Taxi in Crete: prices from Heraklion and Chania airports in 2026
A taxi from Heraklion airport to the city center costs about 20-25 € for a 10-15 minute ride. Near the terminal, this price is the most reasonable option: the city bus will cost 1.30 € if you buy a ticket in advance, and a fixed-rate transfer from an operator's price list starts at 25 € (as of 09/2026, Crete taxi operator price list).
Crete stretches for almost 260 km, so how you get around determines your vacation budget. From Heraklion to the west of the island takes more than two hours, and a taxi on this route costs as much as renting a car for several days.
Below are approximate rates from both airports, travel times, and options that save you money.

How taxi rates work on Crete
💡 In short:
- Official cars in Heraklion and Chania run on the meter, but on long routes drivers usually quote a flat price.
- A reference point from local operators' price lists: about 1 € per kilometer, the shortest ride from Heraklion airport, to Knossos, costs about 12 €.
- At night, a ride costs noticeably more than during the day: the driver or operator gives you the exact amount before you set off.
- The KTEL bus costs several times less, but takes longer and doesn't stop in small villages.
- Prices and travel times: 09/2026, verified on the Crete taxi operator website.
Meter or fixed price. Formally, the ride is calculated by the taximeter, but on routes longer than 40 km the driver usually quotes the price in advance. Local operators' price lists give a clear reference point: about 1 € per kilometer (as of 09/2026, Crete Taxi rate grid). From Heraklion airport to Rethymno that's 80 km and 92 €, to Chania 147 km and 164 €.
Agree before you set off. Some cars on the island drive without the meter running, and on a long route the price is calculated by distance. Ask the price before the car starts moving: the tables below are exactly for that conversation. If the driver quotes a price noticeably above the reference point, calmly wait for the next car at the stand.
What an official taxi looks like. At Heraklion airport, these are white cars with a blue stripe (as of 09/2026, terminal overview from Crete Direct). Uber and Bolt do not operate on the island, so at the terminal exit you either take a car from the official stand or get into a transfer booked in advance (as of 09/2026, breakdown of taxis at HER airport).
Night surcharge. In Greece, the night rate applies from midnight to five in the morning, and the ride costs more than during the day; exactly how much depends on the operator and route. Confirm the amount before getting in and plan a late-night arrival in advance so you don't have to scramble for cash on the spot.
What affects travel time. The E75 highway connects Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania, and in summer it gets congested. On August 15, the day of the Assumption, traffic leaving Heraklion is at a standstill for hours, so on that day feel free to multiply the time in the table by one and a half. In winter, the same routes take even less time than listed.
Taxi from Heraklion airport: prices and travel times
Nikos Kazantzakis Airport (HER) is 5 km from the city center and handles more than 9 million passengers per season (as of 09/2026, HER airport overview 2026). It's convenient for the eastern and central parts of the island: Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Hersonissos, and Malia are closer to here than to Chania.

The practical rule for this airport: short trips up to 25 km are worth taking a taxi, while longer trips to the east are cheaper to cover with a fixed-price transfer. In July and August there can be a line of ten cars at the stand, and the wait eats into the savings. If you are flying to Malia or Hersonissos, the trip takes half an hour and costs less than a day's car rental.
Taxi from Chania Airport: prices and travel times
Ioannis Daskalogiannis Airport (CHQ) serves the western part of the island. The old town of Chania is about 15 km and 20 minutes away, Rethymno is 70 km, and Elafonisi is 92 km (as of 09/2026, Chania Airport taxi price list). This is the arrival point for travelers heading to Balos, the Samaria Gorge, and the beaches of the west coast.

Short routes are the best value from this airport: Platanias, Agia Marina, and Kalyves cost under 45 €. A trip to the east of the island, to Hersonissos or Agios Nikolaos, runs over 170 €, and at that point it is worth comparing a taxi with a rental car.
Online booking: fixed price and meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall
Some taxi companies on Crete accept advance bookings through their websites. You provide the date, arrival time, flight number, and hotel, and after confirmation you get a fixed price and the driver's name. The driver waits for you in the arrivals hall with a sign, and there is no extra charge for waiting.
What pre-booking gets you. The price does not change due to traffic or a night surcharge, and payment is made either online or in the car. For families with children, it is also a way to reserve a child seat in advance instead of hoping one is available at the taxi stand. Book a few days ahead: in July and August, cars for morning flights get taken quickly.
Who does not need it. If you arrive during the day and have a short ride to a hotel in Heraklion, a taxi from the stand will cost less. Pre-booking usually wins on long routes (Rethymno, Hersonissos, Chania) and on night flights.

