table reservations at alternative restaurants.
  • Premium shows in the Carousel Lounge.

Some services are paid before the cruise. These include flights, taxis, visas, medical insurance, trip cancellation insurance, and excursions. It's better to budget for some of these costs before the trip so you don't have to track every small expense on board.

Traveler reviews

In reviews, MSC Meraviglia guests most often praise the comfort and cleanliness of the ship. They specifically mention the attentive staff and the wide variety of food: portions are generous, and dietary and children's menu requests are accommodated. Passengers also enjoy the entertainment program, where one event follows another. Shows, concerts, movies, dancing, and workshops keep you busy even on sea days.

Families with children write that it's easy to relax on board. Kids' clubs, a separate menu, movie theaters, and the water park make the cruise convenient for the whole family, and the staff is always ready to help. When arriving in port, coordinators assist travelers: they point out where transport stops are and what's worth seeing. The most common complaint is boarding lines. Some guests ask for an individual nanny service. Overall, the ship works well for both a first cruise and a family vacation.

What to pack

The region and time of year determine what goes in your suitcase. In Europe, the best time for a cruise is from May through September. The exception is island itineraries: in the second half of summer, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas can fall within hurricane season. Either way, you'll need clothes for excursions, comfortable shoes, and an umbrella.

For beach stops, pack a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a light cover-up. In cooler regions, a windbreaker and sweater will come in handy: it's always windy on deck. Keep your documents and money close at hand, you can't do without them. If you take medication, bring a supply with you and don't rely on luck. Also pack a camera, phone, laptop or tablet, and chargers for them. There are boutiques on board, so you can buy any small items you forget. Double-check your luggage before leaving home.