Cheaper than a taxi: KTEL buses and car rental
Bus in Heraklion. City line 1 runs from the terminal to Eleftherias Square in the center. A ticket costs 1.30 € when bought in advance and 2.30 € from the driver, the ride takes 20-30 minutes, and buses run every 20-30 minutes from 06:00 to 23:00 (as of 09/2026, Heraklion city bus fares). It is cheaper to buy a ticket at a kiosk or machine before boarding. The option is inconvenient with a heavy suitcase, but five kilometers of travel costs you ten times less than a taxi.
Bus in Chania. KTEL buses also run from Chania Airport to the city; check the schedule and fares on the carrier's website: official KTEL Chania-Rethymno website. You buy a ticket from the driver, buses run frequently in season, but evening service ends before midnight.
Intercity routes. KTEL buses connect Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania almost every hour in season, so you can cross the island without a car. For schedules in the eastern part (Agios Nikolaos, Sitia, Ierapetra), see the KTEL Heraklion website. From the airport to the bus station, you can take the same city bus or a taxi for 25-30 €.
Car rental. A car pays off if you are staying longer than two or three days: without one, it is hard to reach the south coast, the gorges, and remote beaches. Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, and Budget operate in the Heraklion arrivals hall, and local rental companies are usually 20-35% cheaper than international chains (as of 09/2026, Heraklion Airport overview by Crete Direct). In July and August, a small automatic car costs 40-70 € per day; in May and October, 20-35 €. Book 4-6 weeks before your trip: on-site prices in summer are 30-50% higher.
A combined option. Many people take a taxi for the first two days and rent a car later, once they have already figured out the hotel and beaches. This way you avoid paying for hotel parking and dealing with parking in central Chania, where there is almost no space in the old town.
⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Heraklion Airport to the center?
Roughly 20-25 € for a 10-15 minute ride (as of 09/2026, Crete taxi operator price list). To nearby villages like Gouves or Karteros, you will pay 25-35 €. A higher rate applies at night, and on August 15 traffic jams leaving the city add to the total.
Can you use Uber or Bolt in Crete?
Uber does not serve the island, so you take a ride from the official stand at the terminal or book in advance with a taxi operator (as of 09/2026, why Uber does not work on the island). Always agree on the price before you start: this way you avoid arguing about the fare on the spot.
What is the cheapest way to get from Chania Airport to the old town?
The KTEL bus costs a few euros and takes about half an hour, while a taxi costs around 30 € for 15 km (as of 09/2026, Chania Airport fares for 2026). You buy the ticket from the driver, and check the schedule on the KTEL Chania-Rethymno website. With two suitcases and a late arrival, the difference favors a taxi.
Do you need to book a transfer in advance?
In July and August, yes, especially for morning and evening flights. Booking in advance locks in the price, and the driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a sign, so a flight delay does not turn into a new total. On long routes, booking in advance is often cheaper than the meter.
What is better for a week: a taxi or a rental car?
If you are staying at one hotel and only go into town, a taxi and the bus are enough. For the south coast, Samaria Gorge, and Balos Lagoon you need a car: renting a small car in the off-season starts at around 20 € per day, and the exact rate depends on the season, class, and rental company. A trip from Chania Airport to Elafonisi and back costs about 200 €. That is like 3-5 days of rental in summer.
In short: what to book
A taxi in Crete remains the fastest way to get from the airport to your hotel, and the KTEL bus the cheapest. What to choose for your trip:
- If you are going to Karteros, Gouves, or Amoudara: a short ride, and a metered car from the stand will be cheaper than any pre-booking.
- If you are flying to Chania and then heading west: compare a taxi with a rental car, the difference becomes noticeable already on the second trip.
- If you have an early arrival in July or August: book a transfer with a fixed price, otherwise you risk looking for a car in the queue.
